True. I have a German last name but I was born in Southern California (near Los Angeles), which is why my Shep is from there.Bad King wrote...

Shepard can be from anywhere, although the Anglo-Saxon surname somewhat limits the range of backgrounds.
Does it? Even today surnames don't really tell you much about where a person was born. I imagine that this is even more the case in the future.
Which city is earthborn Shepard from?

Oakland.
Shepard is from Oakland.
What? He is from the crappy side of the bay? Maybe he is a hippie in disguise infiltrating the man and is actually from Berkley.

The location is very hard to determine, based on the information presented, nor does location truly mean anything.

yeah i heard about the countries now are pretty much the continents. Not sure I approve of this, in the future hard to say what would happen. Any idea what countries exist?
Europe is quite likely within the next 50 years to become a single state, simply because it would be the economic powerhouse of the globe and because of the different terrain and weather it is possible to have a Europe that is sustainable. Hydro-Electirc Power in Northern Europe, Solar Power in the Med and Wind Power and a mix of the other two along the Fertile plains of Eastern and Western Europe.
North America, US, Canada and Mexico, could do the same however the US and Mexico have a much more strained relationship than Europe does with it self. So they would need to get over that. Other wise they can become as powerful as Europe would be if they unite.
China relies heavily on the US and Europe currently, but it does have very exponential growth though it is yet to be seen whether they can keep that up for the next 20 years. As a rule of thumb the more powerful a country becomes the more powerful a population becomes, likely leading to China becoming a Republic and possibily merging with the Republic of China to finally form a Unified China.
South America could quite easily become a Super-State though they would not reach the same level of Power as Europe, the US and China without serious development. Australia could possibily join Europe or North America, odd I know but it could join for prosperity and security sake. Japan could join with China if China changes its ways, or perhaps an entire Asian Super-Power would arise, if that is the case then they could easily overtake Europe and North America. Finally Russia and India, Russia may join Europe and India could possibily join a Asian State if China and Japan are also there to create stability.
Just my thoughts. Sorry for the wall of text but I am doing my dissitation on this. That is a very simplified and sporadic text bloc.

No such beast. Canada is a *big* place, filled with regional accents. An accent from the Prairies isn't the same as one from Quebec or the Maritimes.
The dude that voices Shepard seems to have a Western Canadian accent (sounds like either Alberta or Saskachewan to me). The most common stereotype accent wise in Canada is probably the Ontarian accent, which is mocked with things like "aboot" (which I don't think I have ever actually heard).
But really, saying that there is one "Canadian accent" would be the same as saying there is an "American accent", despite the evidence pointing to distinct accents from Boston, Queens, the mid-West, the South, etc...
I, for one, has been explicitly talking about Mark Meer's accent. So far as I can tell that is the context of which we have been discussing Canadian accents. I dont think anyone has claimed that Mark Meer has the "one true" Canadian accent. Even the quote above is asking what is "a" Canadian accent, not "the" Canadian accent =p
Indeed... Annoys me so much when people read "a" as "the" when talking about accents...

Race isn't just about colour, there are genetic variations and dispositions.
Race doesn't really exist, at least not like that. At best, race is only useful as a social-mental concept in describing what people look like... but that's it (and even then it's still very subjective). There's only one type of human and that's homosapien; we simply haven't been separated for long enough to split. Also, our species is so homogeneous (seemingly from some kind of population bottleneck, circa 70,000 years ago), that we couldn't be more opposite from a species made up of a few sub-species.

Bioware have never said that.Shepard is named after Alan Shepard, the second man in space. That and the american astronaut hes named after.
Him [Alan] being American has nothing to do with it.

I could see this heh. But really Shepard could have grown up anywhere, since it seems like North American English is the dominate language of the world. Although given that default Shepard is whitey-tighty and speaks like someone from the U.S./Canada most likely he originates from North America.
I would not be surprised if Shepard grew up in the 2150s Vancouver/Seattle Metro, since apparently that's where the game starts. Be a nice potential tie-in for Earthborn characters.

I hope they don't canonise it. There's still many ways to introduce Earthborn-specific dialogue without referring to Shepard's hometown (for all we know, Shep didn't live in the same town the whole time he/she was on Earth anyway).
