Choosing a side

It seems obvious already that near the end of the game there is going to be a large conflict between the Templars and the Mages, and something having to do with the Qunari, and Hawke is going to have to choose a side. Can you save your game before making that choice, finish, then go back and try the other ending? Or if you've supported one side throughout the game, it doesn't let you suddenly switch?
Although having started Act 2 and gotten quests to help the apostates, I gather there is a fair amount of content on both sides leading up to that moment, so it's worth playing both sides all the way through. The ending is the meaty part though, so I just wonder about that.
I've been helping the mages, but I didn't import a DA:O save, so I don't want this to be the one I keep for DA3. I definitely want the one I keep to be on the mage side, though. So I'm trying to decide if it's worth doing a Templar playthrough.

You can suddenly change which side you've sided with despite previous choices so don't worry about being locked into picking one side.

Thanks! That's a better way of wording it.
