First Update of the Day. Probably the last one before the Final Battle.

The group talked to many people in Candlekeep. They got arrested. Had to fight their way through some catacombs filled with dopplegangers, and had a bit of foreshadowing.

A quick update.  After a few days away from the computer our hero, Stanley II, and his party left the security of the Nashkel Inn and headed south for the four or so hour trip to the Nashkel MInes.

After completing their reconnaissance of the area surrounding the mines the party headed into the mouth of the beast after securing the permission of Emerson, the mines foreman.  An Aminsh soldier we met outside the mines thought Emerson might give us a hassle, but far from it, he seemed eager for all the help he could get.

With the exception of a Kobold or two the first level of the mine was uneventful.  We did pick up a dagger that one of the miners hoped we could get to a friend of his named Kylee who worked deeper in the mines.

Moving un-phased into the second level of the mine we encountered a miner who was terrified of some "yipping demons" that were chasing him.  Sadly, we did not move quickly enough to save him from his demons; actually four more nasty Kobolds.

Afterword, we came upon a storage cave where a number of mine tracks came together and coal trucks and barrels were stored. The Aminsh guards had also created a makeshift armory here.  Here we found Kylee and were glad to return his dagger to him for the peace of mind it might provide.  We chatted a bit with the Aminsh guards who, true to form, all appear on edge.
The big event on the second level occurred in the hall that leads to what we think is the next level.  We ran into 10, maybe twelve, Kobolds.  This took some effort as there were more than a handful to deal with but they all eventually assumed the prone, lifeless position we prefer.  We did find two strange vials of liquid on them in addition to some minor loot.  The vials were similar to some antidote vials we got from Landrin when we were at the Friendly Arm Inn a couple of weeks ago but both Dynahier and Jaheira agree that they aren’t the same thing.
D & J provide most of our "lore" expretise.

Afterword we decided to take a day or two and head back to Nashkel, mainly to cash in the loot we have and pick up some additional healing potions from the Temple of Helm.

As is becoming custom, we are gathered around our favorite table in the Nashkel Inn bonding as a party.  As an aside, Dynahier seems interested in me in more than just a professional way.  I’m trying to be nice without slamming her or leading her on but the dialogue options don’t help (lol).

We’ll head back to the mines shortly and see just how deep they go.

When we do so, with 0 reloads, we’ll be:

Stanley II, Cavalier, Lvl 2, Long Sword/Mace/Sword & Style **

Minsc, Barbarian, Lvl 2, 2-Handed Sword/2-Handed Weapon Style** (Primary Script: Spellcaster Defend)

Imoen, Swashbuckler, Lvl 3, Short Sword/Short Bow (Primary Script: Ranged)

Khalid, Bounty Hunter, Lvl 3, Bastard Sword/Long Bow (Primary Script: Ranged) – Sadly, Khalid told me the reason he uses a bastard sword is because HE himself is a bastard. Image IPB

Jaheira, Druid, Lvl 2, Sling/Club (Primary Script: Druid Off/Def)

Dynahier, Invoker, Lvl 1, Sling (Primary Script: Wizard Defensive)

Note:  I’ve uploaded my screen shots to Image Shack but still haven’t figured out how to get them here for all to see.  Feeling mighty dumb.

You use this command

{img}link{/img}

Except you replace 'link' with the direct link to where the image is hosted, and use square brackets i.e '[' and ']' rather than the curly ones.

What sucks is you can edit a goofed up post but you can't delete it and start again so as to avoid embarrassing yourself.

Forgot the word img at the start and at the end and they have to be surrounded by [] []. So, in total you should have two of each [] to surround both img. Hopefully that helped!

Our heroes, Stanley II and crew headed south again intent on getting a little more work done in the Nashkel Mines.

Going back to where we left off we found that indeed the descent we found on level 2 led to a third level as we presumed.

Things got a little sportier as we found our first traps.  Imoen really has the trap thing down.  Unfortunately, a few moments after she’d found a couple  I rushed into combat against some more darned Kobolds and tripped on a couple of 'toe poppers' back to back.  Darn that hurt!

Then, just as we found another descent which we presume to be to yet another level below us, I stepped too far, too fast and took more damage from a trap.  Thankfully, I stopped to assess my damage because Imoen found two more traps just beyond that which I would have hit had I kept walking.

We just about cleared the 3rd level, including a ghoul and a couple of spiders when we ran into about twenty Kobolds.  Unfortunately, Minsc was overwhelmed and succumbed to his wounds.  We finished ‘em up, collected the loot and Minsc’s equipment and headed back to Nashkel to request the services of the Temple of Helm to raise him back to us – which the Priest Nalin gladly did for 200 gp.

Afterword, we headed back to the Inn to rest up Minsc and share a few stories over adult beverages. Minsc appears to be fine as he drank his fill – both he and Jaheira were obviously intoxicated.

Dynahier continues to pursue my affections, coyly. Unfortunately, others are noticing and it’s becoming uncomfortable.  I’m going to have to make myself clear that there is no interest on my part aside from professional adventurers and friends.

One correction from my previous entry.  Dynahier is a 2nd level  Invoker.

Leaders notes:

1)  I’ve got to do a better job of party control during melee.  Minsc should never have gotten that far down before I yanked him from the fight.  That ones on me as the leader.  I’d never forgive myself if Minsc were “chunked” and I was unable to recover enough of him for any priest in Faerun to be able to bring him back.

2) I’ve got to slow the party down and allow Imoen and Khalid to do their jobs and detect for traps.  Using spells and potions to heal wounds that could have been prevented with appropriate caution is a waste of resources.  Worse, there are bound to be more lethal traps elsewhere.  Once again, I don’t want to lose a party member because of my lack of caution as a leader.

Next Up:  Back to the mines to see what’s down that shaft.

This is the code that I am cutting directly and pasting with the bookends.  Is there something I should be "cutting" off of the code or should it be just as is here?

You need the backslash in the pair of square brackets at the end (so it's /img).

If that doesn't work, then I would just make an account on photobucket, because you can just click on what type of link you want, and paste it.

Edit: I think you got it on the second link, because I can see your Paladin's character sheet when I click on the link.

Edit2: And its messed up again. :(

Edit3: WOOHOO! And your golden on your post!

We headed back to the Nashkel Mines and preceded through the previously cleared three levels and descended into yet a fourth level.
Here we ran into a few more pesky Kobolds, a couple of them were Kobold Commando’s.  Darn things have Short Bows with arrows of fire.  The short bows are nothing new but the fire tipped arrows make things a little trickier.  In the end though, we took ‘em out with some effort.
We also bagged a ghoul and a couple of Gray Oozes.
Finally we found the mother lode.  Inside a cave we ran into a three or four Kobolds, dusted them off and then ran into a self proclaimed “master of the mystical arts.”  This chap asked to join us but I didn’t have a good feeling about his abilities and decided against it.
A few moments later we headed into an inner cave and ran into a Half-Orc who promptly let us know we weren’t welcome by summoning about 20 Kobolds and animated skeletons to attack us.  Minsc worked him over while I kept the Kobolds and skeletons away from the other, more lightly armored party members who concentrated on providing ranged fire and spell support.  We won that battle too, with difficulty.
A treasure chest contained letter identifying the Half-Orc as being named Mulahey and points us to a guy named Tranzig who should be found at the Feldepost’s Inn.  The chest also contained almost 800 GPs; some useful spells, including what turned out to be an Identify Spell and some items that later turned out to be Gauntlets of  Weapon Expertise. There were also Boots of Grounding and a Ring of Holiness which we gladly gave to Jaheira to boost her spell capacity.
We left through an ascending tunnel that led into a valley.  As we stepped out into the sunshine the tunnel collapsed behind us.  Too close.
Then I took my own trip into the valley of shadow.  We returned to Nashkel to plan our next steps and were attacked by an assassin we later determined to be named Nimbul by a scroll he was carrying.  In the course of finally taking him out I took one too many magic missiles and crossed over.  Thankfully my fellow party-members appreciate me as much as I do them.  I awoke in the Temple of Helm with Nalin standing over me.  He told me I would be weak for awhile and would need to rest. I thanked him, and all of my party, and we went back to the inn to recuperate.
I took a scolding from everyone around “our table” about being as concerned about my own welfare as am about each of theirs.  Lesson noted - it costs $200 GP too many to get killed.  Just stay alive from now on.
Nimbul's equipment yielded Boots of Avoidance - I'm donning them and the Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise.
Next Steps:  I want us to head up to Beregost and find out what this Tranzig knows.  Also, I am interested in what’s in that valley we found we came out of the mines.  Still deciding.

We decided to head to Beregost while the trail on Tranzig was still hot.  Before leaving we checked in with Barrun Ghastkill. We showed him the ore samples and the mysterious vial we found in the mines. He suggested we show the ore to Taerom Fuiruim at the Thunder Hammer and the vial to a sage named Thalantyr in High Hedge west of Beregost.
We headed north with plenty to accomplish and a 900GP reward in our pouches.
When we arrived it was after dark so we went directly to Feldepost’s Inn to confront Tranzig.  He was hostile from the outset but we did get him to say that when he met with Tazok it was usually in Larswood or Peldvale.  He went down easy enough but yielded only about 90GP and a scroll from Tazok (darn that “Hard-Times” mod)!
We got out of there and after resting at the Burning Wizard headed to the Thunder Hammer to meet with Fuiruim.  On the way a little girl approached us and told us an Officer Vai of the Flaming Fist was looking for us and could be found at the Jovial Juggler.
We headed on to the smithy and Fuiruim told us he’d need a few days to check out the ore. Then we headed west to High Hedge to find this wizard, Thalantyr. On the way we met an interesting chap named Kivan who was hunting bandits. He offered to join me and his bow would be and real multiplier but I think six is about the right size for our purposes so I hesitantly declined. (see note below)
Easily endured a short melee with some skeletons armed with warhammers, darts and bucklers.
We met with Thalantyr and he thought he might be able to work a solution for the compound that was damaging the iron.  We left him to his work but not before we bought about 2000GP worth of new spells for Dynahier to add to her spell book.
I'd like to come back here later and explore this area more thoroughly.

We're down to just north of 1000GP now so we'll have to be careful...especially since we're starting to opt for the more expensive 'merchant rooms' at inns now.
Back in Beregost we headed to the Juggler and met with Officer Vai.  She and her company of soldiers from the Flaming Fist are cut off from Baldur’s Gate and she’s asked for our help in decreasing the Bandit population at 50GP a scalp.  That we can do.
We departed there and headed back to check out that valley we emerged into when we left the Nashkel mines.  Turns out the place is called the Valley of the Tombs.
Here we fought a few more skeletons and sacked a tomb with a Ghoul in it before some guy ran up to us breathlessly begging us to take a dagger that he’d stolen and return it to its rightful owner. Evidently he raided a tomb and has brought a curse of some kind down on him by stealing the dagger.  He said we’d find the owner in a tomb to the east.  We found the tomb and a hideous, pathetic undead creature begging for the dagger. At Dynahier’s suggestion we returned the dagger and the creature instantly died.  His sarcophogis contained a few GPs and a couple of potions which Dynahier later determined to be Invisibility and Freedom. Unfortunately the potion of freedom was wasted.
Leaving there, we proceeded to continue adventuring the area around the tombs until we ran into a group of amazon assassin women.  Toughest battle yet!  We got one of them right off but Minsc also fell.  I was ‘held’ for what seemed hours right in the midst of them and they started pummeling me.  Thankfully Jaheira, Imoen and Khalid had the presense of mind to rush the three remaining assassins and tie them up in melee so that they couldn’t hack me to pieces. Dynahier stood afar and hurled spells, and then, stones at them.  Eventually Imoen, then Jaheira, defeated their opponents but Khalid fell to his. With only one remaining assassin, and me finally free, we were able to kill the last of them but it was difficult.   We gathered Minsc and Khalid’s gear and the loot and headed, exhausted back to Nashkel and yet another visit to Nalin to raise our fallen.  Our ‘donation’ fee has gone up for this service – now 400GP each, so we were out 800GP.  That’s tough in this ‘hard-times’ economy.
Afterword, we went through the loot.  About 250GPs; potions of Hill Giant Strength, Magic Blocking, Power, Stoneform; two suits of Splint Mail and magical leather armor (+1).  All in all a good haul but darn these ‘hard-times!’
Leader Notes:  Still need to be more cautious in combat – more cautious everywhere!  If we don’t an irreversible mistake that no priest will be able to help with is just a matter of time.  That’s my job as the leader of this group.
Next Steps: Back to finish exploring the Valley of the Tombs. Not sure from there.  I feel the need to go after these bandits and stay hot on the trail of this iron shortage conspiracy but at the same time, this party needs some training in melee combat to sharpen our skills. I’m afraid the bandit trail might be a little more difficult that we’re ready for.  OH, and find that hot Elf Kalyinara that keeps running thru my dreams - how she has a 9 Charisma I'll never know - she must be a ----- lol.
Note(s): actually I saved a version where I accepted Kivan into the party and sent Khalid, and by default Jaheira, back to the FAI to await further instructions.

Her Charisma would have been higher if I thought she needed it. lol. I'm reading your narrative-style story. (Ironically, I just learned about Narrative Essays yesterday for my English Composition class.) Despite the fact that I'm in the middle of a BG2 run.

After resting, we armed and equipped ourselves to head back and “mop up” the Valley of the Tombs.  Fat chance.  We ran into some mage in the wilderness who was working on s spell he said would allow him to control slimes and jellies and the like. I told him it wasn’t a good idea so he showed me – and he goofed it up.  Next thing we know he’s running scared and we’re up to our elbows in “Green Slimes”. Which should have been easy, right? We were putting the last one to rest when out of nowhere I took a critical hit.  I’d had a couple of minor wounds from an earlier scuffle with some Flinds but this slime 'slimed' me just enough to send me into oblivion. So…once again I found myself coming out of a haze staring up at Nalin in the Temple of Helm.
After getting healed and rested, we headed back and finished up the slimes and raided a tomb full of Ghasts.  Nasty things those are.  Almost lost Minsc again but we prevailed. Fighting these things makes me envy my fellow Paladin Undead Hunters.
Next we headed back to town and decided we all needed some rest and relaxation.  We decided to take in the Nashkel Carnival and enjoyed ourselves for a while. Even there we found the outskirts crawling with Kobolds and did our best to exterminate the threat so that no visitors would be harmed. While there we ran into a gnome that was selling a Scroll of Stone to Flesh that we could buy to release a “maiden” encased in stone.  We all got a good laugh when Jaheira thumped the Gnome over the head and took the scroll from the runt.  We released her and she turned out to be a Priestess of Helm (Level 1 NPC Mod) who offered her services but I continue to be happy with the group we have so I politely declined. (See note)
Back to the mission at hand we’re headed toward Larswood and Peldvale to follow up on what we learned from the scroll will found in Tranzig’s belongings.  Between this and Officer Vai I’m seeing this bandit thing and the iron crisis as one big “something” that I want to figure out.  So we’re going after it.
We started by heading to finish searching the North Nashkel and South Beregost Roads since we only passed through them initially when we were putting our party together.  As with “mopping up” the Valley of the Tombs this expedition didn’t turn out to be easy either.  With only one magic weapon in the party, Imoen’s Short Sword +1 (another effect of the Hard Times Mod), fighting a Vampiric Wolf is just a really stupid idea. So we did.  I took Imoen’s Sword, quaffed a potion of Frost Giant Strength and even though I didn’t have proficiency with a short sword I figured I’d go toe to toe with him.  Dumb! Immediately he bit me; I got ‘Held’ and shortly afterward I was layin’ prostrate on Nalin’s ‘raising table’ opening my eyes from the haze of death.  Aside from that, both the NNR and the SBR were uneventful. We fought off a number of Hobgoblins, Kobolds, Xvarts, wolves etc but nothing difficult. We did find a pair of what turned out to be Boots of Speed on one of the Hobgoblins but returned them to Zurlong in the Burning Wizard in Beregost – he’d told us about them on one of our trips through so being the Paladin that I  am…
We took care of a few things in Beregost after that.  We found out Firebead Elvenhair lived there so we visited him and helped him procure a book he’d been looking for.  We also managed to clean those Spider’s out of Landrin’s home near the Juggler. We’ll have to take her possessions to her soon so she can get home.  We ran into a Bard named Garrick outside our Inn and he offered gold for protecting ‘Lady Silke’, some performer he was employed by. Turns out she was trying to dupe us into killing some innocent men and we ended up killing her instead. That landed us 400GP, a Potion of Heroism and a magical staff.  That might’a helped if we’d had that to fight that Vampiric Wolf with.  True to form lately, Garrick tried to latch on with us but we’ve definitely no use for him in our limited company. And, as with everywhere I go these days, I’m dealing with assassins.  Entering the Red Sheaf led us into another assassination attempt by an ax- wielding Dwarf but we’d hardly deployed into combat formation before I brought my Long Sword down between his ears and split his head.
Headed from there to clean up the Coast Way.  Here we found that Girdle of Piercing Unshey at the FAI had mentioned when we chatted with her the first time we stayed there. Unfortunately an Ogre had it with him and took exception to our taking it from him but we managed to do so leaving with only a few bumps and bruises for our trouble.  He also had with him, get this, a Girdle of Masculinity/Femininity – oh how funny it would be to give that to Minsc.  But I dare not risk the a -- kickin’ I’d get when he finally got it off of him.  Anyway, we’re headed back to the FAI next to get Unshey and Landrin’s items back to them.  It’s feels good to be able to help folks out.
Just as we moved away from the ogre we ran into a hornets’ nest of bandits.  Must have been ten or more.  We whooped ‘em good and took the scalps for Vai as well as a number of long swords and long bows and a handful of GPs.
Leader Notes:  We have to stay alive.  That means healing ourselves fully after a battle.  There’s too much chance for that one “critical hit” that, combined with other minor wounds can send one of us, me included, into oblivion.  Doing this means having the patience to return to town, if need be, to make sure we are always in top fighting shape and have ample Potions of Healing in our pouches.
Also, I HAVE got to be smart.  If a battle is too much for us I’ve got to swallow my pride, be patient and come back to it when it’s more favorable to us. That means holding minsc back as hard as it is.
Next Steps: Headed back to FAI.  Need to secure that area and then it’s over the Larswood and Peldvale to do some Bandit hunting – find out where all of this is leading.  This is getting interesting.
Note(s): As with Kivan, I saved a version in which I accepted Branwen once again, sending Khalid and Jaheira to the FAI. I may decide to use it one day.

After finishing up the Coast Way we decided to head north to the FAI and rest a bit while securing that all important cross-road between Amn and Baldur’s Gate.  We returned Landrin’s items and Unshey’s Girdle, sold some loot and rested a bit.
Key Event:   In this endeavor we ran across a resident named Joia who told us that there were Hobgoblins (I like to call ‘em Orecai) within sight of the FAI.  She told us that they’d stolen a Flamedance Ring from her and that she’d like it back.  She was correct.  There was a group of six or eight of them west and north of the Inn just off the road.  We made quick work of them and sure enough we were able to recover her ring and get it back to her. Guessing these Orecai are part of the Chill so we’re still on the trail of this thing – whatever it is.  I feel good about having rid the area around the Inn of such evil and making the roads safer for travel and commerce.

Alrighty, made my new character, Akiel!

Same mods as before, and same difficulty, except for Improved BAMs, Some parts of D0Tweaks, and aTweaks.

Image IPB
Name: Akiel Blackheart (Did not include last name on character sheets.)
Race: Elf
class: Fighter/Thief
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Stats: Strength = 18/58 Dexterity = 19 Constitution = 17 Intelligence = 10 Wisdom = 10 Charisma = 10
Proficiencies: * Short Sword, and *** Two Weapon Style.

Character note: I do believe I'm going to pick up Monty, Xzar, and Viconia first since I'm going to try doing an evil run though with this guy. Monty is a Fighter/Assassin, Xzar is a Necromancer (Obviously) Except I gave him one more point in Intelligence. And Viconia is a Nightcloak of Shar (Cleric Kit fromn Divine Remix.). First evil character, and first ever attempt at doing Melee.

Note: I have a feeling Akiel might end up going good in the middle of this because for some strange reason I only like to play good characters. Heres hoping that I don't do that for the whole trilogy run. Also, all my characters have a last name. I usually just don't list them or something.

Heres a quick run down on Akiel Blackheart The name totally fits his somewhat evil persona.

Akiel completed all of Candlekeep, and got ambushed on the road by some Armored Figure. (I do believe Akiel may have a mancrush on said Armored Figure, but who knows.)
Image IPB

Up the road, Akiel met Montaron, and Xzar and let them join his group.

Then even further up the road, Akiel met Eldoth, and joined in on his extortion plot! (...Akiel you are on evil man. Note: Eldoth is a Blade...and I'm letting him use a crossbow....I feel silly.)
Image IPB

The four men headed towards the Friendly Arm Inn, except they headed north a little bit and picked up a Drow named Viconia, and let her join the group. (Oh lala. Potential love interest for Akiel later on? Also, forgot take a screenshot! D:)

Then the four men and the one woman drow went to the Friendly Arm Inn before their long trek down to Nashkel for Montaron and Xzar. That is where they met an assassin named Tarnesh, and utterly destroyed him with their swords, mace, throwing daggers, and the Minor Drain Spell.

Upon entering the Friendly Arm Inn. Akiel's group did not get a warm welcome because of Eldoth! Eldoth sang some insulting songs the last time he was there, so the group could not stock up on supplies or sleep in a room that was not...good. (Darn Eldoth. Oh, well the price you pay to be evil am I right?)

Next, the group went foward towards Beregost. They found an ogre with two belts, and kept both of them. Once in Beregost, Akiel went on a stealing spree, and stole whatever he could from every house. They went to Feldpost's Inn, and got into a bar fight with Marl and his friend. (Akiel kind of liked it.)

Then, Akiel found another bard named Garrick, and was led to Silke, where Akiel killed the men that were bothering her for 300 GP. (...Evil Akiel...Killing innocent men for money.)
Image IPB

The four men, and Viconia entered the Red Sheaf inn and found another assassin named Karlat, and killed him by using a Bless Spell, a Potion of Heroism, Eldoth's Battlesong, tons of Throwing daggers, and a Minor Drain spell. (I had to reload like twice because Akiel got one shotted.)

Lastly, the group headed down to Nashkel, and destroyed anything in their path. Including an innocent half-orc. They also killed another assassin, and talked to Berrun Ghastkill, and accepted the quest to clear out the mines.

Akiel - Fighter/Thief - 1/1
Montaron - Fighter/Assassin - 1/1
Xzar - Necromancer - 1
Eldoth - Blade - 2
Viconia - Nightcloak of Shar - 2

Reloads: 2

Note: I need to find another evil character, or get to Chapter 5 quickly so then I can go pick up Skie.

@sapphireice - Your party looks a little weak in the "tank" department - I would pick up Kagain - he's evil and in Beregost (in a house a little bit north of the inn you find Tranzig)
