Well...we're skating dangerously close to getting this Thread Locked, but...

What proof is there that it does?

It doesn't even contain all the Theological material from the time that should be in it. Things were discarded because they didn't fit with what those in charge wanted The Bible to say and facts were changed by humans (ex: Constantine completely changed the role of the Romans in Jesus' execution to make them look faultless)
As for the Link...I'm sure that if I really felt like contaminating my Search History, I could find dozens of Websites that present Biblical references that support the idea that Racism, Sexism, Nationalism, Anti-Semitism, Homophobia, and a million other distasteful Ideaologies are all "God's Will"...
The power of the Bible is Allegorical...all the worth is stolen from it when it is taken as purely factual.
And; by the way, there are dozens of other Religions and Philosophies that had many aspects of Cosmology and Physics pretty well nailed thousands of years before Jesus was born.

I'm not really a believer. More agnostic than anything. But the bible has been translated and rewritten so many times in so many languages by so many people. There's bound to be misinterpritations, and even complete falsities. I mean it was originally written in old hebrew. Old Hebrew is incredibly hard to decipher, because each letter has multiple meanings.

you can blame the puritans for coming up with the rapture...

Err actully all religions have end of world events. In fact acording to the Hindu's it already has. 5 times. Ah well I think one problem with "End of the World" settings is the fact, alot of people picture just total destruction. I think of it more as an ending to the previous status qou via suffering and hardships, etc. And such an event isn't so unlikely, and has happend on a smaller scale pratically forever. On a large scale or some of the Stuff you see on TV, Doubtful. Well short of a giant Sapce Rock giving us the Glasgow kiss.  Not enough Nukes in the World For a Fallout or Water World situation, though in the event of a global exchange I would avoid major Cities for at least 5 years.  Most bombs are now designed for an air burst effect, or deep penitration to limit fallout and a shorter radioactivity life after being used.

rapture isn't really an "end of the world" scenario nor is it accepted throughout all of christianity

the current view of rapture started with the puritans and mostly exists with protestant denominations of christianity

there have been predictions of rapture for hundreds of years since the idea first came into being (with some theologians misinterpreting religious texts to support the theory), i remember hearing about a large group of farmers who were duped into selling all of their farms and belongings thinking the rapture was going to happen in the late 1800's

over 100 years later and people still think it's going to happen every and any day of every and any year

Ahh I was running with End of the World type dealings. Rapture and it are used interchangeablely here. Ah well if it happens or not I wouldn't want to be a cop working for missing persons.

I'm so tired of this. Everyone needs to wake up, all religions are a SCAM. I hate to break it to anybody that's hardcore, but its true, every piece of literature including the bible and koran is all propoganda.

Take a look at life before the bible, people were scavengers and barbarians, then the bible came along to control people and to tell them how to act or else. No everybody has this goody too shoes attitude because of it. Its all a way meant to control people's emotions and thoughts, much like the U.S. government, they don't want you to know anything.

This rapture won't occur like every other apocalypse prediction, but 2012 may occur, I think. Every religion has that specific date noted, the world may not end, but some major change will occur. Aliens, technology outbreak, I don't know, but something is bound to happen that day.

Let's not get back into 2012, you know their are so many doomsday apocalypses one of them is bound to get it right just by the sheer amount of them.

Can I come to your lynching?

And guys if it happens two things.

1 unless I'm dead in the world wide earth quake or w/e in the other ones I fully intend on logging on here and going LULZ TOLD YOU SO!

and

2 You all are welcomed among me and my assorted collection of weaponary. You just must do as I command as I command >>  Don't worry I'm not into any sick or twisted fetishes. Minus I may want a statue of me built that can turn around Bartertown and cast a knowingly Glare and shout over a speaker "I KNOW YOUR SINS I SEEN WHAT YOU DID!" at random momments. Mainly to keep people in line, also if possible I wish for the arms to be moved or even my brain to be placed inside of its mechanical frame so thus if I make an absurd claim of watching you all from the grave, or to barbarian raiders that our town is protected by a giant death machine, then I won't come across as a liar. Pluis if not me who else will protect you from Godzilla who will surely rise from the depths forty stories high?

Hehe, even though this thread should probably be locked, I must say it's become quite comic.

I'm sure that if you looked hard enough, you could attribute at least one person to thinking the world was going to end on any given day in the next say 100 years.

People believe what they need to believe on a personal level. There's nothing more to it than that.

Wait until after 2012. Then we'll need a new 'Y2K bug' or 'End of Mayan Calendar' that can be locked down to a period of a month or so in a future year...

You start by saying that all religions are nothing but a scam used to control people and that this rapture prediction won't come true but than go onto say that the world may end in 2012 because 'every religion has that date noted' (which is incorrect)

wat?

This is what I am going to do. I am going to go to the store, before work, and buy a few dozen boxes of donuts for my co-workers. AND if any of my female coworkers nag, I am going to remind them, "The worlds going to end, why not?" What the heck. Have a little fun. :D

I believe the world will end one day due to God's judgement. It's certain and if you're atheist, you should believe that the world will end also, Suns do die but I think this civilization will be dead before then because of the reason I stated.

I'm just quoting the end here because the rest of the Post is just as ridiculous...
I'm an Agnostic, not an Atheist because I simply don't have the hubris to believe I "know" one way or the other and I certainly don't believe some Book written by other Humans could even begin to capture the intentions or even the smallest part of the idea of a "God"

Ermmm. Science has proven suns die. One way or the other. This world is ending. If the sun expands, we get burnt. If the sun shrinks and turns into a white dwarf, we freeze to death.

Yes. The Bible is written by humans. No one said otherwise but how can you say that it doesn't contain the words of God?

The Bible certainly knew about a round floating earth and expanding universe thousands of years before science. Job 26:7 and Isaiah 40:22

Think of it what you will. I doubt you will convert. I'm not here to argue, I'm just posting support for my claim.

I'm starting to really hate the bible and it's vast number of passages that you can interpret fifty billion ways.

You know a certain scientist tried to explain that we revovled around the sun and not the other way around and the Church condemned him for it.

Forget religions - they are simply political machines as a easy way to make money/control.

"The supreme arrogance of religious thinking: that a carbon-based bag of
mostly water on a speck of iron-silicate dust around a boring dwarf
star in a minor galaxy in an underpopulated local group of galaxies in
an unfashionable suburb of a supercluster would look up at the sky and
declare, 'It was all made so that I could exist!'"- Peter Walker

Oh and one more thing. lol the Bible cannot contain the word of God. it was written by humans who are prone to sin and have prejudices as well as are KNOWN to interpert things a certain way. For example, if God said to these prophets or what-ever and said, 'all men are made equal'. they would say to themsevles, "well that simply must mean all men and not woman" and then further say, "He must have also meant just white men too." It's NOT the word of GOD. The entire idea of just stupid and childish I'm sorry but it is.

It's such a joke that anyone would believe a 'perfect being' created man (not perfect) then blames him for it only to tell man 'here are the rules/commandments - if you follow them you will enter heaven' yet these rules are impossible to keep.

I'm willing to bet that EVERY religion began almost the same way that the mormon's began. It's just sad.

Lets not forget how many times the bible has been 're-written' over the years to go along with the changes of ideals/usage of words.

On Topic - Uhh these 'end of the world' predictions make me laugh. How is it a good thing if it is the end of the world and why would you want to predict it? it just means our life is over?

Notice how none of the atheists are really coming up with 'end of the world' dates. I wonder why that is? if the world ends, it's not going to because religion says so, it's going to be due to some natural event. Like the Sun dying etc etc etc.

The sad thing is, I'm willing to bet WHEN the world DOES come to an end (and humans are still around - as well as religions), the religious people will go, 'oh see my religion said it would come!!!' <_<

Also - it just goes to show how gulible the world really is.
