As long as he's from either Pittsburgh (where I grew up) or The Hornet's Nest/ The Q.C.-- Charlotte, North Carolina (where I live now), I'll be happy.

Seriously, visit either of those cities. The City of Bridges is nice (Phoenix from the Ashes and all) and Charlotte isn't any slouch (growing at a redunkulous pace). If I had to chose one it would hands down be Pittsburgh. Can't turn my back on the place where I became a man, right?

Canada? since when does Canada have any gangs, Im pretty sure theres a side mission in ME1 that mentions Shepard ran with a gang called the 8th street reds or something, so im going to assume that hes from cali.

Imho:

Born in Singapore (or nearby) if she's a biotic. Born in Singapore or anywhere else if she isn't.

I think that Sinapore was an offworld colony by the same name.

Shepard can be from anywhere, although the Anglo-Saxon surname somewhat limits the range of backgrounds.

Does it? Even today surnames don't really tell you much about where a person was born. I imagine that this is even more the case in the future.

Well I don't know about the future but I'd say a name does give a general impression of where a person is from. I would guess there aren't too many Shepards in say, Chongqing.

No such beast. Canada is a *big* place, filled with regional accents. An accent from the Prairies isn't the same as one from Quebec or the Maritimes.

The dude that voices Shepard seems to have a Western Canadian accent (sounds like either Alberta or Saskachewan to me). The most common stereotype accent wise in Canada is probably the Ontarian accent, which is mocked with things like "aboot" (which I don't think I have ever actually heard).

But really, saying that there is one "Canadian accent" would be the same as saying there is an "American accent", despite the evidence pointing to distinct accents from Boston, Queens, the mid-West, the South, etc...

No.
Bioware have never said that.

That and the american astronaut hes named after.

Shepard is named after Alan Shepard, the second man in space.
Him [Alan] being American has nothing to do with it.

Canada doesn't exist in the year 2185. Nor does America. All the North American countries are combined into one bigass country.

Lol, yeah. I haven't heard "aboot" ever and I lived in Ontario/Quebec most of my life. I don't know where Americans come up with these things...But yeah, sorry to say, we pretty much sound just like you guys. :P Pretty sure both voice actors that voice Shep are from Edmonton, therefore in Alberta. (Where almost all BioWare people are from.)
Canada/USA/Mexico are all 1 big country in ME universe. But, if it comes down to a town...I'd say probably somewhere on the western coast. (So either...Vancouver, BC or someplace in Cali.)

But don't they settle their disputes through choreographed dance numbers.  The first gang to get served losess, right?

That's not what we consider a real gang in the U.S.

There is no cannon home town or cannon home city for earthborn Shepard. Whatever place of origin you decide for your Shepard.

I wish that were true, but I don't think Meer could pull off the Boston accent. Hale...maybe.

And there is no chance at all that Shepard possible got a canadian parent, is good with accent. Or maybe the player imagine another accent.

Shepard is a great name because Shep is a shepherd of humanity.
And it sounds good.

I, for one, has been explicitly talking about Mark Meer's accent. So far as I can tell that is the context of which we have been discussing Canadian accents. I dont think anyone has claimed that Mark Meer has the "one true" Canadian accent. Even the quote above is asking what is "a" Canadian accent, not "the" Canadian accent =p

From the time Shepard is from, Earth is almost a Global village.
I think city and republics have been unified and every ethnicity among humans resides together.

But Shepard has been deemed an Orphan, someone whose origin and place of birth seems unknown.Brought or carried by some good Samaritan to the Alliance orphanage for creating expendable man power...............but Shepard is what he is now against all odds as always.

I understand what you're saying, but the point is still kinda valid. Saying that Mark Meer has a Canadian accent is like saying that Keith David has an American accent. Technically true, but not horribly accurate.
