But Mass Effect 2, a game that tries to be Gears of War but ends up just being a linear walk from one waist-high wall to the next, that lacks the RPG the box claimed was inside, and has huge consistency problems with it's story is the greatest game of the year?

Yeah, in a few years when the gaming press and gaming companies get ripped apart for anti-consumer behavior, we'll be reading about how ME2 and DA2 got the ratings they did.

First, that is purely your own opinion. Mass Effect 2's battles may be lacking in some areas (I didn't like how linear they were either) but it was still a great game with fun combat, and sure it was lacking in RPG fetures as well but does that really ruin the whole game? (Personally I thought presentation was ME2 strong suit)
Really the only main plot inconsistency comes with Arrival, but the game is still a great experience none-the-less.

As for the reviews (I didn't play DA2 nor do I care to (sci-fi>fantasy for me)) You can't just assume all reviewers are biased/bribed.

Besides a good way to get around those problems is to find groups who are either to small to be worth bribing, like private low member groups or simply ask people who have played the gams and are not members of websites like this (where groupthink changes how people actually believe) and you'll find, overwellmingly, more good reviews than bad.

"Best game ever" is subjective. "Highest rated" is not.

Don't say that! You never know what EA might make BioWare do...

On topic: ME3 is going to be even more amazing, so this time next year ME2 will have to make do with EA's second highest rated game ever.

Nice, but before anyone draws any conclusions, please bear in mind,...

Most of reviewers review games with respect to their genres, platforms, dates of release and direct competitors... Here check out Gamespot review policy rules:

So we review games against the standards of their respective platforms by implicitly comparing them to other games on that same platform and, to a lesser extent, to other games in that genre. As a result, our ratings of games on different platforms are not intended to be directly compared to one another. However, relative comparisons do apply, so a game that scores poorly is a poor game by any standards, while a game that scores extremely high is an outstanding game by any standards.

- from http://www.gamespot....view-guidelines

Hence direct comparison of scores is not usually advised. And this applies to most magazines. The best example of this policy is Super Mario Galaxy 2 with all it's 10/10 reviews and little to no Goty Awards.

That being said, Huuuray for Mass Effect!  :wizard:

I'm not trying to be a "debbie downer"  I even said I loved mass effect and its one of the best games I've ever played.

But do you honestly believe that a rating system is valid when telling the truth is grounds for punishment?

how can this game be rated so highly ?

it lacks everything that made the first game good and instead went the simple shooter route. problem is, the games not a shooter, and compared to other shooters the combat sucks. why would i play mass effect when its 90% shooting but done badly when i could play cod or gow which actually has good combat.

the game doesnt even have a story

i'd be embarrased if this was my companies highest ever rated game.

It was more maintsream which is one of the bigger reasons why it was highest rated. It was also over-hyped.

-Red Dead Redemption, the first modern Western, and the first to ever capture the wide open west feeling.

-Starcraft 2, anticipated for a decade.

We are agreed here, both of these games are incredibly astounding. But why ME2 and more importantly, ME3 will be always be slightly better than both of these games is the level of character interaction, and the fact that you can carry your shepard through these games and have the universe be reactive. The level of save import that Mass Effect is doing hasn't been before.

Also, keep in mind that GOTY awards take console games into higher account than PC exclusives because of their greater availability.

-Grand Turismo 5, the first GT on the PS3.

That's just a racing game to me, and unless they change their mold, I don't think racing simulators should ever will GOTY.

-Dead Rising 2, which broke X-box live arcade records for it's prequel.

I think Xbox Live Arcade games belong in an entire category altogether. Games like DishWasher:VS and Limbo are beautiful creative wonderful games but due to their length, depth lacking simply from production value level, they belong in another category.

But Mass Effect 2, a game that tries to be Gears of War but ends up just being a linear walk from one waist-high wall to the next, that lacks the RPG the box claimed was inside, and has huge consistency problems with it's story is the greatest game of the year?
.

And this is where it looks like you've got tunnel vision. Lets see what you sum up ME2 to be:

1. Gears of War clone

Why? because cover is essential in combat? God forbid that should be a reality. It's far better than floating guns ala Counter Strike strafing all over the place. It's not remotely realistic. Battle positioning and cover is paramount in gun warfare and as it should be, it is of high importance in ME2. It's far more challenging and fun to navigate battlefields using cover than to simply bob and weave through open ground (lets not even bring up Immunity) while enemies are using mass accelerator guns with auto targeting systems.

2.Linear cover ridden level design

An honest complaint, but it isn't nearly important enough to say that the game isn't deserving of the many awards which it's gotten. Mass Effect is great because of the sum of its parts.

3. Inconsistent Story

This is just an infinitely debatle point, and one that I'll not go into aside from saying that looking across the breadth of Video Game stories, it's fair to say even with the heaviest bias that it's pretty good

And yet with you summary of ME2, you forget to list a great many things, such as Character Interaction, Conversation system of Mass Effect, Save import feature, dynamic battle system with the 3 pillars of Combat, Tech and Biotics, Power evolutions, Audio FX, Cinematic production, Armor customization (albeit no squad armor), Character depth, Voice Acting, Great music.

It's easy to pick your favorite nasty features and dig into them and leave out everything else that makes your argument less sensational but it's never honest to do so.

That's one way to completely own a troll.

Woohoo! BioWare hasen't been destroyed by EA! (Or at least the ME team)
Now as long as this isnt milked until it's sour like a certian FPS franchise we should be okay!

I'll have to agree in a sense, at least with Battlefield 1942.  It seems like BF1942 introduced the whole concept of taking vehicles, which, for me, was an astounding achievement.  I LOVED that game, my friend and I would take turns playing it for hours.  I could still play it today, simply for the playability of it.

The ME franchise obviously beats most anything else in terms of sheer story & immensity, but I agree with you on BF1942. Great game.
