Hi Jianson, which mods are you playing with? I know Hard Times and SCS but which others (can't find where you listed them, sorry)?

NPC Project
Unfinished Business
Jastey´s 'Mini-quests and encounters'
Item randomizer (although not with randomized scrolls)
Small tweaks that add bags of holding and a few exotic items (including two ioun stones that especially Imoen appreciates)

Also in a post on an earlier page I remember that you said there was 1.6 - 1.8 M xp in BG1... is that with or without including content added by mods?

I do not think the mods I play with add that much to the total XP - I've reached those numbers in vanilla TSC.

Much Needed Rest @ the FAI

Nashkel Mines to  Peldvale (Chapter 2)
Three times since I last sat down, quill in hand, my bodies’ rested on a Clerics stone-slab while they raised me from the dead. I’ve lost every member of this party at least once. Things have to change.

We headed back to the mines & after making sure there was nothing left on level 3 headed down to level 4. We battled a few more Kobolds, a slime, an ooze & a ghoul before heading into a cave. There we were immediately confronted w/more Kobolds before finding a Half-Orc, Mulahey who was ‘the master’ of the mining operation.  I changed up our tactics and focused on his ‘minion’ skeletons and Kobolds & let Mulahey beat me with his spells. The party ‘reorganized’ & took him out but I was wrong to take the focus of the biggest threat.

From there we used letters in Mulahey’s treasure chest to track down Tranzig, a mage, who was apparently a link between Mulahey and Tazok and the bandit’s. We found him @ Feldepost’s Inn in Beregost. Once again, I failed to direct our actions (AI was off) which led to confusion &, as a result, I took an ‘Acid Arrow’ &, maybe something else. I ended up at the Temple of the Morning. Once again, party members rallied us & we got him before he escaped town.

After taking out Tranzig we took samples of the tainted ore to Taerom Fuiruim @ the Thunderhammer and a vial of mysterious liquid we found in the mines to Thalantyr for examination.  We also received a request from an Officer Vai of the Flaming Fist to assist her against the Bandits - @ 50gp a scalp.

Key Event: Our encounter w/Tranzig led us to the Peldvale/Larswood area. Unfortunately, I led us into a disastrous fight w/some creatures, Ettercaps, we were unfamiliar w/& they licked us good. I ended up in the Temple of Wisdom under the care of Gellana Mirrorshade & so did Jaheira, Khalid & Garrick. Kivan sold his ‘Brazers of Archery’ in order to raise the gold to raise the four of us that lost our lives here.

Treasure Acquired: Legend: Zbyszko (Zb), Imoen (Im) etc., General Use (G); Spellbook (Sb); Sold (S)
Armor: Misc (S); Weapons: Battle Axe +1 (Zb), T.Axe’s (Zb); Potions: Absorbtion (G), Healing x2 (G); Scrolls: Identify (Ga/Sb), Charm Person (Kh/Sb), Sleep (Kh/Sb) Misc: Ring of Human Influence (Zb), Armor/Weapons (S), Gems/Jewelry (S); ~1800gps

Leader Notes: Stupid, stupid, stupid. Three combat breakdowns – all on me. I’ve got to do better. We need a change.

Current Disposition: Resting @ the Friendly Arm Inn

Next Steps: I hear there’s a festival in Nashkel. Despite my desire to track down Tazok ASAP, I think we need a break after battles in the mines & against six assassins & Tranzig. We’re going to take in the festival.

Game Notes/Questions: Does the mysterious liquid or tainted ore that we gave to Taerom Fuiruim & Thalantyr respectively ever lead to anything? I’ve tried to run this to ground but, best I can tell, Berrun Ghastkill is history.

Promotions: Zbyszko to Ftr/3 & improved skill to *** w/B.Axe; Khalid promoted to Thf/2 focusing new skills in O/Locks,H/Shadows,M/Silently,F/R-Traps; Kivan increased to Archer/3 from Archer 1 & improved skill to *** w/L.Bow

End of the Road in Peldvale (Chapter 3)

Key Event: Zybszko & party were wiped out by Black Talon Elite @ Peldvale.

Treasure Acquired:Armor: Misc (S); Weapons:  Potions:  Scrolls:  Misc:  Armor/Weapons (S), Gems/Jewelry (S); gps

Leader Notes: None

Current Disposition: Party destroyed

Next Steps: New PC

Game Notes/Questions: The final battle that wiped the party out was one of those cases where AI led the party into trouble. I use AI, most of time effectively, but @ times it can lead into unwanted danger. In this case, Imoen’s AI was set to ‘Thief Defensive’. The rest of the party was skirting the edge of the map but she lagged behind to “Hide in Shadows’ which she did. When trying to catch up to the rest of the party she encountered the BTE & attacked them b/c of her AI. I tried to get her out of there  but the ’Arrows of Ice’ caught her in the back. I should’a gotten the rest of the party out of there & regroup but tried to beat the BTE. Minsc had joined @ Bbn/7th but, even w/61 hps, he was quickly killed by ’Arrows of Ice’. Then Khalid went down. I tried to maneuver my PC into position and ‘overwhelm’ one of them and, hopefully, w/Jaheira’s help, work them down until we could focus on just one. It just didn’t work out that way. Jaheira expired split seconds before Zbyszko.

I’d actually reorganized the party dropping Khalid & Jaheira & picking up Branwen & Quail from the Nashkel Carnival. The party became my PC, Kivan, Branwen, Garrick, Quail & Imoen. We had just about finished Peldvale and were headed off the map to rest, resupply & head south to Larswood after a break @ FAI. Then, the last 3 BTE on the map, with help from a pack of Gibbering’s, destroyed the party w/the exception of Zbyszko & Quail. I only had 400gps which was enough to ‘raise’ Kivan (the others were 600gp). I raised him, dropped Quail & added Khalid & Jaheira back before inviting Minsc. I set out for Peldvale again but ended up taking it on the chin from the BTE.

I played this game very poorly as I was @ 5 reloads already. I had no ‘Potions of Healing’ but wanted to complete Peldvale. We kept doing so & then resting w/o encounter. I pushed my luck too far though.
With no one surviving the encounter, there’s just no way to justify having my PC raised.

I like this character & it was fun trying to portray ‘Zbyszko’ from the book, ‘The Teutonic Knights.’ I’m gonna take a break from that ideas & play a Cavalier/Templar Knight. Thinking about trying the ‘Zbyszko’ character again later.

Promotions: OBE

Key Event: None – yet!

Treasure Gained: 120GPs;  ArmorWeaponsPotionsScrollsMisc

Leader Notes: None

Current Disposition: Party destroyed

Next Steps: Candlekeep& beyond

Game Notes/Questions: Beginning a new PC, Seth Alexander. As always, my interest in The Crusades, & in particular, The Knights Templar colors my character. Seth Alexander, named for my son, is pictured as Arn, The Knight Templar, from the movie of the same name. As always, my character, boring as it may be to some, is Lawful & Good. His patron is the God of the Bible (even in fantasy I cannot pretend otherwise).

I’ll plan to stick to the usual suspects for my party, adding them as the game brings me across their paths. I may, for a time early in the game, add others until the main party is complete.

Since Seth Alexander is from Candlekeep, I will assume he is literate so he will keep his journal in the first person.

Oh dear, what a tragic end. Those guys can be nasty.

Good luck with the next character. Paladins have some interesting abilities. The Cavalier immunity to Fear, Charm and poison will sure come in handy. Now you only need to worry about Sleep, Hold and Confusion...

Word of advice: turn off the AI. Much safer in general, I think. If you have auto-pause on 'character's target destroyed' you can catch the right time to have that character pick a new target without wasting time in the battle even with the AI off.

And throw some Hold Person spells at the next batch of BTEs, will you? Without the SCS 'BTE and Iron Throne guard upgrade', Sleep works wonders on them, too.

                                                                            Another pack of Gibberlings

Seth Alexander (Candlekeep to Beregost) After 20 years @ Candlekeep, I finished my final day of training w/the soldiers & schooling w/the monks & left on a sudden journey w/Gorion. He’d been insistent that I hurry & gather my arms, armor & equipment but would not disclose why. It was obvious something was very wrong though & before I ever got out of the walls of Candlekeep I was twice attacked by assassins & shed their blood. Gorion & I left & started travelling cross country. When darkness fell we were ambushed by a huge armored fiend, two ogres & ‘some girl w/a Mace’. Gorion was killed. That morning I woke up to find Imoen. She’d followed us out of Candlekeep. I am thankful to have her w/me.

Imoen & I travelled Lion’s & Coast Way, sticking to the road, made it to the Friendly Arm Inn (FAI) & linked up w/Khalid & Jaheira as admonished. Imoen & I had to fight & kill 3 packs of Diseased Gibberling’s just to get to the FAI.

Key Event:As we were about to ‘take a breather’ when it became apparent that those days are behind me. Another assassin, this one a Mage named Tarnish, attacked me on the steps of the FAI. My Cavalier Mind Shield served me well & is teaching me to trust my training. Tarnish cast a spell that took Imoen completely out of the fight – but not before she hit him w/1 or 2 Magic Missiles (MM). His spell would have had me too but for the Mind Shield. Still, he landed 2 MM spells on me. I was lucky to counter w/2 Potions of Healing (PoH) on my belt & be able to quaff them back to back separating his MMs w/one PoH between them. After I quaffed the 2nd potion, I landed a Long Sword that sliced through his neck & torso killing him instantly.  Imoen regained her senses & rejoined me on the steps.

Injured, we ventured into the FAI & found Khalid & Jaheira w/o difficulty. We’re glad to have them w/us. We rested & made some equipment adjustments & headed south back along the road we’d come in on. Once again we ran into packs of Gibberling’s, these not the diseased sort. I think there were two different packs of 12.
We made it to Beregost & after checking the Feldepost’s Inn decided to rest up @ the Red Sheaf. There were only rooms for royalty in the Feldepost’s. The Red Sheaf became the second Inn in as many days in which I was attacked by an assassin, this one a Dwarf w/a Battle Axe. We separated,  Jaheira “Blessed” us & I cast Protection from Evil (PfE) on myself. I charged in & the battle spilled into the main tavern. Imoen, Khalid & Jaheira, meanwhile, stayed clear of the Dwarf using ranged weapons soon, together, we took him.

Ivy, elven Wild Mage, in Undercity
Coran scouted out the party of 6. Imoen opened up with Greater Malison from off-screen, followed by Chaos. Ivy cast Emotion. Send in the fire elemental and Faldorn, with heavy artillery from Coran and Shar-Teel. Game over (especially since the mage, Shaldrissa, failed the Emotion save). Ivy herself could go in and mop her up:

Image IPB

She was also getting revenge on Tamoko for that Flame Arrow way back in Lion's Way:

Image IPB
(Slightly more power in this one!)
Last time I was here, Tamoko got a Blade Barrier going, which had my characters run from her in fear. I must have disrupted that spell as she tried to cast it this time (or she never decided to use it, I don't know).

Durlag's Tower, continued
We made our way down to the elemental test level, killing some respawned critters along the way. I didn't manage to get us moved to the chessboard this time (I think that part is seriously buggy...). I have been able to come back a second time earlier, so I used the console to transport us there.

The exit from the chess board is weird. When you want to go down, the whole party must be gathered by the exit, but when you want to go up, taking only some of the party works fine. So the 'you must gather your party...' thing applies only from one direction. Anyway, the first batch of chess pieces that followed us were both Bishops and the Queen. Queen stayed close to the exit, so we could go there later and take her out. One of the bishops blocked Coran in with skeletons. Shar-Teel helped him out:

Image IPB

(I dunno why I keep wanting to write her name as 'Shar-Tell'. Must be the crossbow... Image IPB)

Next batch that chased us down had a Knight and some Pawns. Easy pickings. The third batch had both Rooks (archers), the second Knight and some more Pawns:

Image IPB

Only the King and one Pawn was left now. I took the battle at the board. King had Stoneskin up so in order to keep us safe, Coran used one of his precious Dispelling arrows so we could overpower the King quickly. The Pawn attacked Ivy. Once I managed to save her, I knew we had won:

Image IPB

Demonknight now. Coran buffed with several potions: Oil of Speed, Storm Giant Strength, Power and Magic Shielding. We entered the level under the effect of Pixie Dust. I sent down Coran alone.
Backstab 1. Demonknight drank extra healing potion.
Inviso potion
Backstab 2
Inviso potion
Now I made a huge mistake. Didn't wait long enough before doing
Backstab 3 (demonknight now Badly Injured)
Coran's 'spell equivalent action' period hadn't fully expired so he couldn't drink another potion before the demonknight stripped all his nice buffs with a Remove Magic. He just drunk antoher inviso potion between the Remove Magic was cast but before it had hit. So his magical invisibilty was now gone and another 'cooldown' period had just started. Yikes!

Demonknight took half his life with a PW:Kill. Dunno why it only did about 30 damage to him.

Shar-Teel stepped in and fired some bolts. Imoen added a Magic Missile, then another. MR kicked in but some missiles got through. Demonknight at Near Death now.

Fireball at the party! Faldorn failed save and died instantly. Shar-Teel hurt, but drunk potion and healed up. Imoen VERY badly hurt and had moral failure. I tried to have Ivy cast magic Missile but the AI moved her away to the right (probably because my other characters blocked the way).

Image IPB

Oh my, where is Coran?!! Must have been vaporized by the fireball earlier. This is bad, bad, bad!
In a desperate attempt to save Imoen, I had Shar-Teel valiantly keeping up the crossbow firing. She was cut down, and the helpless Imoen was next:

Image IPB

Only Ivy and her 13 HP left now! WTF am I going to do??
Ah, one Magic Missile left. He's at Near Death. Maybe...

Image IPB

NOT NOW! Oh, what a time for a useless surge. Big sigh of relief when she saved against the Symbol:Fear, though! Demonknight approached. Looks like he wants to finish me with the sword...

'Gulp'
Inviso potion.

Moved over to the other side. OK, he can't see me now. I need more ammo *Melf's Minute Meteors*, some distractions *Animate Dead* and protection from single-target spells *Improved Invisbility*.

Not surprisingly, demonknight chews up skeletons at an alarming rate. However, Ivy's second MMM hit finished him!

Image IPB

YES!!
(And no more chunked characters. Thanks to my holding containers (Bag of Holding in particular), nothing important needed to be left behind.)

Decided to hook up with Kivan again. I didn't find him in the first three places I looked but then I tried really hard to remember, and it dawned on me that he had been left at Shop of Silence. Welcome back.

Going to see if the Mirror of Opposition can be activated after the demonknight fight. This 'actual copies of the party' sounds interesting.

Either way, there is still the demon cult business in Ulgoth's Beard to deal with. It's going to be exciting.

Ivy, level 11 Wild Mage, 13 HP (5 deaths, CON=3)
Imoen, level 9 Thief  -> level 10 Mage, 33 HP (7 deaths, CON=9)
Faldorn, level 12 Druid, 49 HP (1 death, CON=10 (8 with Claw of Kazgaroth))
Shar-Teel, level 8 Fighter, 50 HP (2 deaths, CON=7)
Kivan, level 6 Ranger

@ Jianson: Close call there @ the end. A real heartstopper!

Are you gonna raise the rest of the party or build a new party around your PC and Kivan?

I'm dealing w/an annoying 'something' that's goin' on w/Minsc as a Barbarian. Something is causing him to 'level up' higher than he should when he joins. I've had the same problem before when I pick him up and he suddenly has his 'hit points' shoot way up.

I have three choices.
- I can re-load one of my mods (I think it's in UB w/the 'higher hit-points on level up option'
- I can choose not to play Minsc (I feel like I'm cheating suddenly having a 4th lvl Barbarian in
my group when most of us are 1st lvl)
- I can reload Level 1 NPC & make Minsc something other than a Barbarian since I've read
something somewhere that it's caused by the 'hard coding' or something in the Barbarian NPC

Oh well, gotta call it a night tonight anyway. Will figure out what I'm gonna do tomorrow.

When I went looking for Kivan, they had already been raised, at the Helm temple in Nashkel. I do not trust Ivy to travel by herself longer than she can stay invisible. :)

I went down to that chamber again, and it turns out that the Mirror of Opposition does nothing if the demonknight is dead. Bummer. I'll try it with my next character that gets here, if I'm feeling lucky.

Ivy, elven Wild Mage, with Imoen, Faldorn, Shar-Teel and Kivan
Soultaker dagger finale
We arrived at Ulgoth's Beard under the effect of Pixie Dust (travelling from BG takes 16 hours). We moved to somewhere safe, conjured up a fire elemental and I had Faldorn initiate the talk. The Enforcers could hit the elemental with some weak spells, but nobody else could hit it. I just had to wait out the fight. I sent in another elemental to speed things up.

Moved over to their main building and mopped up the few that were by the stairs. Faldorn (protected with Chaotic Commands and Remove Fear, just in case) entered the building and lured out a few guards. Rinse and repeat, and the Wizard followed. This bugger was a bit harder to handle but we managed.

Kivan screwed up (just a little) in the basement. Carol happened to see him before I had planned her to, so the Beast was summoned before I had killed any cultists. Kivan exited right away and was given some potions from the party (just in case). He managed to stealth to a corner where only one cultist could see him. They do not fight back unless you are next to them and the Beast can not hear them call (Carol herself can call on it, though). With some careful planning and maneuvering, Kivan could kill all 6 cult guards (needed >150 arrows!).

He got Melfed by Carol:
Image IPB

Kivan shot Dispelling arrow, followed by two biting arrows. Carol was in trouble but now the Beast showed up. Kivan drank inviso potion and exited. Down again, stealth in the corner and hit Carol with another poison arrow from the shadows. Back to the corner and hide. Now they both followed him, even though he was in shadows. Hmm.

He got up the stairs, re-stealthed and backed away from the stairs. Beast and mage both came up the stairs and Carol decided to go outside while the beast stayed there. Perfect.
Image IPB
She was a pretty tough opponent (MM seqeuncer that did a number on Kivan) but not nearly as scary without demon backup.

The way Aec'Letec  was positioned was great for me. Inside the building, by the stairs, but behind a bookcase so it couldn't see the exit. Ivy entered and simply threw a Cloudkill far into the room. Aec passed 7-8 MR checks and then croaked. Yay!
(Did you know that you have to go down to the basement in order to get the 16k experience?)

Final Battle
I took Minsc back into the party. May as well be a full party for this fight. I gave him a full plate (and packing steel!), Helmet of Defense, some arrows and potions.

Pixie Dust, and enter temple. Imoen looked for traps but didn't find any. Huh? Maybe that part is different with the full SCS add-on here?

I knew the following about the SCS version:
* There is a 5th person there: Diarmid, a Fighter/Mage (like Angelo)
* Sarevok can't be damaged unless at least one of the others are dead
* Sarevok can't be killed unless all the other four are dead
* In Alesia's reports in this forum, I have seen a screenie with a skeleton warrior from this battle. So they will show up in some way

I pondered how to start. The combo of using Winski's amulet (Prot. from Evil 10') and my Cacofiend scroll was tempting. But I decided not to go that route. Instead, I used my trusty Fire Elementals. Faldorn got two of them on the first casting. I knew that was possible, but this was the first time in this game it has happen. What a great time! Sent one in, and Sarevok rushed it.
'Sarevok - weapon ineffective'
Say what? I though for sure he had a Two-handed Sword of Chaos +2.

That's great news. But now I wanted to trigger the other guys into the fight and get them to waste their best stuff. I moved the elemental up onto the platform. Fight was now on, buffs triggered like crazy. Lots of attacks, but nobody could hit the elemental. All had normal weapons. OK, Semaj could hit with his MMMs, but the elemental is of course immune to the fire component, so the damage from them was small. Semaj eventually cast two lightning bolts. They bounced once in the entrance wall but didn't hit any of us. Diarmid and Semaj now down to Magic Missiles and Chromatic Orbs. That onslaught killed the elemental, but not before the elemental had killed Tazok and the skeleton warrior that replaced him (apparently, the bodies of all four of Sarevok's buddies get used one more time...)

The second elemental had been waiting by Faldorn since it was summoned. This elemental now spent a really long time working on Diarmid and Semaj (lots of Stoneskins, Mirror Images, etc. to chew through). It also had to endure getting Emotioned and Spooked. It saved against Confusion twice, though. Eventually, it killed Diarmid and his skeleton.

Angelo had been away from this fight. Suddenly (elemental was still punching Semaj) he cast Detect Invisibility. Not good, he has lots of spells left. All six of us drank inviso potions (not many left now) and I directed the elemental over to attack Angelo. He took a beating, until he decided to flee with an Invisibility + Mirror Image Sequencer. OK, let's have the elemental kill Semaj first then. It did that and now it was just elemental vs. Sarevok. Hm, I need to find Angelo first. Invisibility Purge seemed like a bad option because that would have revealed my whole party.

After a while, I could see where Angelo was because he drank a healing potion and I saw the text.
"Nicely done, sis!"
Image IPB
Elemental damaged Angelo some more but then it timed out. Wow, this fight has been going on for game hours...

Angelo and Sarevok seemed to stay put, so it was an easy decision to have Faldorn conjure up a third elemental. Angelo was soon dead.

But before gloating over the win, I was curious about the loot these guys had left. Minsc drank a Magic Blocking potion and looted the platform and the other corpse piles. Pretty expected stuff, but this was a cool find:
Image IPB
Hey, I want some of those arrows! They are cool.

Wanna know what Ivy did now? Drank a few Genius potions and scribed the Cacofiend scroll. Could be fun (and approprioately chaotic!) to use in BG2. For quite some time, she will only be able to cast it with Dweomers. :D

OK, time for 'brother´ to bite it.

(Darth Vader voice: "I have you now.")

Imoen cast Malison
Faldorn cast Doom
Shar-Teel peppered Sarevok full of Polymorph bolts. He saved five or six times, but that was not enough:
Image IPB

Faldorn stepped in and stabbed 'Squirrelvok' with the Dagger of Venom. But it was the elemental that got the last word. Of course - those guys have dominted the gameplay ever since Faldorn reached 200k exp. back in the Ice Age of this campaign...:D

Entering the BG2 minimal reloads thread:
Ivy, level 11 Wild Mage, 7 HP (but will summon a 24 HP familiar pretty much the first thing she does in BG2), 457573 experience, bringing over Claw of Kazgaroth
Imoen, level 9 thief -> level 10 Mage, 33 HP, 110000 + 326989 experience

I need to do better about reading the BG1 threads. Congrats Jianson (very amusing demonknight battle!), and best of luck CKT. I appreciate the RPing particularly. I'm not as good about it myself.

The reports of both Charleston Knight templar and Jianson have been fascinating. Well done both of you on your reports, and you Jianson on completing ToSC. Does Hard Times make a big difference? I've never tried it.

Does Hard Times make a big difference?

It does, especially before chapter 5. It impacts both the general economy (majorly) and the availability of items. Some examples:

- Some basic stuff (bows in particular) is more expensive (even at Winthrop´s shop, but he is still cheaper than the other stores). Enchanted ammo is also quite expensive.
- Nearly all the 'hidden' (not so hidden in Tutu with the Alt function...) spots in the wilderness have been heavily nerfed. The Ring of Wizardry spot at FAI has a Find Familiar scroll instead (nice for a Sorcerer!). No Ring of Protection, no diamond, no Ankheg Armor, etc. The only one left untouched is the water opal by the ettercap cave on Arghain's map.
- Instead of having 20 +1 arrows and 10 arrows of ice, Black Talon Elites spawn with only 4 arrows of ice (and they often manage to use up some of them)
- Much fewer +1 weapons and armors in general to be found
- Greywolf has a +1 Halberd, Melium has a regular Katana. On the other hand, Sendai has a Scimitar +1.
- Charges are nerfed. Algernon´s Cloak has 3 charges. Found wands usually have 1-a few. Bought (even "re-charged") wands and necklaces of missiles seem to max out at 5 charges (and such a wand of fire or monster summoning costs over 20000 gold)
- Non-magical metal armor pieces have a chance to break in battle. Even Full Plate. Can be nasty if it happens early in a tough fight.
- Ulgoth's Beard shop has had many items removed: ring of invisbility, wand of the heavens, +3 staff, cloak of displacement, greenstone amulet (although with Item Randomizer, you can find one in a random location - with 4 charges).
- On Ivy´s run, I have not found any magical Short Bow at all.

Since I use item randozer as well, I sometimes do not know if items have been removed or just moved somewhere else (especially in my current run that randomizes scrolls as well). There was probably at least a +1 Short Bow somewhere but I didn't find it. Randomizer makes the WIS tome in DT into a tome of a random type. In Ivy's run, I found two tomes of WIS and STR, one each of CHA, CON and DEX. Never found the INT tome...

I did a Hard Times run or two with a 2HS proficiency. There are very few normal 2HS's available and each one I found broke very quickly (a 2 handed sword wielded by an 18/nn fighter type would have a huge strain on it so you could argue that is realistic). I then spent half the game using non-proficient weapons until I could get Spiders Bane as I wanted to maximise 2HS style. The previously available +1 version had been removed too.

Macready spotted my comments and said it was intentional for some weapon types to be in limited supply and 2HS was towards one extreme. As I was in a 2HS phase at the time I removed the mod. I'd enjoyed it until then but metal weapons break very quickly so be prepared to use staffs, spears or clubs more than might otherwise be the case.

Wow! I've been missing so much. I couldn't log in b/c of the EA/Origin merger or whatever it was. Finally.

@ Jianson: Congrats to you! So great that you're off and running over in BG2 MRC. I'll have to start going over there now.

Sadly, as I mentioned earlier, something goofed up in my last game load and Minsc is out of sorts. For me, I can't stand to play if I know something in the 'load' isn't right so I had to reload. Then, when I reloaded my option to make it necessary to identify all magic items seems not to have taken either. So...I'll have to go back and start with NPC1 Project and work my way back through to see if I can get it right.

Looking forward to going back, since I had to reload anyway, and playing my LG Knight/Fighter again. As I read the novel I'm basing him on, I'm having fun imagining him as a PC. He'll start, maybe tonight..hopefully tonight.

As for Hard Times, the whole intent of the mod is to simulate the fact that the Iron Crisis really is a crisis. Without the mod, everyone in the game is talking about the crisis but it's having no impact in the stores, or on the armor/weapons.

The mod makes it smart, when you find that second set of Splint Mail or Chain Mail, to pack it away - just in case.

I always carry a second weapon in my gear and, at least a second set of armor at one of the inn's or something, i.e. I don't automatically sell every one I find as some I might need.

I like Hard Times as it adds to the feel of the Iron Crisis so I never play w/o it but Jianson is right, treasure is way less lucrative in a Hard Times game. On the other hand, the bad guys have the same problem. Often the monsters weapon breaks during melee instead of mine. Now that's a good thing.

Using the item randomizer makes it really different when you play through with Hard Times.

One last thing. Magical weapons and armor do not break so once you land one of those, you're golden.  They're just not nearly as plentiful as they are when playing w/o Hard Times - Good Times  I call it.

@Jianson - Awesome on defeating Sarevok! Good luck in the BG2 MRC thread!

@CKT - I've tried Hard Times. The concept of the mod was interesting, but I kind of didn't like it. Also, ouch on the glitching/bugging. I hate it when that happens. Hopefully, you'll be back up and running in no time!

@SapphireIce: Nice to see ya back on the boards. The new avatar threw me for a sec. Are ya bringing another challenger any time?

Got everything relaoded, just didn't have any playing time after I got done. Lookin' forward to lots of playing time this weekend.

The new Avatar is of my Mage that I'm playing in DA: O. I'm planning on bringing another challenger in after I do a playthrough of BG:EE, hence why I'm playing DA: O and eventually, DA2. I love the DA2 Grey Warden Armor.

Its good that you got everything reloaded, and I'm looking foward to your updates!

                                                              Introducing Zbyszko of Candlekeep

[i]I’ve reloaded my game and I’m introducing my new, old PC.

Going try a run through with this character again as I remain enamored with the book I’m reading and I’m taking his persona from there. Every day as I turn its pages I can see the protagonist as a Baldur’s Gate PC.

As with my first try at this, this PC is a Fighter, Lawful, Good and ignorant of the real world around him despite years of academic tutoring among the monks at Candlekeep.

When not being tutored by the monks he was constantly training with the soldiers of Candlekeep. He is naturally gifted as a fighter, is strong, hearty and quick and carries the pedigree of a knight.

Being from Candlekeep and in keeping with medieval convention his title is, Zbyszko of Candlekeep.

While not a Paladin, his aura of pure goodness attracts followers and he will naturally gravitate toward NPCs of the same alignment. I remember a line from the old 2nd Edition Dungeon Masters Guide, or maybe it was the Players Handbook, that said Paladin’s are most at home in the company of Lawful Good Fighters and Clerics. So too, Lawful Good Fighters prefer their Paladin and Cleric counterparts.

He is pious in the extreme. His fortunes he attributes to God; his misfortune to his own failure or the will of God. He first thought on completion of a successful and lucrative adventure is to pay alms and tithes at a Lawful and/or Good temple where the gold can be used.

Zbyszko and other knights in the novel almost always carry a battleaxe and sword, so those will be this PCs preferred weapons, which is good b/c my PCs rarely have a missile weapon so this will allow me to use the occassional 'Throwing Axe.'

Zbyszko’s dialogue choices will again reflect his naiveté until he gains a little more wisdom as a result of adventure. I don’t know how I’ll manage this change, chapter to chapter maybe? Maybe as he gains points from the various scrolls that inch that attribute upward. I don’t know.

I’ll be careful not to use my own knowledge of the game to lead my character to places he wouldn’t know of – although I will allow the party to collect those few items that are scattered about in tree trunks, rock crevices etc. [b]if
the party is travelling there anyway... but we won’t head all the way across a map to pick up a ring or a scroll that's in a hole in the ground.

Unlike in the novel, and this is where I take a little liberty, Zbyszko's lesson's with the monks have made him literate and he carries quill and parchment with which to record his thoughts. These thoughts will appear in the forum.

No turning back. I know he’ll be vulnerable as a vanilla fighter , especially early, and I expect him to assume room temperature a few times. Still, I’m all in for this PC. Here goes.

I can foresee that if I install Hard Times, I would have to uninstall mods that introduce items at the same time, otherwise my party would be way overpowered. I think that it could well be a mod for my future games, but I would have to reconsider my entire set-up so it is not a decision to be taken lightly as I have a plethora of mods installed..

@ GtW,

For what it's worth to you, I DO know that the guide I use for installing mods says that Hard Times goes first before BG UB, NPC 1 Project, Level 1 NPCs, BG Tweaks etc.

We’re forced to camp outside since we’ve lost our welcome @ the Nashkel Inn

                                                                             Travel to Nashkel

I write w/a heavy heart having lost Gorion shortly after we left Candlekeep. More assassins. Gorion tried to protect me &, to my shame, I left him to fight alone. It is of no comfort that he ‘told me’ to run. Imoen joined me the next morning having slipped out of Candlekeep on our heels. I’m glad to have her w/ me. Following Gorion’s direction we headed to the Friendly Arm Inn (FAI) to seek Khalid & Jaheira, old friends of his. On the way we battled Diseased Gibberling’s & Xvarts. The former weren’t much trouble, the latter a little more so. Arriving @ FAI we were accosted by another assassin, a mage named Tarnish. W/the help of the FAI guards we escaped certain death & defeated him. Among the booty we acquired his Spellbook which Imoen seems to be studying every free moment. Khalid & Jaheira were adamant that we go to Nashkel. Everything else seemed to point that way also. We travelled south back thru the Coast Way battling more Gibberling’s & some bandit’s on the way. We stayed in Beregost, where again we were attacked by an assassin, this one a dwarf. We defeated him w/some difficulty. We rested for the night, resupplied @ the Thunderhammer Smithy & moved southward thru the S. Beregost Road and the N. Nashkel Road. The road brought us battle w/two Ogrillons, a band of Hobgoblins & almost found us arrested by the Flaming Fist for banditry.

Key Event: In Nashkel we were attacked by an assassin named Neira @ the Nashkel Inn.She cast a Rigid Thinking spell on me & in my confusion I swung my axe hitting both Imoen &, to our chagrin, killing a commoner who was sitting nearby. Khalid & Jaheira killed Neira w/o me or Imoen helping. Unfortunately, our reputation has been severely damaged by this event & the innkeeper wants us nowhere near his inn. Luckily we're not thrown out of Nashkel entirely - or worse. Stil, we’re forced to camp outside the town while we investigate the mine.

Treasure: Gold/Gems/Jewelry> 154 GPs; miscellaneous jewelry/gems( sold); Armor/weapons: Helm of Infravision (sold), Armor of Attraction +2 (sold), miscellaneous arms/armor (sold or kept for use); Potions/scrolls: Tarnish’s Spellbook: Magic Missile, Chromatic orb, Burning Hands, Remove fear, Sleep, Shield, Armor. Also, Grease, Shield, Protection from Evil, Protection from Petrification. (Imoen has the Spellbook/scrolls & has created some little book or something she’s carrying w/her)

Leader Notes: None

Current Disposition: Sitting by a camp fire east of Nashkel.

Next Steps: Nashkel Mines

Promotions: Imoen to Thf-Swbk 2 (increased OLocks 35%, MSilently 35%, F/Traps 35%, HShadows 30%)

Current Party:(Reputation: 7 Disliked)

We ‘knocked the dust off our sandals” & left the evil Gnoll Stronghold completely vanquished. There were no survivors. Next we purged the evil from the Nashkel Mines!

We met & joined w/a Barbarian named Minsc in Nashkel. At his insistence, we diverted our immediate intended course from the Nashkel Mines to aid him in rescuing ‘his witch’ Dynahier from a Gnoll Stronghold SW of Nashkel. It was a long journey & we had to return to Nashkel to seek aid from Nalin @ the Temple of Helm, as we lost Imoen in a battle the first time we set out. When we finally got to the Gnoll Stronghold we tore through it destroying the Gnolls & their Chieftain & countless Xvarts that served the Gnolls & inhabited the caves around the stronghold. We rescued Dynahier & welcomed her into the party. Her skills as a mage are sorely needed & I find her worldview very much to my liking.

The six of us headed next to the Nashkel Mines. The foreman was not as receptive to our visit as we hoped but he gave us a day to investigate. We worked our way through the mines & found them infested w/Kobolds. The deeper we went, the more & the tougher they were. We rested on the 2nd level & out of caution before we descended to the 4th & final level.

Key Event: We found Mulahay, a Half-Orc Cleric, on the 4th level. He was served by a ‘hornet’s nest’ of Kobolds & skeletons that served as his minions. We were badly positioned for this battle & Khalid, Imoen, Jaheira & Dynahier were all surrounded during the fight. We defeated Mulahay & his minions but lost Khalid, Jaheira & Dynahier. We had to carry their supplies & equipment w/us when we left which necessitated a second trip to the mines afterword to retrieve the bulk of Mulahey’s treasure from his treasure chest. We were rewarded handsomely upon our return to Nashkel by Berrun Ghastkill.

Treasure: Gold/Gems/Jewelry>1600GPs, Ring of I/Vision (Zb), F/Opal Ring etc. (sold); Armor/weapons: , Br/Def AC6 (Dy), Sh/Amulet (Dy), Mg Robe/FR (Dy), Kn/Robe (Dy); SSwd +1 (Im), M/Blade (TBD) Potions/scrolls:  Charm Person, Sleep, Identify, Web

Leader Notes: Mulahay was directing the effort to slow the flow of iron using a mineral poison. Letters indicate he was working for someone named Tazok & has a contact named Tranzig in Beregost.

Current Disposition: Sitting by a camp fire east of Nashkel near the carnival.

Next Steps: To confront Tranzig @ Beregost; @ Berrun Ghastkills suggestion we'll take samples of the ore to Taerom Fuiruim & the mineral poison to a mage named Thalantyr @ High Hedge. It’s also clear that the bandits on the roads are going to have to be dealt with in order to improve the flow of iron again.

Level Up: Zbyszko to Ftr 2 & 3; Khalid to Ftr 2 & 3; Imoen to Thf-Swbk 3 (increased OLs 40%, MS 40%, F/Ts 40%, HS 40%); Jaheira to Ftr/2//Drd/2 (added spell CLWs); Dynahier joined @ Mg-Invk/3
