Okay, I gotta know. What's the awesome dick joke? I can't stand to look at Fenris, let alone romance him, so I'll never hear it otherwise.

In the aftermath of the love scene, where Fenris seems distressed at having spent the night with M!Hawke, Hawke leans back with a grin, leering, "I know it's a lot to take in."

If you pick the sarcastic dialogue option, that is. I won't bet a vital organ on it, but I think that's the joke. It's too bad Isabela wasn't there to hear it, because it was priceless

Lastly is Merrill. She's so cute! She reminded me of Codex from the guild, who happens to be every geekboy's dreamgirl (and has caused many of my female friends to question their orientation). Sure she's naive and foolish, and gets the keeper killed, but she was misunderstood. Was it really all her fault? If her clan had helped her instead of shunning her, would it really have ended as bad as it did? My defense for Merrill is that after she was exiled from the dalish, she started to have doubts, but couldn't go back. She was already a loner amongst the dalish, she had no close friends who would stand up for her if she wanted to return. She had nothing to live for except the eluvian and the chance it might work; that is until she fell for hawke. S/he's really all Merrill's got, and having someone like that to care for her, an elf with no life and few friends, is pretty heartwarming. Whether you argue with her because you don't want to see her get hurt, or you support her because you want to share her optimism, I think it makes a pretty sweet love story.

Given this... yes, I'd say Merrill. But once again, I have to say that I find the rivalry path both extremely creepy and very maddening.

While your hero is shaped by the events around him or her, Fenris remains stuck at I-will-lash out-at-everyone-for-no-reason and all-mages-must-die. If he were the one walking around with a spirit of Vengeance inside the whole of Thedas would turn into a smoking wasteland in a heartbeat. But if that's your cup of tea....

... Wow.  Now THERE's an image.  I could completely see that happening. ...

I'm not really a fan of romances but I do like romantic stories, if that makes any sense. I'd just like to know everyone's opinon on the best romance in the game. I'm not asking who your favourite love interest is, I just want to know which of the four options makes for the most romantic playthrough overall.

It doesn't necessarily have to depend on whether you like that character so much as it depends on how emotional/sexy/cute/dramatic their romantic plotline is, should you follow it all the way through.

Hmm.  Going by this criteria, I think Anders is the most romantic story.  I'm a sucker for that whole "lovers against the world" theme, and the sheer tragedy of Anders'n Hawke.  I'll take a steeeeep shot of tragic in all my romances, thank you!

To some I can understand why Isabela might not seem like the romantic choice per se, but depending on how you play it, I think it can be totally romantic. She has completely fortified herself emotionally from falling in love, because of her previous marriage, so it's all the more worthwhile to hear her admit she's falling for you. She has little personal reason to stay in Kirkwall, especially if she gets castillon's ship, but she remains by your side. Your relationship even determines whether or not she returns the Qunari relic. You and you alone have the most significant impact on her life, which sounds pretty romantic to me. I think the whole "I got your back" kind of buddy routine can be just as romantic as the super emotional "you're the only one" scenario.

Just an FYI, as an aside.  Isabela's relationship does not determine whether she returns the relic, if you mean whether she's your LI for a given playthrough.  If either her rivalry or friendship is high enough, she'll return it, regardless of whether you're romancing her.

Aside from the dagger to the ribs in the love scene (they could have at least removed the top coats and pointy bits for those), and a bit too much cheese in the dialogue, Anders rules for romance. I too appreciated the pounce kiss. Great voice acting. One of my peeves was that by romancing Anders, you lost some of the most endearing bits of dialogue from him. I would have liked to have had both. Fenris is interesting, if you can avoid having your eyes poked out by his pauldrons, and have the patience to wait for him to come around. Couldn't handle sanctimonious Sebastian after the "too much hitting" line, and the idea of a chaste marriage ...SMH. Brought back memories of the creepy Paladin-mance from Baldurs Gate (I'd have loved a tryst with Minsc, but I digress) Merrill gave me the little sister vibe, and I kind of felt that Isabella truly was a side dish (great line, that).

I have a hard time not romancing Anders, so I have no idea what those endearing bits of dialogue are.  Examples, please?

for DA2 it was Merrill for me, in DAO it was Leliana... ME1 & ME2 it was Liara.

yeah, in some games I went with the obvious choices, so sue me :P

Oh, the romance between your char and Aribeth in NWN was also great, one of my all-time favorites.

I've only completed the Friendship-Romance with Isabella so far. It's an odd duck, to be sure. It feels a bit more... down to earth, to me, than from what I'm reading about the other romances. You begin as sexual paramours and nothing more, it's up to you (the player) to push for something meaningful, but Isabella rebuffs it. As time goes on, Isabella has to admit to herself that she loves having you around and can rely on you, just as you rely on her. Then she has to confess her feelings, not knowing if you've emotionally moved on by then.

I like the romance as there's much less emotional angst, only emotional distance. I would have liked to see some more scenes fleshing it out, like Isabella wrestling with coming to terms with her growing affection for Hawke.

So, it's not "Romantic" in terms of mushy, candle light dinners, or big emotions and declarations of love, but it feels (to me) like a love that grows out of a partnership, in a "we beat up bad guys together" sense.

Best romances to me in DA2: Isabella and fenris, from DAO Alistair and lily.

The 4 of them are so different and yet lovable.

Fenris - mainly because my definition of 'romantic' includes the possibility of a 'happy' ending. I've never found tragedy particularly romantic tbh. Romeo and Juliet just annoys me - 'leave town you fools!', but I digress. I tried romancing Anders but I couldn't finish that run. It did have the effect of making me like him a little more, but, his appeal as a romantic object is lost on me.

Fenris might be a little grumpy, a little focused on his distrust of mages and more than a little odd (three years!? seriously Fenris, wtf!?) but he has a sweet rather unexpected sense of humour and in the end, when it counts, my Hawkes could rely on his support.

That's my idea of romantic.

This.  I think Anders can be funny and all, but sexy?  No.  And it's all too sappy for me.  So tortured, so dramatic.  Bleh.  Also the idea of him being merged with another being who is also present at all times even during intimate ones is...disturbing.

Fenris and Isabella are my faves by far, with Merril next (although IMO she seems young, which is probably because she's just such an airheaded goofball, but still it creeps me out a bit).

Oh I didn't mean romantic relationship, I just meant that it goes to show what a big effect you have on her life, even if you're not pining for her.

Either Anders or Merrill...I felt more of a connection to them with my Hawkes than Isabela, Sebastian, or Fenris.

And Sebastian is dead last. Chastity isn't exactly romantic. :/

I have finished Hawkes who has romanced Anders and Merrill, Sebastian feelt a little more like flirting to me. No problem with that, hope that they will get more into their relationship later on.

Anders was so sad, and so romantic. Merrill was the one I romanced on my first Hawke, the one that I played blind and did everything wrong with. Both are great! I don't think I could either one was better than the other, I want to see both of them again. I'll just choose the LI that has the path that I feel like seeing with the current Hawke I guess. Happy to read so many positive things about Izzy, she's the next Hawke's LI.

She finds you horribly boring and it's hard to imagine them together, at the end of Act 3 she suddenly goes "I feel bad. :(" and then says she wants to become somebody you'd be proud to be with.

Yeah that...that was weird.

:/

They really should've left that "oh you're so boring." bit out. It makes the relationship seem...odd. A nice guy =/= boring.

I'm not sure what wuffcat is talking about, actually.  Maybe wuffcat is referring to when Anders warns you (if you are a mage) about Fenris being dangerous to you because of his inflexible thinking, and mentions that there might be someone closer to your mindset that may be a better choice (himself).... There's also a walking around conversation where he tells Fenris that you showed good judgment in breaking up with Fenris...?

Endearingwise, I thought Anders had some nice dialogue in both the Friendship and Rivalry romances - the problem is you have to do both sides to see all the possibilities.  If you romance him as a Friend, you get a nice bit about how he misses his cat; if you romance him as a Rival, the dialogue bit you get in the same spot talks about why he's been writing up all those manifestos and hiding them in different spots in your mansion (essentially, to try to convince you to his point of view).

Best line happened in the Rivalry romance - At one point he despairs, and says, "How can you be so antagonistic by day and so passionate by night?!"  Let me just say: Wow.
