I haven't a shield to use yet. But I figured I could fight sword and shield with a Longsword.

I'm not sure if it changes once I actually get a shield, but my character is wielding his Longsword with 2 hands.

It is not a greatsword.

Once I actually get a shield will this change? Or should I choose another proficiency all together?

Regards, Deagonx. ;)

Im playing a human fighter. Thank you for the contribution.

While your at it, would you mind explaining how I 'identify' items?

items are identied automatically when picked up, if your Lore is high enough (this might mean *anyone's* Lore, unsure)

btw. A human weilding a longsword two handed gets a bit of extra damage (1.5 * Str modifier, i believe), but can use a shield at normal damage.

That's correct. Medium weapons (except rapier) are 2-handed if you don't have a shield or another weapon in the off-hand.

Thank you.

However, is there any OTHER way to identify an object?

Other than having a good lore? I remember in a game I used to play (FATE) You could cast an identify spell or have another NPC identify it for you. Is this implemented somewhere in the game?

Yes, there is an "Identify" spell. Also, when speaking with merchants, they have an identify object option that costs gold pieces (I think 100 gold pieces).  Give items to one of your companions who may have higher lore, they may be able to identify it for you.

Yes, you can have a companion with the Identify spell (level 1 wizard/sorceror/bard spell) cast identify on it. Or you can pay a merchant to have it identified (cost varies, but normally 100 gold).

If you are playing in the OC (or a lot of other modules) you will have companions who can easily take a lot of points in Lore. Simply give them the items and they'll probably be able to identify them. Bards get a big bonus to Lore, too.

Otherwise use Identify or pay at a store, as mentioned.
