Gnoll Stronghold

General: We returned to the Gnoll Stronghold to ‘mop up’ as we move south to north in the Faerun. Having been there weeks ago to rescue Dynahier the remaining Gnoll population in the Stronghold was only a ‘skeleton crew’ of stragglers who’d probably been out when we raided previously.  There was no challenge to our efforts there.

We found some paths below the southern wall that led to various caves that were inhabited by Xvarts and cleaned them out also.

We also followed a path that led north of the stronghold wall and destroyed a handful of Gnolls out there.

Key Event: While nothing really measures up I’ll say that Finding the Tome of Leadership and Influence after killing a few Xvarts in one of the caves would be the most significant event of this adventure.

Treasure of Note: (Legend: S=Sold; U=Party Use; St = Me; Mi=Minsc; Kh=Khalid, etc; Sb = Spellbook). Tome of Leadership and Influence (St); Scrolls (Magic Missile (Im), Lorlach’s Minor Drain (S); Miscellaneous gems (S) and gold.

Leader Notes: My mindset has changed.  Originally we began this 'South to North' adventure in order to let things ‘cool off’ in Baldur’s Gate and to train together as a party toward our ultimate goal of destroying Sarevok.  While the latter remains a priority I suddenly feel that I’ve been led here by the guiding spirit of my God to rid the Faerun of evil and decay to the utmost of my ability.  I embrace this opportunity to serve my God and the cause of righteousness.

Good job on clearing out the caves in the Gnoll Stronghold!

Update on Soren! Also, I got a new picture for him. Tis the guy elven guy that I have as profile picture, except with the Warden Commander's Armor I think. His name is Soren as well. Also, I'm just going to summarize this instead of writing a story about it.

Soren found Brage, answered his riddle, and sent him to the temple of helm to be redeemed.
Image IPB
Image IPB

Then, Soren saved a man named Samuel, however, Soren was very disappointed when he heard that he abandoned the Flaming Fist for a woman.
Image IPB

Soren then went to the Firewine Bridge, where this Paladin told him that he killed his brother because he was jealous, and that he was seeking some sort of redemption. Soren wanted to help, but the paladin told him not to.
Image IPB

Lastly, Soren led his group to Gullykin, and said that they would help clear out the Kobold Infestation of the Firewine Bridge.

Soren - Elf Paladin - 4
Imoen - Adventurer/Mage - 3/2
Jaheira - Fighter/Totemic Druid - 3/3
Khalid - Fighter/Mage - 3/2
Dynaheir - Diviner - 3
Minsc - Berserker - 4

Soren is making tracks quickly. I'm lucky to clear an area a day.

Plus, I'm still dealing with the Elf Paladin thing. LOL

My PC misses seeing Kalyinara on the message boards with him.

Where's Belgarath? PicklePiperPepper? Corey with his wisdom and game knowledge?

I know, and I've been trying to take my time with Soren since I have like a mega-mod thing going on, and I hope I don't run into a crap load of bugs or something.

Woot! Elf Paladins! I love the Return to Trademeet Kitpack. Now, I could have used a component from ToBEx to do it, but alas I didn't want to.

Your PC will see Kalyinara again, if I ever decided to do re-do runs of old characters.

No idea where Belgarath is, and I'm still waiting for him to say something about the IWD/IWDII Minimal Reload Challenge thing, and his thoughts on where to post it. Piper was on the BG2 Minimal Reload Challenge like a couple of weeks ago, but stopped posting there, so I'm going to guess Real life commitments, and same with Belgarath. Corey is just in the No-reload challenge I do believe.

I agree, they should come back!

I'm still here CKT. I didn't see you ask a question, is why you haven't see me post anything in this thread for a while. I've been posting in the no-reload threads for quite a while, have you not seen them?

An update for Soren!

Soren led his group through the Firewine Ruins, and found the reason for the kobolds. It was not the ogre mage as Soren thought when they came across it. It was a Halfling. Which that was weird for Soren, considering that Kobolds, and Halflings hate eachother. Soren spoke to the first halfling he talked to when he entered Gullykin, and got a ring for a reward.

Image IPB

Soren led his group to a nearby area, and saved a man and his cow from Xvarts. (A/N: Oddly enough the cow wanted to attack Khalid for some strange reason. Haha.)
Image IPB

Soren found one of the smaller folk out in the same area. She wanted Soren to deal with an ogre problem to the South. Which Soren did, and then he got his reward from the weird lady.
Image IPB
Image IPB

While in the same area, Soren got attacked by two sets of bandits. Soren killed both sets of Bandits, so then nobody would have to die to them if anyone went near them.

Lastly, Soren led his group to the carnival for a camp out.

Soren - Elf Paladin - 4

Khalid - Fighter/Mage - 3/3

Bear River

General
: Following our mop up action at the Gnoll Stronghold (GS), we rested and reconstituted in Nashkel before moving north of the GS to the Bear River Area (BRA). There we encountered in various battles, five Ogres; about 10 Hobgoblin-Orecai armed with poison tipped Bows and arrows; probably 30 Gibberling’s; a huge bear and a pack of wild dogs.

Our first run-in was with a couple of Ogres. Before we got going good, Imoen cast a Sleep Spell from a Scroll and they dropped like flies.  We cut ‘em to pieces before they could come to and that was that. We all learned a valuable lesson.  Dynahier had regarded the Sleep Spell as ‘Cheap Beer’ prior to this event but now readily admits she was wrong – a rare thing indeed. We later found another Scroll of the same and Imoen wrote it to her Spellbook and memorized it when we returned to Nashkel.

Later, Laurel, a Paladin, I think, asked for aid in killing a pack of Gibberling’s which we were glad to provide. We ended up sending about 25 of them to Gibberling Hell.

Our comic relief this day was coming on an Ogre/Bard who was barbecuing something. He asked us to wait to fight him until he was ‘fat and happy.’  We irritated him one time too many and he offered to make us his ‘pudding desert.’ It didn’t work out that way for him.

From there we found ourselves in a tough fight when Khalid spied an ogre and four Orecai on a bridge leading over Bear River. It turned out there was a second Ogre.  The Orecai had those nasty poison tipped arrows armed in their bows. Once Khalid informed us of what he’d seen we allowed Dynahier to start the party with a Fireball dead in the middle of them which she applied masterfully.  This weakened them and we moved in with Minsc and me falling on the first Ogre, dismissing him and then picking out the second for destruction.  The Orecai switched to their swords when we got ‘close-in’ and they became easy prey at that point.

Later we came upon a foppish fellow in the wild who was screaming about a bear chasing him. We’d already killed that bear when we’d been on the far side of the bridge but I guess he didn’t know it yet. The fellow rewarded us with a nice pair of Boots of the North.

Key Event: On the eastern side of the river I allowed the party to scatter and it almost turned into a gigantic mistake.  Khalid had moved far ahead scouting and was on the eastern edge of the BRA.  I decided to allow the party to catch up as opposed to awaiting him to return and give us a report which is our Standing Operating Procedure.  Somehow I allowed Minsc and Jaheira to wander southeast directly toward Khalid’s position while Dynahier, Imoen and I headed east around a large hill, intent on then heading due south to link up with Khalid.

Minsc fell into the hands of a Bandit and five Orecai in hiding who attacked. Minsc was in a tough toe to toe battle with the Bandit Leader and was bleeding heavily. It didn’t help that he had already been nicked up in previous engagements in the hours beforehand and was being pelted witharrows at the same time. He’d hit the Bandit Leader a number of times but the guy was still swinging.  Jaheira was the only member of the party close enough to assist and was providing spell and ranged support as best she could but it was not significantly affecting the battle enough to aid Minsc.

I arrived in time to order Minsc to the rear out of arrow range and, even then he took another as he conducted the retrograde.  One more and we’d have been visiting the priest of Helm in Nashkel – or worse.

By the time Minsc had retired and I got to the Bandit leader, he was weakened and I took him out quickly before closing on the Orecai who quickly abandoned their bows for swords – bad idea. Dynahier and Khalid had also closed on the battle and were providing spell and ranged support as I slashed through the Orecai. We finally finished them but it was not easy.

Treasure of Note: (Legend: S=Sold; U=Party Use; St = Me; Mi=Minsc; Kh=Khalid, etc; Sb = Spellbook). Long Sword +1 (St); Scroll (Dispel Magic) (Im); Boots of the North (Kh); ~ 150 GP (U)

Leader Notes: Once again, the issue here was Party Discipline and the fault was squarely my own.  After three previous forays which yielded nothing more significant than ‘fly-swatting’, I guess I caught a case of ‘overconfidence’ which could have ended sadly – very sadly.

@Saphire: What is an Adventurer?

@Corey:  I have so little time I normally hit this board every day, and if I have a burning question like I did Saturday I'll drop it on the General Discussion forum.  If I have more time I usually go over and read the posts on the BGII Minimal Reload but I usually only get there once-twice a week.  Plus my wife and I were on vacation for a week, then my son and I were hanging for another so I've been away.  I should be 'back in the saddle' now for the foreseeable future.

I appreciate your insight.  If you have any time, please see the post I added on BG Gen Disc ref: two questions: 1) Warhorses/Barding and, 2) Helmet animations.

@Saphire: What is an Adventurer?

I think I answered this question in the BG2 minimal reload challenge thread so heres the stats for it. Heh.

ADVENTURER: The adventurer is a jack-of-all-trades, not so much a thief as a character who takes advantage of general thiefly skills on adventures. An Adventurer is preferred by many adventuring parties, because he is much less likely than other thieves to betray or steal from his own companions. The successful Adventurer knows the value of trust and cooperation, while many a "street thief" has been raised on duplicity and (sometimes literal) backstabbing.

Advantages:
- +5% to Open Locks and Find/Remove Traps every other level

Disadvantages:
- No backstab multiplier

So if you read the kit, I do believe its a thief with like the basic understanding of thief skills.

Ah, that explains it. I never go to the general discussions forum, only the spoilers forums since thats where the no-reload threads are.

Also, looks like your questions have been answered.

In case anyone is wondering, I thought I'd better make a courtesy post. My summer vacation has ended, and I am back to teaching and dealing with beginning-of-the-year real life stress.

In my now limited spare time, I needed something different after playing BG all summer, so I have taken to trying some Oblivion and Two Worlds runs for the time being.

I'll cycle through all my favorite games and be back around eventually. I may pick my diviner game back up at that time if the forum is still busy, but for now, I'm putting the run I started here on the backburner.

Good luck to all, and, as I've said before, you guys made Summer Break 2011 very enjoyable and memorable for me.

Thanks for the update, Belgarath. I might try Oblivion one of these days myself, but my current run in Oblivion is "stopped cold" at the city you have to rescue, forget the name of it. I beat the oblivion gate that was blocking access to the city, but rescuing the city I fell short. They give this quest to you rather early, if you follow the main story line right away.

While I don't mind a single player RPG if it's done right, but the extreme implausibility of Oblivion (you vs. an entire army - and not just an army but an army that is "beating" the existing army defending your land) takes the immersion away from me.

Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age both get bonus points in my book for their party format.

Ahh, well that explains that mystery then. Heh. Hope you have fun teaching, and sorry about the stress, and/or future stress.

I've played Oblivion, and I didn't like it much. Only real things that I liked about it was Patrick Steward's voice, and Sean Bean's voice, but otherwise I really don't like it much.

Hope you come back to BG, BG2, IWD, and IWD2 soon. Strange thing is I absolutely love IWD, and I'm kind of iffy about IWD2.

Thanks for the good luck wishes, and you're welcome! Hope to see you back on BG soon, and to read more of the stories.

On a minimal reload challenge note: I think I may do Ulcaster tomorrow, or go to Beregost. Hopefully, I will type out the story instead of a summary.

Xvart Village

General
: We continue to use Nashkel as our base of operations while adventuring in Amn.  As we move north toward Baldur’s Gate we’ll shift first to Beregost and finally to the FAI.  Eventually I want us to move further north to Ulgoth’s Beard and investigate that mysterious place that I’ve only read about till now.

After ‘taking a knee’ at the Nashkel Inn following our challenging foray into the Bear River Area we headed west to cleanse the Xvart Village and surroundings.

We used a different tactic here in which Khalid quaffed a Potion of Invisibility as opposed to Hiding in Shadow. This enabled him to use his Detecting Traps ability simultaneously. Before Imoen dual-classed we used them in tandem to cover both abilities.

We came across a salesman offering us some potions but we were wary of his intentions and declined.

Not much here really and we quickly moved on to the event I will describe below.

Key Event: Khalid found the Xvart Village and, being invisible, scouted the area entirely before we moved on them.  Once he returned and reported their positions we moved in from the south.

Our first blow was a fireball that Dynahier dropped right on their campfire.  That killed eight, maybe ten of them.

Then the main body moved in, staying together, and moved throughout the camp killing the stragglers.

At one point one of them accused us of killing them unprovoked and was able to enlist the aid of a huge cave bear.  Like him, she soon lay dead.

After the battle we found a treasure cave that contained another cave bear which we made quick work of before raiding the treasure that was under some logs.

Treasure of Note: (Legend: S=Sold; U=Party Use; St = Me; Mi=Minsc; Kh=Khalid, etc; Sb = Spellbook). Bracers of defense - AC8 (S); Potions (Healing x 2 (U), Fire Resistance (U); Master Thievery (Kh);

Leader Notes: Once again this area yielded little challenge. I cannot allow us to lapse in our Party Discipline. Bear River bore that out clearly.

Current Disposition: Resting at the Nashkel Inn.

Archaeological Site

General
: It was going kinda slow when Khalid came upon a woman named Laryssa who pleaded for us to get away for our own safety but her words were not clear. Once we determined it was Brage she was speaking of we knew we needed to be careful. Brage approached us and through his obvious gut wrenching pain asked a riddle of us that he intimated might free him from whatever had seized him. We answered correctly and immediately took him to Nalin at the Temple of Helm in Nashkel.  Truly it was a bittersweet ending to a tragic tale of loss.

Later we came close to taking a loss of our own.  As we were wrapping up our foray to the area around the archaeological site we, once again, were stretched out too far and Imoen stumbled on a Hobgoblin (Orecai) with a band of Kobolds.  She took several arrow hits before any of us could respond.  I ordered her back out of arrow range as the main body of the group descended on the enemy.  She came very close to getting bunched up as we arrived and may well have ‘gone under’ with one more arrow hit.  Once on the scene, however, we easily handled the Kobolds and their Orecai leader, Ba’ruk.

We also encountered a few Gnolls but nothing much else.

Key Event: We found the actual archaeological site and met an honorable, man named Charleston who was working with his crew excavating an ancient civilization. He asked us if we would assist him by providing him protection from bandits that had been harassing them. We did so gladly. One of his crew approached us and asked us to kill Charleston and his crew so that the proceeds collected could be put to better use than a donation to a museum. We refused the scoundrel.

Once in the tomb something happened that drove Charleston's workers mad and they attacked us.  Sadly, we were forced to kill them.  At that point, Charleston determined that we were dealing with a civilization that venerated the ancient evil God, Kozah.  He immediately shut down the excavation but his pain and sadness in his revelation was obvious.  Charleston is a good man. I hope he will find something even more exciting in his future endeavors.

But…when we emerged with the idol of Kozah we were attacked by a Doomsayer.  Dynahier, Jaheira and Imoen provided valuable offensive and defensive spell support while Minsc, Khalid and I used our melee weapons to battle him close in.  Minsc took a couple of heavy blows and was forced to withdraw but not before he landed a blow or two of his own on the abysmal creature. We finally destroyed him after a pretty scrappy struggle.

Treasure of Note: (Legend: S=Sold; U=Party Use; St = Me; Mi=Minsc; Kh=Khalid, etc; Sb = Spellbook). Two-Handed Sword Cursed Beserking +3 (S); Idol of Kozah (S); Miscellaneous armor/bows/swords/gems (S); >1000 GPs

Leader Notes: Brage’s tale reminds me once again that evil is prevalent throughout the countryside.  It cannot, it must not, be allowed to triumph in the Faerun.  I’ve been given tools to assist in its destruction and it is my duty to my God to use them to His glory.

Current Disposition: Resting at the Nashkel Inn.

Next Steps: Fisherman’s Lake

Game Notes/Questions: Charleston, SC is my REAL home so I especially like this guy.  LOL

Promotions: Imoen advanced to 3rd Level Mage[/b] and added the spell Magic Missile to her memorized spells – all two of them (Sleep’s the other).  Later, after returning from escorting Brage safely to Nalin in the Nashkel Temple of Helm we returned to the site and Dynahier advanced to 7th level Invoker.[/b] However, she didn’t have any 4th Level Spells in her spellbook so we conducted a stealth mission into BG so she could invisibly visit Sorcerous Sundries and buy  4th level spells (Greater Malison (GM) , Spirit Armor, Otiluke’s Resilient Sphere) which weren’t available at any of our normal sources.  However, we later learned that Dy’s school of Magic does not allow GM so Imoen added it to her spellbook for future use.

@ Sapphire: Soren is certainly blazing some trails. I wish others would join us here. I enjoy adventuring with others and telling our stories. CKT

Thanks, and I wish that others would join us too. I'd like to read some more stories.

Congratulations on doing the Ruins of Kozah...That relic is crazy!

Update on Soren!

Soren got out of the tent, and found out that there were some...Amazons outside. Soren shuddered, he hated Amazons ever since he met that crazy man hater, Shar'teel. The amazons asked if his name was Soren. Soren actually thought about lying. However, he said that he was, and a battle broke out. The Amazons were slain. Soren somewhat felt good about himself.

Soren led his group to the Friendly Arm Inn, where Elminster was found...again. Soren told Elminster that he knew what he had to do, but he wanted to confer with him just incase he was wrong. Soren knew better than to disrespect a friend of Gorion's, especially one that came to Candlekeep many years ago when he was a child.

Then, after resting at the Friendly Arm, Soren led his group to Ulcaster. He spoke to the an undead, and killed it. Soren really felt good after that, considering the Undead wanted to kill him and wear his skin!

Then Soren spoke to the ghost Ulcaster, and promised to get a book from the basement of the school. There were many close calls down there. However, Soren did get the book, and returned to Ulcaster, and then he led he the group to Beregost were they are currently staying.

@ Sapphire: Good work. Icharyd is a nasty spook and Lamahla's a tough wench. Looks like your party is coming into their own.

Keep the news 'a comin'.
