To be fair, everyone in the game has a universal translator, so Shepard could hypothetically be from any city as you don't know which language he is speaking for sure.

You know, I've heard this claimed but I have never once heard this pronunciation in the game. Can you give me an example of when this is said?

That's asking for too much. Replay one of the games again, male Shepard says "aboat" because Mark Meer is Canadian. >_>

I live near Detroit, that must mean I'm a poor violent thug.

There is no cannon home town or cannon home city for earthborn Shepard. Whatever place of origin you decide for your Shepard.

I wish that were true, but I don't think Meer could pull off the Boston accent. Hale...maybe.

Well I think it would be cool if the player could decide but judging by Shepard it's somewhere in Canada or high up in the USA (Colorado, Alaska etc.)

That or it's just any heavily American populated region in the USA.

My Shepard was born on a ship though... :'(

Shepard can be from anywhere, although the Anglo-Saxon surname somewhat limits the range of backgrounds.

Canadians do not say aboot, the only people who use this pronounciation are people who are trying to do an impersonation of a Canadian.

I decided a while ago that my Shepard was from Detroit, but that's only because I like Detroit. All major cities have crime.

I'm asking you exactly where in the game he says this as I haven't ever heard it. I'm certainly not going to replay an entire 30+ hour game just because you can't remember when exactly this is said.

:P

Yeah, I know, I was being sarcastic because I don't feel like going all over Youtube searching for a clip where male Shepard pronounces the word "about." People with Canadian accents like Mark Meer, typically pronounce the word "about" as "a-boat" (not"aboot," that's an exaggeration) as opposed to many people in the US who pronounceit as "ab-owt." I can't remember where in the game exactly, but I remember the pronunciation slipping up in the dialog somewhere.

In Mass Effect 1, talk to Nihilus in the beginning. Nihilus will say something like "This will give us time to talk." Shepard will say "What about?". That is when his accent really comes through.

That was the exact moment I stopped playing my maleShep, and gave up on that concept altogether.
