I don't know that I'd call the Mage/Templar brouhaha in DA2 very "grey" it was more like having both sides going to extremes, at least in Act 3. No more morally grey than sticking one foot in boiling water and the other foot in ice water and calling the net temperature "pleasant."
It kind of reminded me of the central conflict in The Witcher 1, to be perfectly honest.
Granted, I kinda viewed that as black (the Scoiaetel seemed less interested in forcing reform than in killing as many humans as possible) vs. gray (the Order were racists who often carried the idiot ball, but at least seemed to stand for something other than death). But that's just me, and this thread isn't about TW1.
Back on topic, I'd agree that the way the conflict was presented in DA2 is focused on the most interesting parts of it. I think a follow up - as long as it takes place during what now appears to be an open conflict - will be a better opportunity for exploring additional lore as opposed to setting up the revolution.
