that's true, it seems people are making jokes about this rapture like there's no tomorrow!

Honest opinion in reguards to him from my point of view, he's a Charlatan. I men its like from a report I just seen on him his group owns assets in the 100's of million and is a heavy stock trading group. And when told on those who sold everything his remark was "I never told them to do that and even with the Rapture coming I still need a house to stay in, and a car to drive." Hmm maybe he should use that money to help those he swindled. I'm sure that would be reflected on better in an afterlife than going "THE END IS AT HAND! SEND ME 15.95! And Save yourself"

I don't really think he's a conscious fraud - just a deluded and arrogant old man. Level of certainty exhibited by people in what they believe is usually inversely correlated with the actual competence they have in the subject - and being incompetent, they aren't competent enough to recognize how incompetent they really are, which feeds the certainty that they are right. He really painted himself in a corner when it came to this prediction, expressing absolute certainty - something a con-man would never do.

If he was a con-man, he'd never have set a precise date. You can bilk people of money much more effectively and on a somewhat permanent basis by being a little vague. Thus it is likely that he actually believes what he's saying - human psychology is such that once you are invested enough in an idea, it becomes nearly impossible to admit you're wrong, even when the facts are staring you in the face. What people do instead is "cognitive dissionance reduction", coming up with ad-hoc interpretations of events that allow them to say that they were right in some way, or at least justified in what they said and did, despite evidence to the contrary.

To pay people who had invested their money in the whole end-times hubbub would mean accepting, on some level, that he was in the wrong. He hasn't done that - he hasn't admitted any such thing even to himself. He believes that he was completely right about the end of the world, only misinterpreting some details of it. After all, he said all along that it would take the five months till October 21st to bring the whole world to a final end. As he sees it, he was only wrong about the timing of when people would be raptured, and in thinking that the cataclysms that would destroy the Earth would be spread out, rather than it all happening on October 21st.

So, as he sees it, this wasn't a failed prediction - he was MOSTLY right about it.

That's the contorted nature of self-justification and human ego-protection. On October 22nd though... I really don't know what avenue he'll have left. Probably some unconscious part of him that sees the absurdity, is hoping that he won't live that long.

As if the "Important" people in DC and across the world don't already have them. I can actully think of alot of good reasons to have a bunker. Hell I've been thinking of buying a former Military one or a Pilbox installation, from the Cold War Era. Mainly as ironically enough its cheaper than a house in my area... Plus I'ld like to see a tornado or Hurricane to knock it over.

Mainly more as I want something that will last and take a beating, rather than something thats overpriced built from wood, and a good wind or a match can ruin it.

In 94, he actually hedged his bets, putting a question mark on "Judgement day in -94" - back then he said that it was either going to be 1994 or 2011. This time he said that there is no chance at all that it's NOT going to be 2011 - he said that "the bible guarantees it". He's repeatedly said that it's utterly impossible that the world wouldn't end in 2011, with the final end coming in October 21st, without any shadow of a doubt.

So, he's REALLY painted himself in a corner. On October 22nd, he doesn't really have any options left - on the May 21st failure, he resorted to the "it was all spiritual, rather than physical" excuse (Identical to the excuse I believe the Jehova's Witnesses used way back when they falsely predicted the Judgement day), but he's been absolutely clear that on 21st of October, the world would cease to exist.

That's why I'm looking forward to the 22nd of October - either he's finally going to have to face up to having been utterly and totally wrong, OR he's going to demonstrate mental gymnastics of truly epic proportions, coming up with some excuse that I truly cannot fathom.

I would be (mildly) surpriced though if he comes up with another date after the 21st of October - he's really put it all in on that date, and even through his extreme level of delusion, he must realize that on 22nd, he's lost all credibility. It'll be entertaining for the rest of us though.
