Why do a number of abilities or items in the game no work as they are described?
I'm playing as a male rogue and one of his abilities is to have a 100% critical chance for a shrot while when activated. Yet when I activate it, I definitely do NOT critical with every hit, a large number of them will be standard hits and against tougher characters I won't critical at all.
Another one is that mark of death claims it lasts 10 seconds on the target you cast it on. yet when I cast it on a boss (kinda the whol point of the ability isn't it?) it lasted around 3 seconds if even that.
The last and most frustrating thing I've had is that I bought a ring with an ability labelled "Immunity to knockback" thinking it'd be worth splashing out on something expensive like this to stop the incredibly frustrating combat mechanic they introduced in DA2 for no good reason. When you get hit, someone with higher strength (which means pretty much everyone even bloody archers hitting you in the face) or something along those lines will send you flying through the air... repeatedly. Only the ring didn't stop this from happenening, it's still happening to my rogue a reasonable amount.
Is this some sort of armour class thing that I'm not following here? It's kinda frustrating when these abilities don't work as described, especially something that's designed to be used on tougher enemies or something that clearly states immunity to knockback.
Can anyone explain this to me?

I don't know if there is some underlying combat mechinaic that the game hasn't explained to me or that I just don't know but it'd be nice if someone could clear this up for me.

Not sure about that.

More powerful enemies have a duration reduction factor applied to debuffs against them, such as Mark of Death, staggering, etc.

Are you talking about the Unforgiving Chain talent? That doesn't guarantee a critical hit, rather, it increases the chance of making a critical hit with regular attacks. If you use Explosive Strike (and get the upgrade Merciless Strike) with Unforgiving Chain then you will guarantee a critical hit.
