People confusing canon with default again. Ugh...
When that "default" is also who appears in trailers, yes it is seen as canonical by many. Otherwise they'd put a helmet on him/her or not give any real look at their face.
Everyone has their own opinions. To myself and many, male Shepard is the canon Shepard.

No. Canon means it's the same for everyone. Bioware devs have also said there is no canon for ME. Nice try.Emelligos wrote...

'Default Shepard' as in BW's canon yes, but the player makes up their own 'canon' not just when they create a custom Shepard but when they decide on Paragon/Renegade and any other choices they make thorughout the games.

I know what you're saying, but just because it is seen as canonical does not make it so. It's been said so many times that there is no such thing as a canon version of Shepard. There is only a default Shepard, who is a male Soldier named John Shepard with Mark Vanderloo's face. But he isn't "canon".Emelligos wrote...

I tend to look at the character that appears in trailers as who that character really is. Also, if there were ever a mass effect movie you can bet it would have the default male Shepard.

The problem I can see is that, if they do this, it will generate confusion among people who are not already familiar with the series. Sheploo is the poster boy, and everyone recognizes him. If they wanted to use Femshep in advertising, they should've started doing that with ME1.

If you had your eyes closed and were told to picture Shepard, I'm certain at least 75% of us would picture John.

I don't understand this argument, but I see it all the time.jamesp81 wrote...

Who are these people following the game and its story closely enough to be 'confused' by an alternate Shepard while still not being familiar enough with the game to know you can pick Shepard's gender? The only people who might be 'confused' would be people who have considered picking up the games and then decided against buying. If they haven't picked up the first two with Sheploo on the cover why would alternate advertising with FemShep turn them off of it?
They already haven't played it, so either they're looking for a reason to (in which the hot badass chick in the armor may be a new selling point), or they don't care enough about the guy on the advertising for it to sway them, in which case a FemShep variant wouldn't mean much to them.
This argument makes it sound like every person who hasn't played is teetering on a dangerous precipice and putting a chick in some of the advertising might just push them right off and they'll never want to play it again.
