Having rested & resupplied after our adventures in/around Gullykin I decided we needed to recon the Firewine Bridge itself so I headed there next.  The impressive structure is long since crumbling, destroyed in a battle some 300 years ago. Other than a Kobolds & skeletons I found little of interest other than crossing swords w/ & defeating a swordsman who claimed to be the best swordsman in Faerun. 
 
Key Event:  If I were reincarnated as a Ranger, my racial enemy would w/o a doubt be the Ogre Mage. I’ve never met a demon or devil but short of those, I’ve believe the Ogre Made is the most vile creature in the realm. There’s the one in the Cloakwood Mines & another in the Baldur’s Gate sewers, both surrounded w/dead bodies; the Ogre Mage last week that had been wreaking havoc on the Hobbits in Gullykin & the one who’d entrapped the Neried near the coast, not to mention those we’ve met on the road – they’ve all been hideous and evil to the core. We met another here who’d entrapped a young female adventurer. We tried to help her but released the vile monster & destroyed him.

After that, I took us on over to Ulcaster where we trekked around the ruins of the Ulcaster School. We ran into a number of various Hobgoblin types & skeletons galore. We did run into a Skeleton Warrior who put up a fight but we took him out. We met the ghost of Ulcaster who indicated a tome somewhere in the rubble beneath. We went down there & went through clearing the place out quickly, killing mostly wolves, including a Vampiric Wolf. We found the tome & returned it to Ulcasters Ghost. The most harrowing part in all this was, once again, inching through a dungeon w/o a thief. Jaheira used her Find Traps spell to great affect w/Minsc out front w/her as our point man. Great job team!

We headed SE to the Lonely Peaks to see what was in those peaks. We found it to be inhabited, largely by Ogres and their ilk, Wolves, Kobolds, Xvarts, etc. Nothing much to challenge us & it was a tiring trip out of the way. Still I’m glad I didn’t leave the ‘stone unturned.’
 
Key Event:  We were able to aid a farmer whose only cow was being attacked by  a squad of Xvarts. Imoen used a Wand of Sleep and Dy, a Wand of fear and that incapacitated all of them. We cut ‘em down & got their gold. The farmer was grateful. 
 
I allowed us to enjoy some downtime at the Burning Wizard before we begin heading north.

I’ve run out of ideas for where to go next here in Amn so I’m slowly leading my followers N w/my mind set on visiting Ulgoth’s Beard soon. Last time I passed through Lion’s Way & Coast Way I stayed to the roads, as I was on quest.  Now that I’m taking it slowly, I decided we’d see what else lay here. We battled a few Gibberling’s, many wolves, some Xvarts a Black Bear & an Ogre. 
 
Key Event:   After a small battle w/Gibberling’s, Imoen advanced as a Mage. This is key, as we desperately await return of her thieving skills.

Before we headed N to the Fishing Village we made a diversion back to Beregost, as we had met a Gnome, Landrin, @ the FAI, who needed help ridding her home near the Jovial Juggler of Huge Spiders. We knocked them out easily after Imoen cast a Sleep spell sending 3 of 4 of them into dreamland – but only temporarily.
 
Finally reaching the Fishing Village we met a Paladin, Ajantis, on the road. I was inclined to bring him along as an ally but in the end decided to keep my followers, ‘as is.’ Later, we met a group of fisherman who bewailed their predicament b/c a Priestess of Umberlee was making t impossible for them to fish, even killing two of them w/rapidly rising water. We looked into it for them but upon meeting the priestess she was only a young girl. As a Priestess of Umberlee I didn’t trust her even though I believed her story that the fishermen were no saints themselves. Sadly, my distrust caused her to continue her attacks & we killed her. We returned to the fishermen & let them knew we didn’t like being lied to & used as pawns. We didn’t kill them but we did take a Bowl of Water Elemental Control that they’d stolen from the Priestesses mother. 
 
Key Event:   From there we had the sad duty of assisting a farmer, Brun, in locating his missing son. We’d found a large hole in the ground earlier & when Brun laid out the details we knew where to look. We found Ankheg tunnels &, sadly, the body of Brun’s son Nathan was in a treasure cove therein. We went well beyond the quota we’d agreed to w/the local Ranger but I was so angry for farmer Brun that I felt justified. We informed Brun & left him some gold to assist him in rebuilding.

I left the Fishing Village behind and headed toward Ulgoth’s Beard. 
 
Key Event:   We travelled through the Farmlands and were able to help the farmers’ there. It seems somehow there land had become infested with Zombies. We made quick work of them and gave the farmers some peace of mind – and rest.

Treasure of Note:  I purchased a Cloak of Displacement for Minsc, a Greenstone Amulet for Khalid, a Scroll of Greater Malison for Imoen & a Scroll of Improved Invisibility for Dynahier. The latter two are now written in their respective spell book’s.

Our first adventure out of Ulgoth’s Beard was @ the behest of a mage named Shandalar, to retrieve a cloak for him. We agreed & were teleported to an island where we were greeted by a huge Polar bear. We killed him & descended into a cave that was a prison for mages meticulously carved into the rock. Around every corner, it seemed, were Winter Wolves or spell casters. As a Wizard Slayer I was in my element. We moved ahead as we are accustomed to in labyrinths where traps might lay, i.e. Minsc on point using his Stealth & Jaheira following closely using Find Traps. 
 
Key Event:   Almost immediately we stumbled on a wizard who issued challenge to Minsc. Minsc withdrew & signaled us to position ourselves. We played ‘cat & mouse’ & finally drew the mage to where we could all bring force against him. I fired a bolt & then charged w/Kondar. Jaheira cast Dispel Magic, Dy a Spell Thrust & Immy, Melf’s Acid Arrow. Khalid & Minsc were firing arrows when suddenly the mage caught Jaheira, Khalid & Immy w/ Confusion. The mage died but when I moved forward a 2nd mage appeared & began hostilities. Now we had to fight w/o Jaheira, Khalid or Immy & avoid them randomly attacking us. I was struck by Melf’s Acid Arrow, for the second time. A third mage appeared & began attacking me w/Magic Missiles. I was sucking badly. I kept quaffing Elixir’s of Health between sword strokes @ the 2nd mage. It was 3 on 3. Minsc was lethal w/his bow & Dy was going toe to toe w/the 2nd mage. I had to step back & revert to my crossbow hoping to avoid more attacks until I could heal sufficiently. Before I knew it, the job was done & we were standing over the dead attackers.

We ended up killing 5 mages, ~ 5 Ankheg’s & ~ 8 Winter Wolves. The last mage, w/the cloak Shandalar wanted was a lot of talk but the battle was underwhelming. Almost as soon as we ascended we were teleported back to Ulgoth’s Beard & Shandalar. 
 
Treasure of Note:  Not much really. A couple of wands but we have wands out the wazoo!

We are going to sell some Ankheg Shells & Winter Wolf pelts, then it’s off to Durlag’s Tower.

Durlag's Tower without thief skills?

You would have done better to have started that before dualling Imoen.
Leave the party and sneak her in to deal with all the traps. You can use oil of speed plus thieving potions to avoid having to use too many potions. Just deal with the traps, not the enemies.
Then come back later and deal with the enemies.

I recon’d outside of Durlag’s Tower & found little of interest in the way of opposition. Durlag’s Tower appears to be formidable Motte & Bailey Castle. As I approached my followers & I were confronted by a Battle Horror. Tough competitors they are & we defeated him but had to withdraw to heal. Upon return we encountered another Battle Horror & defeated him w/difficulty also.    The drawbridge was down & Ike was waiting impatiently for me there. I followed him over the moat & into the tower walls w/o challenge. Ike led us into to the entrance hall of the Motte. It was just a ‘dog & pony’ show until a Demon Knight appeared & started tossin’ Fireballs all over the place. We attacked him and tried to take him out but he stepped thru some kinda portal & disappeared before we could finish our work. We had to retire to heal as we were scorched pretty good. 
 
Key Event:   Afterword, I had us withdraw again & rest before returning and finish reconnoitering in the castle courtyard & walls. There we came to battle w/a 3rd Battle Horror, this one accompanied by skeleton’s w/Long Bows.

We had another tough fight there & then on the opposite side of the castle walls ran into a Doom Guard accompanied by more skeletons. We killed him too but these fights are draining. We finally returned to the tower & inside we moved carefully w/Jaheira Finding Traps accompanied by Minsc using Stealth on point. Even so we tripped some traps & @ times I forced trapped chests out of frustration. Dy & Immy each carry a Knock spell but we’d used ‘em up. We killed 8 or 10 Ghasts and cleared the main floor & partially cleared the second floor and basement before retiring to rest & replenish our spells & strength.

Durlag's Tower without thief skills?


Yeah, I am doing this a second time w/o a thief. It really through a wrench into my PCs 'minimal reloads' last time through.  Last time, however, I dualed Immy right before she would have gone to 8th level Thief.  This time, I dualed her as soon as she reached 7th, thinking the extra experience would go toward getting her closer to having rolled over before hitting DsT.  Didn't work. 

Means I have to go real slow & use Find Traps so that I can avoid them or work around them.  I try to play each game as if it were my first though, so I don't allow myself to evade them using methods I could only know b/c I've played before. Surprisingly, you can go around the very edge of some of them.

To compensate, I have Jaheira carry 3 Find Traps & both Immy & Dy carry a Knock spell. 

I think Immy will get to 8th soon so we'll be able to put her thieving skills to work soon.

The 3rd & 4th levels up in Durlag’s Tower revealed challenges I’d not seen before. Minsc & Jaheira were recon’ing the hallways & rooms w/Jaheira searching using her Find Traps spell while Minsc moved just aheadof her using his Stealth ability
 
Key Event:   On the 3rd level up w/encountered our first Ghost. Minsc & Jaheira stumbled on him in a room. He initially thought Minsc was Durlag. When he realized he wasn’t he attacked. Minsc fired off an Arrow +1 from his Composite Longbow +1 & scored a hit.  Jaheira dropped a Flame Strike from her Wand of the Heaven’s on him.They conducted retrograde & warned us to position ourselves for combat. Nothing happened so Minsc moved back down the hall using Stealth. He tried to launch another arrow but I’m not sure he was able to. He retired again in hopes we would draw the Ghost out. We did & we attacked w/Dy firing off a Spell Thrust & Khalid charging w/Harrower +1. I charged into for melee & we killed him quickly but the Ghost left us in Chaos before he succumbed & there were some tense moments waiting for the spell to wear offWe retired to Nashkel to rest and recuperate.

On the top level up, Minsc & Jaheira encountered a Succubus our 1st Demoness. Minsc tried to attack & was hit w/a Dire Charm. Jaheira backed into the main hall & Minsc didn’t pursue. The Succubus appeared in the hall & we attacked w/spells & melee but she disappeared, this time leaving me Dire Charmed. The remaining party separated & waited & waited & waited while avoiding me. Minsc’s Dire Charm wore off& returned to the main hall. The Succubus reappeared & we attacked w/Minsc firing the decisive blow to kill her. Later, we finished clearing the basement of Ghasts & found a treasure of GPs & gems under a brick in the floor.  We returned to Nashkel after a short foray into the 1st labyrinth level.

I took my followers deeper into Durlag’s Tower. We battled Wraith & Phase Spiders, Ghasts, Skeleton’s & Greater Doppelgangers. The most dangerous part was loosing the treasure in the trapped bookshelves. I had the party vacate the rooms & hunkered down knowing I was likely to take damage. I’m well protected against lightning & somewhat against fire & cold & magic.
 
Key Event:   I eventually came across & questioned 4 warders who were guarding entrance to a deeper level.  Each tested us w/a riddle. After working our way over & around traps, Phase Spiders, Wraith Spiders, Skeleton Warriors, Ghasts & trapped chests to decipher the riddles we did so. As we answered warders’ riddle they disappeared until I handed a bottle of wine to the last of the 4, we were attacked by ALL 4. They put an absolute beating on us. I couldn’t pull Minsc away & tried to conduct a retrograde to regroup. I got all but Minsc to the basement pursued by 3 warders but Khalid, Dy & finally Immy were slain there. We killed only 1 of them.  Jaheira & I moved to the main floor pursued by 2 warders, 1 which we destroyed w/difficulty. Unable to shake the last we removed ourselves from the tower to heal. Jaheira quaffed a Potion of Invulnerability & died immediately???  I was alone. Jaheira had our Potion Case so I had access to all our Potions of Healing. Having healed I continued to battle the warder but he got the best of me time & again. I finally damaged him w/a Bolt of Lightning & then pulled out Kondar realizing his blows, though painful & numerous weren’t overly damaging. I finally landed the fateful blow & he was gone. I quaffed other Potions of Healing & then returned to the basement & the 1st labyrinth level to begin collecting my followers’ equipment. I was unmolested as I collected all of their belongings, carrying the most important w/me & putting the rest in chests in the tower to collect later. Upon return to Nashkel Nalin was able to Raise Dead using each person’s personal items to draw their life force from. We collected ourselves, rested & returned to collect the remainder of our equipment.

My followers & I slowly, painfully, worked our way thru the 2nd labyrinth level of Durlag’s Tower. Jaheira used Find Traps effectively & Minsc moved on point utilizing Stealth as they performed reconnaissance. We took losses here & made more than 1 trip back to Nalin @ the Temple of Helm in Nashkel for Raise Dead services. 
 
Key Event: We tripped a trap in a False Exit Room deep in the back of the labyrinth. Suddenly we were surrounded by 3 Skeleton Warrior’s (SWs), 1 with a Long Bow. We were in a bad place. We didn’t dare go forward b/c we had yet to explore it & were bound to run into traps. We also knew there was a trap in the back hall that we’d have to skirt to the far left if we went back. I tried to retrograde us to gain some space by moving around the trap, hoping to lose the SWs, @ best, or maybe the Skelton Warriors would trip in on themselves. It didn’t work. We got jammed up & Dy fell, then Minsc before we got out of the room. I got Immy, Khalid & Jaheira around the trap & to the far end of the hall where we turned to make a defense against 2 SWs that chased us. Unfortunately we tripped a fireball on ourselves & suddenly we were all injured in need of a vacation. All quaffed Potions of Healing, then turned to try & damage the SWs but they wouldn’t fall & we weren’t landing many blows. We killed 1 but lost both Khalid & Jaheira. I tried to get Immy back through the Urn Room to the Teleport Room but she fell there. I was alone. I finally killed the last of the 2 SWs that had chased us & then went back to False Exit Room where the SW w/the Longbow still waited. I killed him & then started the tedious & arduous duty of collecting everyone’s equipment & storing what I couldn’t carry until I could get them all raised in Nashkel & return. I blame my poor leadership, overconfidence and impatience in rushing through the dungeon for this failure.

After getting my party raised, we returned & regrouped for more difficult times ahead. Just beyond the False Exit Room we found Kiel’s Deathbed Room guarded by 3 or 4 Dwarven Doom Guards. I knew when we opened the treasure chests in that room that the Doom Guards would attack. We located ourselves in the False Exit Room & used the Paws of the Cheetah to let Minsc open the chests & return to our lines. Actually we needed to use Knock spells to open the chests & then Minsc opened the chests & we got busy. Luckily, the Doom Guards didn’t all chase us out of the Deathbed Room so we were able to take them out 1 by 1. 
 
Finally, Jaheira found a massive crushing trap in a hallway between the Trophy Room & the Lever Room. We used the Paws of the Cheetah one @ a time to move quickly across the huge trap area but still suffered some serious damage in a few instances. We were stuck there & had to rest before Immy could re-memorize her Knock spell & get us through the door into the Lever Room. 
 
Treasure of Note: Kiel’s Morning Star & Buckler brought us some gold. The former would’ve been a keeper but Dy found it to be cursed. Jaheira almost kept the latter but her +1 Medium Kite Shield provides better missile protection. 
 
Current Disposition: Keeping watch in the Throne Room while the others rest.

Labyrinth Level 3

Level Up: I’m up to Superhero (Fighter-Wizard Slayer/8); Jaheira was promoted to Initiate of the 6th Circle (Druid/8) to go along w/her multi-class Champion (Fighter/7) status. She elcted to add Cure Medium Wounds & Defensive Harmony to add to her divine spells. Later, Khalid, also, was promoted to Superhero (Fighter/8).

After finishing up the 2nd labyrinth level I headed back to Nashkel to rest & recuperate. Then we headed back to tackle the 3rd Labyrinth Level from the stairs we found near Kiel’s deathbed. Right off we had to contend with a circular room that has fireball after fireball exploding. After negotiating this I found myself and my followers in a strange underground Maze Garden. Here foes included 2 Ashirukuru & a handful of Greater Ghouls. Jaheira’s Find Traps spell kept us from too much trouble in that regard. 
 
Afterword we travelled down a long hallway w/elemental chambers. We fought & killed male & female Phoenix Guards in the Fire Chamber before getting into a brawl w/an Air Aspect & 2 Invisible Stalkers in the Air Chamber & Khalid was killed. I had to back my party out of the dungeon to visit Nalin in Nashkel & ask him to Raise Dead. Afterward,  I returned & we headed to the Earth Chamber where we easily defeated a Fission Slime & then up the hall to an Ice Chamber containing Kaldran the Bear and a pack of Winter Wolves. Tougher fight than I’d preferred, especially when I got HELD & had to take blast after blast of Ice Breath from Kaldran. Finally my followers finished him & the Winter Wolves. Just then we were teleported to a Chess Board. An invisible narrator laid out the rules of this game of Chess we were expected to participate in. Problem was I was still HELD. No one moved & nothing happened. We couldn’t see the enemy Chess pieces. Immy cast a Greater Malison to affect the center of the opposing line that we still couldn’t see.  Dy followed w/a Wand of Fire to great effect as we heard and smelled the effect of the crushing fire. Still no movement our way. Jaheira followed w/a Dispel Magic in the vicinity & Dy fired off Wand of Fire Blasts 3 or 4 more times. I’d collected myself & healed a bit by then & moved forward. The enemy King & Queen & all their allies were dead. Game over!
 
Key Event: From the Chess Board we headed downstairs where we ran into an apparition of Durlag offering advice. From there we moved forward, now on the 4th Labyrinth Level staying to the left as always even though we uncovered a secret passage to the right. We found a second apparition, this one claiming to be Islanne & offering us escape from DsT if we chose. We elected to stay awhile & ended up in battle w/2 Helmeted-Horrors. Key about this was that after we killed the 1st one, Imoen suddenly felt the rush of new power that comes w/advancing as a Mage. Not only did we NOW have 2 8th Level Mages but, more importantly, suddenly Immy had regained her thieving skills too. We headed back down the hall & explored some caverns for a bit before electing to return to Islanne & accept her offer to exit DsT for some time in Nashkel. We needed to adjust our spell repertoire to account for Immy’s thieving skills having returned.

I returned to the 4th Labyrinth Level of DsT, setting my sites on completing adventures in the caverns. The place was swarming w/Greater Ghouls, Ghasts and Crypt Crawlers. W/Imoen’s thieving skills available we were much more confident & worked our way thru quickly. We had one major battle w/a Greater Ghoul named Grael who was accompanied by a Crypt Crawler & 2 Greater Ghouls. This was a vicious fight in which Minsc fell & nearly the entire party w/him. We returned to Nalin in Nashkel to Raise Dead on Minsc before returning to continue.

Upon return, we worked our way thru halls slowly eliminating traps & making headway. We continued battling Greater Ghouls & found a room full of Spiders & Ghasts that we cleared. From there we found a token machine that we had a wardstone to fit. We found a huge storeroom w/two treasure chests & we loaded up on some good loot but not w/o getting blasted w/a Lightning trap that Imoen didn’t detect. From there we were able to complete our adventures opening a chest in another storeroom off the caverns and, finally, a throne room which was also full of treasure. We took all that back to High Hedge and did some trading w/Thalantyr before returning.

Key Event: Durlag’s Ghost complimented me and led us to a secret room. There we met an adventurer, Clair, whose party had just been wiped out by a Demon Knight ‘beyond the door.’ Hearing Clair’s warning we prepared thoroughly for what we would find there. Using Potions of Invisibility we spread out around a round room looking down of the Demon Knight. Dy fired off a Spell Thrust, Immy a Dispel Magic & Jaheira Summon Insects. Khalid shot an Arrow of Dispelling while Minsc fired his bow also. Khalid switched to Arrows of Piercing while Dy fired off a Minor Sequencer w/back to back Magic Missiles & Immy fired a MM also. I moved in for melee now but the demon Knight blasted Minsc w/a massive Fireball and then moved to attack him in his stunned condition. He killed Minsc quickly. I caught up to him and started beating him like a rag doll. Khalid kept up the Arrows of Piercing. Jaheira cast Doom while Dy and Immy cast Melf’s Acid Arrow @ the Demon Knight. Finally one ofmy word blows brought him to his knees and & I cut his head off.

End of the line to a great, great PC run!!! 
 
Once again, my party has been decimated. No way to justify reloading as there would be anyone left to raise anyone.   I’d feel like I was breaking my own rules if I took a mulligan here. 
 
I’d already suffered a 5th reload against the Cult but everyone else made it so it was feasible to raise my PC.

Running out of options!

Key Event: Behmen tried to go in and rescue his party so he could take articles of their equipment to use in raising them. Sadly, although he had Aec’Letec ‘Near Death’ he wasn’t able to finish him. Since there were still some Cult Guards remaining it may have been academic anyway as I believe Aec’Letec just moves to another host if the first is killed and any Cult Guards remain. Since my PC was the last alive and bought the farm in the Cult basement, chances are no passerby would be along anytime soon to raise them. Need a better strategy against the Cult – the Cloudkill instakill doesn’t seem to work anymore. REALLY disappointed. Was looking forward to playing Behmen in BGII. Darn!

*Note: I actually restarted this PC after his death in the NRC but he didn’t last long enough to post again over there. So here he is, same story for the PC, but running the MRC instead. CKT
 
I’ve been busy since last I had time to pull out quill & parchment & journal. Suffice to say that things have changed in the 35 days since I left Candlekeep w/Gorion @ my side.
 
I’ve made it to Nashkel but have required the services of Gellana @ the Temple of the Wisdom near the FAI & Kelddath @ the Temple of the Morning near Beregost. 
 
However, my followers have become stronger and more plentiful since just Immy & I started & later added Khalid & Jaheira. Since then we added an Elven Ranger/Archer named Kivan that we met near a Wizards Manor House in High Hedge west of Beregost.  Kivan suggested we link up w/another Elven friend of his, Coran, who he said we’d find in the Cloakwood. Sure enough we found him after great trial to avoid a pack of Dread Wolves & Wolves as well as a number of Huge Spiders. We finally skirted them by going N & found Coran. Great call by Kivan. 
 
Now my followers amount to 2 Ranger/Archers and a Fighter/Thief-Swashbuckler, all 3 of whom are deadly w/a Long Bow. Jaheira has been providing great Druidic support & is quite effective w/her sling & stones. And…Imoen is growing in strength & skill as a Swashbuckler herself & her SBow is quite helpful in backing up the LBows…but I can’t risk losing her much longer. Kivan & Coran indicate they have another Elf friend who had gone to the Nashkel Mines & they are urging me to find him & add his Mage skills to our weapons. We’re heading toward the mines tomorrow. Once we find Xan, I think I’m going to release Immy from my service. I think she will be safe @ the FAI until I can sort this all out. 
 
Key Event:Once I had my current party together we cleared everything from the FAI to Nashkel, to include all the lands around Coast & Lion’s Way, South Beregost Road & North Nashkel Road. When we arrived in Nashkel I was again attacked by an Assassin, this one calling herself Neira. She was able to cast a Hold Spell on me but before she could do any further damage, she was riddled w/arrows.  Securing the services of Coran & Kivan’s bows to add to Khalid’s has made us a deadly group of adventurer’s to approach. We are able to set a kill-sack that is almost unreachable on foot.

Key Event:My mission to find Xan & add his wizard skills to our team has ended in tragedy. Kivan & Coran insisted that their fellow Elf would be an asset & I’m sure their council will bear them out. Still, in finding Xan, which we did, I have lost my oldest and best friend, my little sister really, Imoen. Imoen was slain by a Kobold or Skeleton, I don’t know which, while we battled the evil Cleric Mulahey who, from deep in the Nashkel Mines, was overseeing an operation to slow the flow of iron from that mine and spoil whatever iron did emerge from within. 
 
We’d made quick work of the mines, Khalid, Kivan & Coran tearing up Kobolds w/their relentless arrows, so the final confrontation w/Mulahey seemed an afterthought. And for all purposes it was, except that he managed first to use a Sleep spell on me & then, almost as soon as I awoke from my slumber, he cast Hold Person, on me. My party immediately came to my aid as I was defenseless, Imoen leading the charge, her new Short sword in hand. Even Held I saw her fall out of the corner of my eye. Still, it was only a short time later that we’d defeated Mulahey & his minions. But my celebration was short lived. We released Xan from captivity & I readily accepted his offer of service, despite his dour personality. But…on doing so I realized my mistake…there was nothing I could do for Immy anymore. I’d hoped to send her back to the FAI to wait on me to clear the way w/o risking her safety but she needed to be alive for me to do that. I failed her miserably. When all this is over, I will recover her and Gorion’s remains & properly lay them to rest.

You know, I'd thought about resting before we entered this cave but thought better of it.  Hmm.  At what cost?

Our return to Nashkel, my party, beaten & bruised, took one on the kisser again. Another assassin, this one named Nimbel, put a whoopin’ on us. Xan had no spells memorized coming directly from captivity & the rest of us were scarred up. Nimbel approached us and threatened us and we separated into our ‘spider spoke’ formation placing Nimbel @ the center. He’d cast Mirror Image on himself & I suspect, Protection from Normal Missiles. Suffice to say we couldn’t lay a glove on him. At one point,  Kivan & I were licking our wounds w/Khalid, Coran, Jaheira and Xan all dead. The only attacks on him were coming from Amnish Soldiers who were actually keeping him busy & wounding him. Kivan & I finally slipped into the Temple of Helm & purchased Cure spells & then ran Nimbel down in the Nashkel Inn. There we finally cut him to shreds. I had to sell much of what we gained in the Nashkel Mines to raise my followers but was unable to help Immy.

I led my group, now consisting of 2 Half-Elves & 3 Elves, to Beregost to confront Tranzig. He was ready for us & confronted us as we got to the top of the stairs. He Mirror Imaged himself & proceeded to cast Slow on all but me & Blindness on Kivan. We countered w/Xan pelting him twice w/Melf’s Acid Arrow while Jaheira cast Bless on our party & then Doom on Tranzig who’d now cast Hold Person on Kivan to add insult to injury. I was finally able direct my ‘Slowed’ companion Khalidand Xanto either side of the doorway so I could attack dual-wielding my Battle-Axes. Xan won the day w/a Scroll of Chromatic Orb as Tranzig was panicking & running toward the stairs.
 
I led the party to Larswood and proceeded to tear the eyes out of Teven’s Bandits. All was well and we were loaded up w/treasure from that victory.

For my part, not an excuse, just an observation. SCS makes the game much tougher for my skill level. Even w/o adding any of the Tactical Challenges I still find the game much harder in encounter after encounter and I'm gonna have to adjust to it. As I say, I skipped the Tactical Challenges but still made mages and clerics smarter, added better calls for help, better deployments etc. I also find that, where I might have fought four skeletons w/throwing daggers outside High Hedge, now there are ~ 20. Same w/Kobold encounters. I gave myself a break and made more realistic wolves and wild dogs (less Likely to attack) but then added in faster bears. Oh well, I'll adjust but that last encounter w/the BTE, which are always hard anyway, was a booger. I thought I had a formidable party & got smoked like a cheap cigar. CT

I left Candlekeep w/Gorion & we were ambushed in the darkness of Lion’s Way only hours after we left. Gorion was cut down by some dark, armored fiendish figure, 2 Ogre’s & what appeared to be female Cleric type. Gorion ordered me to run & I instinctively obeyed to my dismay. From where I stood, I saw Gorion killed.
 
I waited till morning & tried to get my bearings when Imoen approached me. She’d followed us @ a distance & joined w/me, despite my reservations. We collected Gorion’s belongings before battling a pack of Gibberling’s which we defeated well together. We passed up a chance to join w/2 adventurers who wanted to go to Nashkel but Imoen was uneasy about having them join us & I deferred to her sixth sense. In hindsight, that may have been a mistake. 
 
Later, in the Coast Way, we met a strange gentleman who appeared to be a Mage but he was friendly enough & directed us to the Friendly Arm Inn (FAI), where Gorion had admonished me to go to meet up w/2 people named Khalid & Jaheira if anything should separate us. We left the elderly gentleman & were once again attacked by a pack of Gibberling’s but, once again, Immy & I did well together. We continued N & finally made it to the FAI.
 
Key Event:Immy & I couldn’t get past a wizard, Tarnesh, on the steps of the FAI & we both took a beating. He cast a Sleep spell & we were easy pickin’s for his staff & a Magic Missile spell. 
 
We were lucky, b/c Khalid & Jaheira had been waiting for me & when they heard the commotion they took us to Gellana, the Priestess, in the Temple of Wisdom, who raised us for a donation of 500gp. They had to sell Imoen’s Wand of Magic Missiles to pay Gellana’s fee. 

Tarnesh tried to act unassuming around the Inn after Khalid & Jaheira had us raised.  He wouldn’t come right out & attack again inside but he was restless & we knew he was up to something, he was always watching us. The four of us planned ahead when we were upstairs in the common room, fully expecting Tarnesh to try & attack us again when he deemed his opportunity best.  Sure enough, when we emerged from the FAI to head toward Nashkel, he was waiting to strike. I swung my dual-axes while Immy, Khalid & Jaheira attacked w/ranged weapons. Sure enough, Tarnesh cast Sleep again but even as it dropped all 4 of us in our tracks, my axe split Tarnesh’s shoulder through to his chest, killing him instantly.

When we awoke the guards had moved everyone away. It was well known that Tarnesh was the aggressor & Bentley had no ill-will toward us for the event.
