@sapphireice - Your party looks a little weak in the "tank" department - I would pick up Kagain - he's evil and in Beregost (in a house a little bit north of the inn you find Tranzig)

Thank you! I was trying to look for him, but I couldn't find him.

No problem. This house is those ones where you don't see a door, you have to mouse over it till the cursor changes to the door icon.

Thanks again! I found him, and now I have a proper tank. Instead of two dual weilding Fighter/Thief characters trying to be tanks.

Larswood
Twice bitten!  Larswood should have been just a check of the old block.  Started out well enough as we handled a group of bandits with relative ease and then moved south and swatted a multitude of Xvarts near an abandoned tower and ruins.  Easy enough.  Just a few wolves besides and we were moving along at a good clip.  Just as we were heading back toward the FAI we came across a couple of Black Talon Elites armed with Arrows of Ice but were able to defeat them.  But in between...
Key Event:   We approached an obvious druid compound from the south and one of them mistakenly identified us as bandits and attacked.  He was joined by two big brown bears.  Minsc, Dynahier and I all fell.  Luckily the remaining members were able to extricate us and get us to the temple at the FAI where the Priestess Gellana was able to raise the three of us for a cool 1800GP.  Unfortunately, we didn’t fare any better on our second effort either and were out another 600GP and in debt for another 600GP when next we return.  I returned to the ranks of the living for a second time in a few days and we headed back over to the compound a third time.  We finally approached the druids from the east and were able to dispatch them without bears whacking at us at the same time.
Leader Notes:  What to say?  As a Paladin I charge into battle without fear.  This leaves me vulnerable to spells that incapacitate me and leave me helpless and useless to my party.  To make matters worse, Minsc is always there right at my side, if not in front of me.  If he’s incapacitated also we have no “tanks”, just light artillery which is great in a support role but as the main effort.  Got to think on this.
Next Steps:  Peldvale
Note(s):  There’s nothing worse in Baldur’s Gate than when you’re PC is held or otherwise incapacitated and is just standing there helplessly getting pummeled.  You just keep hoping the effects will wear off and you can do SOMETHING! ANYTHING!  Normally I approach these druids from the west. This time I came from the south and this brought the bears into the melee from the outset.  Not good.   Posted Image

Saphire, Minimal reload rule question - since we seem to be the only ones playing. If your PC is killed and requires raising and then you go back to the scene of the crime to "fight another day" do you have problems approaching from another direction? In the past, as above, I did the same thing again and just tried to use better tactics - and failed.

But really, reloading assumes you've returned to a priest, been raised, and ar egoing back to kick some butt. In that case, is it reasonable to assume you "know they're there" and therefore, can attack from a differrent direction.

Just wondered how you felt about that?

@CKT: There are several things you can do to increase your "survivability":
1) Use thiefs/rangers to scout (note rangers have to wear leather to scout) with stealth ability. When they find a casting enemy, back off and fire off a area effect if you have any (like fireball wand, wand of fear etc.). These will make a difference.
2) Use potions, such as potion of magic blocking or freedom of action (defense against holds) when needed.
3) Divine casters can cast "chant" and "bless" both which increase attack rolls AND save rolls - which means you are more likely to shrug off the hold spell.
4) Have cleric cast silence on casters so they can't cast anything and be forced to use their melee
5) Have you ranged characters get their Thac0 as good as you can so they are more likely to interrupt casters. Use wand of magic missiles since it never misses. (example about Thac0 - if your thief/mage are using a weapon they are not proficient in they will hit much less than if they are proficient)
EDIT: 6) Forgot to mention the hold spell reads holds "1D4 creaters in a small area". This means if you and Minsc attack from different vectors to give some iniital seperation then they can't hold you both with one spell
7) If a battle is too dangerous don't send your PC in front! Have Minsc go by himself and you assist with ranged, you could always be "backup" in case Minsc fails, or assist once you have silenced/killed enemy casters.

Some great feedback CR.

   - Funny I use a tank and a Thief to scout for traps and bad guys in dungeons but not outside.

   - And I never know what to do with those Magic blocking potions - they're going on the Girdle from now on.

   - I do use Bless and Chant etc when possible but at this level there aren't many of them in Jaheira's memory bank.  And, since I don't have a "real" Cleric I don't have the "Silence" spell.

   - I really like the "different vectors" advise too.  Using the "scouting", differing vectors and area affect attacks from range should increase our survivability.

These are all things I do at times - just not consistantly.

Thanks again C_R.

@CKT - Thats actually a good question. I usually don't think anything of it as I would prefer -not- to die since this is an Evil Character, and raising up Rep is bad for him, and his evil awesomeness. Akiel is also a learning curb for me because I prefer to play caster/ranged types.

In my opinion, it is kind of reasonable to say that the group knows what is where if said character dies, and tries to attack it from a different angle, and use other strategies and such.

@CKT: You have monster summoning wand (you find it in the Valley of Tombs area). If you sell it and buy it back it has like 100 charges. If exploring an area you can use a charge of that and then move around, and likely as not the enemies will target your summons instead of your party. Then when the wand gets low charges again, you just sell it/buy it back and it's recharged.

@c_r: Thanks again. I really like the Wand of Monster Summoning - actually I missed it in the VotTs this time. I'm using the 'hard times' mod for the first time and when I get a wand it has like one charge. Plus, things that ar enormally "there" aren't using this one. Wonder if selling/buying a wand back would work with this HTM. Or...if I could afford it.

Stuff is so expensive using this but I'll never play without again. Very realistic.

@SI101 - good enough. I'll play it with that in mind henceforth. Wonder what happened to FlameDance.

While I have heard of the Hard Times mod, I am not familiar with its specifics so can't help you there. But you are right, buying the wand back will still likely be expensive (but worth it if you can).

@CKT - I think you mean PicklePepperPiper, and I think she, or he is in the middle of the BG2 Minimal Reload Run. Which had to forego the rule that you mentioned because...its somewhat obsolete if you have a Cleric with Raise Dead/Resurrection, or Jaheira with her Harper's Call (At least I think thats the right spell.)

Update on Mister Akiel Blackheart's adventure.

After picking up Kagain as suggested, the Akiel headed back down towards Nashkel, and went to the Carnival. Where he reaped two more deaths.
Posted Image

Then the group went back to Nashkel, and talked to Edwin, and accepted his quest to go kill a mage named Dynaheir. However, they couldn't take Edwin with them.
Posted Image

Exploring more of Nashkel, the group ran into a bounty collector and claimed to be Greywolf, and got 200GP for it. (Now we have to add Identity Theft on the list of bad things that Akiel as done.)
Posted Image

Next, the group went to the Gnoll Stronghold, found Dynaheir, and killed her! (She only gave one XP though.)
Posted Image

Lastly, the group went after Brage, and killed him for his bounty. However, the group got ripped off and only got 150GP. Akiel is now making a Mental Note of how much he hates the people from Amn.

Kagain - Fighter - 3
Montaron - Fighter/Assassin - 2/2
Xzar - Necromancer - 2
Eldoth - Blade - 3
Viconia - Nightcloak of Shar - 3

Note: I think I may do some more side questing before going into the mines.

@SapphireIce: quick note - the reason you only got 150 exp for killing Brage is that if you kill an NPC while he is BLUE, only get 10% experience. So either provoke them without killing them or let them talk to you first so you can get the full experience.

Ahh, it was 1 exp for killing Dynaheir, but it really doesn't bother me much. Hehe. Otherwise, Brage had the red circle under him, and I got full exp for him.

I also know why I got 150 GP for the Emeralds and Brage. I had Akiel impersonate Greywolf, and got his 200 GP bounty. Heh.

Where are you getting this from? I've never seen this variation with the xp given.

You have a mod that changes that touch_of_the_void? As example, when the wizard in the wizard tower (the tall, skinny, round one North part of the city of Baldur's Gate, same area the palace is), if you kill him when he's red you get 4000 exp, but if you kill him when he's blue you only get 400 exp. This is standard vanilla behavior.

@CKT - It happens! I've done that like a lot.

Quick update.

The group traveled around the countryside. Killing everything they came into contact with somewhat easily. Until they met a mad cleric by the name of Bassilius. (They took him down somewhat easily too, however, the group didn't have to deal with his undead army. So all they had to do was kill him with Magic Missile, Minor Drain, Viconia's Chakram of Shar(Due to her kit), and what other weapons that they had.)

Peldvale

General: Peldvale went more the way we’d expected Larswood to go.  We came across a couple more pairs of Black Talon Elites.  It’s good that they’re travelling in pairs because they’re a little more difficult to handle than your run of the mill bandit.  We also notched a couple of giant spiders, four war dogs, four Gibberings and two or three brown bears as well as a Drow Priestess (see note below) that was wanted by the Flaming Fist for murder.

Key Event:   The one thing we are sure of is that we are definitely on the trail of ‘something’ because, once again, we ran into a squad of bandits – about eight of them.  Their leader tried to talk us into surrendering but we were having none of it.  They went down with relative ease.  The usual loot; scalps, one suit of Splint Mail, bows, long swords, some gems, a little gold etc.

Leader Notes:  I tried using Khalid and Imoen as scouts moving ahead of the main body of the party.  Between their ability to ‘Hide in Shadows’ and “Detect Traps’ this gives the party a good screening action for advance warning.  The fact that their primary weapons are bows allows them to ‘snipe’ at any enemy’s they encounter as they retrograde back toward the main body of the group to draw the enemy into the ‘kill sac’.  Gonna keep using this tactic going forward.   Had thought about sending Minsc as part of the scouting party but he’d attack like a bull in a china cabinet as soon as he saw an enemy – kinda defeats the purpose.

Next Steps
:  Just keep following the road from Peldvale north which seems to be yielding plenty of bandits.

Note(s):  Viconia wouldn’t die! Some kind of glitch, I guess.  We pummeled her mercilessly but she just wouldn’t go down.  It made playing Peldvale tough because she just kept following us around – predominantly chasing Jaheira.  We tried to get away from her but when we were in other battles suddenly she’d come walking into the melee and attack us – again.  I have her modded in Level 1 NPCs but only to change her stats to 12/12/12/10/18/18 – not sure that would have anything to do with it but it made me play Peldvale differently than if she died up in the NW corner like she was supposed to.  Oh well.  I was thinking last night that there is some key stroke you can use to “kill” anything – it would have been appropriate there but I didn’t know what it was.
Promotions:  Khalid increased to Level 5 Bounty Hunter and maxed out in Hide in Shadows.Posted Image

@SaphireIce: Good job on Bassilus. His army can make things tough when your party gets separated.

I like you're evil party - Viconia, Xzar, Kagain - ouch - good mix! I just couldn't ever play an evil party. Something weird in me.

I'll fight Bassilus later. My plan is to go back after I follow the storyline through Candlekeep Chapter 6. Once we're "wanted" we're going to "get outta town and lay low for a while". That's when we'll go back and clean up the areas that aren't direclty connected to the storyline - including Bassilus and especially Ulgoth's Beard/Ice Island/Isle of Balduran/Durlag's Tower Saga.

Thanks, I didn't even remember where Kagain was until Corey said something. Also, somehow, Akiel, or Xzar convinced Bassilius to destroy his army or something because they were all dead once the fighting began.

Thats actually a good plan, the reason why I'm not doing something like that is becuase my find traps skill is too low on the thieves in the party. Haha.

If I ever play an evil party I will somehow find an anti-Paladin kit. I played an anti-Paladin, P&P style, way back in the 80's and I was an evil stud - played solo I was so mean. Attacked the Glacial Rift of the frost Giants alone. Alas, that was my final battle.

There's another evil thief NPC - Tiax, a Gnome - somewhere. I made both he and Montaron assassin's but in your case I guess one would need to be vanilla if you wanted the standard thief abilities - maybe a Bounty Hunter.

In the Sword and Fist Kit Mod theres a kit called Blackguard. Its an Anti-Paladin type stuck in the Fighter group. Speaking of that. My next playthrough is probably going to be with an elf named Soren with the kit of Elf Paladin. Thank you Return to Trademeet Kitpack.

Also, I don't really need Tiax, I just beat the Nashkel Mines.

Update on Akiel Blackheart. (I should have put his last name on, but then everyone else would keep referring to him by his Full Name. Soo meh.)

Akiel's group ran into Melicamp, and laughed at his plight. Then decided to take Melicamp to Thalantyr, however, Akiel decided not to help the poor foul. However, he did buy some items from Thalantyr.
Posted Image
Posted Image

After that, Akiel's group did some exploring and found some sort of succubus thing. (I had to reload once because I didn't know her kiss could kill you. Haha...Even though she did kind of force it on Akiel, so after reloading I had Xzar talk to her, and he died, then she killed Montaron next. It was horrible.)
Posted Image

After a bit more exploring the group found a hobgoblin named Ba'ruk, and killed him quite easily.
Posted Image

Next, the group ran across a dig site, and decided to "protect" Charleston, until his associate hired Akiel to kill him! However, it didn't happen, and Akiel took the Idol of Kozah, killed the Doomsayer, and ran like a little girl. (I can only imagine Akiel screeching "MY PRECIOUS!" if someone even tried to take that Idol away from him.)
Posted Image
Posted Image

Next, the group headed towards the lighthouse, and decided to help a Sirine named Sil, which they did and got a fantastic reward!
Posted Image

Next, the group did a wee bit more adventuring, and killed a half-ogre, and invaded the Ruins of Ulcaster, and killed some skeleton that wanted their flesh!
Posted Image
Posted Image

Next, Akiel decided that it was time to investigate the Nashkel Mines.
Posted Image

Then, reaching the bottom of the mines. The group came across Mulahey, and killed him. (Xzar used the wand of fireball on all the nasty group of guys. Viconia cast Silence on Mulahey, and then Xzar used the Wand of Paralyzation and froze him. Also summoned an army of Skeletons. However, Mulahey was already dead.)
Posted Image
Posted Image

After that, the group came across Xan and made him leave the mine shaft. (Thankfully, Akiel did not have the urge to kill him.)
Posted Image

Akiel reported his findings to Emerson, and then the Mayor of Nashkel, Berrun Ghastkill.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Lastly, the group came across Nimbul, and killed him. (Tried to use the Wand of Paralyzation twice, but to no avail. Just had to attack him regularly while he ran like a little girl!)
