In my first playthrough, I romanced Anders, because I love-love-loved him in Awakening. I was a little disappointed in the romance. Throughout Act 3, I kept waiting for "nookie the night before the fight", ala ME, but it never happened. When I beat the game, I kept telling my husband that I must have missed something. I racked my brain trying to figure it out. The one semi-"intimate" scene was over in about 2 seconds, so I just assumed that was an appetizer, and there would be a main course coming up later. Nope. I was crushed.

I really liked the Isabela romance. Her dialogue is awesome throughout, whether she is your LI or not. I could completely sympathize with her self-inflicted barriers in regard to marriage, and it was cool to be able to change her mind, and to find out that there was more to her than a shallow, self-centered ****. Heck, even Aveline changes her mind about her by the end (completely different subject, but their random party banter was fantastic).

I wish I understood the fascination with the Merrill romance. Obviously the developers were sweet on her, as her sex scene was the longest of any of them, (and she got an entirely new outfit!), but why? I thought some of the things she said were cute, but I had trouble making the connection. Maybe she appeals to some people because you more or less have to play the role of "protector" with her? I don't know; that role doesn't really appeal to me.

Fenris. Never in my life has a video game character turned me into a fangirl - until Fenris. I had suspicions about him being awesome towards the end of my first playthrough, while I was romancing Anders, so when I started on my second, I knew he would be my choice. Man, there is something about his voice (I love you, Gideon Emery) that just makes me melt. I know some people found him to be too broody, but it has never bothered me because I completely understand why he would be that way, and accept it. I didn't realize he had a great sense of humor until my 5th or 6th playthrough; I was always diplomatic when talking to him before that. Gotta love a guy with a sense of humor. I was blown away by the romantic sequence where when you go back to the mansion, Fenris is waiting...

And now, I'm attempting to rivalmance Sebastian. I know that it won't go very far, but I thought I still needed to try it out. I just can't bring myself to doing the whole chaste marriage thing, phooey. I'm hopeful that future DLC might make things a little better for his romance, but I know that's probably not realistic. A girl can hope, though, right?

Long story short - for me, Fenris was the most romantic playthrough.

Edit: All of my romances have been friendmances, with the exception of Sebastian.

Edit #2: OK, I felt compelled to go back and give Anders another shot, since he was my very first playthrough, and I've had several since. Now I'm thinking my initial reaction may have been unwarranted. I had high expectations of the romance at the time. Now, after having romanced everyone (sounds awful, doesn't it?), I'm thinking I might have been wrong. Anders is like "McDreamy", and Fenris is like "McSteamy". ;)

Most Romantic love story in DA2? That's easy:

Aveline & Donnic
*disk scratch* WHAT?

Here's a woman who has already lost her first love (and she possibly had to be the one to put him out of his misery), buries herself in work, and fumbles her way into a romance with your help. The whole quest chain is light hearted but touching. The commentary from other companions is priceless, and Aveline's relationship becomes quite a bit of discussion amongst party members in Act 3. Although it isn't witnessed, here's in the only relationship that actually ends in marriage.

As for Hawke I'd say it's a toss up between Merrill and Anders. Anders is a tragic love story that follows all the tragic love story rules. It's not my thing (I hate Anders) but it has all the right parts to qualify for a Tragedy.
Merrill also follows all the basic tropes of a lost and lonely girl who falls for the hero. Toss in some cute dialog and a bewitching voice and you have a recipe for romance. It does feel incomplete, but then again a lot of the relationships in the game feel a little incomplete. Rivalmance doesn't make as much sense to me (If you refuse her the knife I'm surprised she doesn't just leave the party/game) but does make for the best romance scene dialog in the game.

Isabella fails in the romance department for me. Sure she comes back because of Hawke in Act 2, but she'll also come back if you're her buddy or boring (huh? I know that doesn't make sense to me either). You get a little bit in Act 3 like she's finally letting her guard down... then you get some sex jokes... Then her final talk in the Last Straw is almost the same if you're her friend/boring person or her lover. There could have been more to this.

Fenris I've barely explored, honestly because I feel like he belongs in a Final Fantasy game (Hi Basch!) than in a western rpg. Just watch the youtube videos.

Actually, Sebastian stops being a brother on the rivalry path to be a full-time prince, so celibacy is no longer an issue.

Anders is terrible with his cheesy lines, extreme statements and general bitterness. I am glad to murderknife him in the end. One time I romanced him was just cringy.

Sebastians... I wouldn't call it a romance.

Everyone elses romances were good though in my opinion. The soft and supportive romance with merrill, the feisty pirate falling for the hero with isabela or fenris opening up after a life of abuse and fear.

Exactly! That's why I'm not friendmancing him. :D

The chaste thing is not my cup of tea. I'd read in other threads that the rivalmance was the way to go. I'm curious about how this will actually shake out, though... is there a love scene at all? Maybe I'll look it up on YouTube.

Edit: I just finished up my Sebastian rivalmance. WOW, that was boring, and totally not worth an entire playthrough.

I really agree with you. I have become totally fangirl over Fenris... He is probably the main reason why I want a continuation of Hawkes story. He is such a nice characeter to go to "waste"... And there is something about his voice...

I first romanced Fenris friendship, then Anders. the Anders romance felt... empty. Boring. Gave me nothing, really.

Then I decided to rivalmance Fenris as a male Hawke... simply because I can. Which I found very interesting (although strange to have to dudes hooking up...) But I found Fenris more fitting being... gay somehow. After that playthrough he will always be gay in my mind. And surprisingly is my favorite romance.

So, regardless. Fenris for sure.
Next up is Sebastian as soon as the "#$% PSN is up... OR Isabella. Adore her!

Funny you say that - I romanced Anders first and Fenris didn't feel as epic, afterwards. The kissing/pre-sex scene is steamy and his voice is great but, I don't know, I just didn't feel as invested. Perhaps it was because I did it on my only pro-templar run, with a Hawke I didn't much like (I found it hard to side with Meredith but I did that one run for science).

I agree with all of these opinions, which is particularly why I have a hard time deciding myself. I don't think there is any one factor that makes a story romantic, it's a culmination of many things. Drama and angst are nice if used correctly, but then so are cuteness and affection, I have no real preference.

Anders certainly seems like the most dramatic (and likely the most tragic) option, and dramatic is good, but is it the best? I really sensed the emotional connection between Anders and Hawke, and how he was torn between his mission and his love for him/her. If you choose to kill him or desert him in the end, it's all the more heartbreaking if he's your love interest. That's what I like to have in my romances, emotion, whether positive or negative. One of my favourite lines is at the end when he says that someday someone like him would be able to love someone like hawke, and there'd be no templars to get in their way. It really got me to take his perspective seriously.

To some I can understand why Isabela might not seem like the romantic choice per se, but depending on how you play it, I think it can be totally romantic. She has completely fortified herself emotionally from falling in love, because of her previous marriage, so it's all the more worthwhile to hear her admit she's falling for you. She has little personal reason to stay in Kirkwall, especially if she gets castillon's ship, but she remains by your side. Your relationship even determines whether or not she returns the Qunari relic. You and you alone have the most significant impact on her life, which sounds pretty romantic to me. I think the whole "I got your back" kind of buddy routine can be just as romantic as the super emotional "you're the only one" scenario.

When it comes to Fenris, I've seen the romance scenes with him, and I have to say, they're pretty steamy. There's nothing sexier than a tortured soul who just needs some good lovin'. The major problem everyone seems to have with him is his broody attittude towards mages, and how no matter what you do, he always seems to disapprove. You have to consider he's been a slave for as long as he can remember, and not the cooking/dusting kind of slave, the killing kind. He's got trust issues. Not to mention the fact that he ended up slaughtering the first group of people who tried to help him on his master's whim. He's torn by guilt, mistrust, and the fear that he might hurt the only people he cares about. You see this really come out when he almost goes berserk on Hawke when you grab his arm. But if you do romance him, it is possible to convince him that people, even mages, can be trusted, and he can even side with the mages in the end. I find that pretty profound, at least as far as videogame characters go.

Lastly is Merrill. She's so cute! She reminded me of Codex from the guild, who happens to be every geekboy's dreamgirl (and has caused many of my female friends to question their orientation). Sure she's naive and foolish, and gets the keeper killed, but she was misunderstood. Was it really all her fault? If her clan had helped her instead of shunning her, would it really have ended as bad as it did? My defense for Merrill is that after she was exiled from the dalish, she started to have doubts, but couldn't go back. She was already a loner amongst the dalish, she had no close friends who would stand up for her if she wanted to return. She had nothing to live for except the eluvian and the chance it might work; that is until she fell for hawke. S/he's really all Merrill's got, and having someone like that to care for her, an elf with no life and few friends, is pretty heartwarming. Whether you argue with her because you don't want to see her get hurt, or you support her because you want to share her optimism, I think it makes a pretty sweet love story.

So yeah, with those points in mind, which sounds the best?

I love this post :3

Anders is probably the most "romantic" character... If you take the definition that romantic characters are meant to be soulful idealists, visionaries; and that "rebellion against established social rules and conventions" is also a huge part of the romantic movement.

So, whether you are involved in a relationship with him, or not, he's still a "hopelessly romantic apostate" (as Varric put it) in his own right. ; b

As a love interest, I still feel that Anders has the most romantic play through, although some of the dialogues often get a bit over the top (as most romances do), nauseously so! Lol! Doesn't help that some of Hawke's replies fall a bit flat too, or sound downright forced sometimes.

For some reason, that "Want a Sandwich?" line followed by Anders laughing and commenting that Hawke "...will be an inspiration to generations of romantic poets" is probably the one piece of dialogue where their relationship sounded the most natural, and genuine.

Plus, Anders definitely has the most romantic ending option... Mine went a bit like this:

Anders: "If we live through this, you know I'll be hunted... No one in Kirkwall will offer me mercy. But, if you would join me, I'd rather be on the run with you than safe with anyone else."

Hawke: "On the run... You mean, as in... Leaving the outskirts of Kirkwall? Traveling to new locations? Being constantly on the move and never stopping at the same place twice? As in, *not here*?"

Anders: "Well, yes... Wait. Why are you crying? Did I say something wrong?"

Hawke (sniffling): "No... Oh Maker, this is so beautiful! After having been stuck in Kirkwall for ten years, always exploring the same bloody streets, caves, warehouses, dungeons... I think this is the most romantic thing anyone could *ever* have told me! So, so beautiful... Ask me again!"

Anders: "Errr... Want to go on the run with me?"

Hawke: "Yes! Maker Anders, YES!!!" (Tackles him the the ground and share that one big passionate kiss that is sadly missing from the game)

Nothing was more romantic to my character, or said "happy ending" like the opportunity to run away from all this (namely the recycled locations) with her lover! Lol! Lol! Lol!

Not to mention the idea of fighting a revolution against the Chantry alongside my man (something I've been dreaming of doing since DAO)... Especially knowing that he's the one who inspired it... Brilliant! Most satisfying conclusion to any DA romances ever! : )

Awww come on!

Can't a girl have a little fun, or act silly without people taking it so seriously?  ;)

I didn't know this romance discussion was so important, and that I was risking to loose that writer's position at Bioware that I've been dreaming about for years if I dared parody an already cheesy romance story!  Lol!  Dear me!  What am I going to do?

I for one approve of this ending. We should just design our own videogame!

Anders wasn't setting out to change Thedas, he just blew up the Chantry so Bioware would make a bigger, more expansive game next time. If that's the case then I'm sure many of us would want to give him a big fat kiss.

I do wish the relationships had a bit more closure, but if they're intentionally left that way to make me buy the next game, then it's working.

Fenris for no particular reason other than none of the story or dialogue made me cringe or reach for a basin to be sick in. Lot's of people have been saying Ander's was the best. No way, it's cringe worthy and clichéd. The most most appalling load of drivel that I've had the misfortune to witness. I'm almost tempted to stab him out of spite for it. I don't know what cheap paper back romances the writers nick their ideas from, but his was bad. BAD!

I've only done Anders's and Fenris's romances so far. I thought the romance with Anders was better, though it could have been better if he didn't spit cliches and go completely cold for most of Act III. I realize that his obsession with mage rights and being overly serious during Act III is part of his character, but it kind of kills the romance.

Still better than Fenris. He's just broody and angry most of the time and then he leaves you for three years.

I'll probably try the female romances next, as I'm not too keen on having chantry boy in my party preaching all the time.

Isabela all the way, first time I've ever gone for a f/f romance. I think, considering the story spans 7 years, Isabela's romance makes the most sense; it starts out as just sex (in my head canon they would of started tumbbling in Act 1), takes ages to break her barriers down and rightly so and no chance of pregnancy in those long seven years.
As well as that I just adore her character, she is so much more multi-dimensional than most people realise, she always makes me laugh with her banter and actually she is one of the wisest characters in game (she put Anders in his palce so many times and she teaches Aveline the importance of knowing oneself). Oh and she's a pirate...that's just cool.

So yes Isabela for the most romantic/fun/well rounded romance arc!

Anders<3 is the only one for me!  lol   I tried Fenris, but Anders is so much better.  My male character romanced Isabela and I liked it, Merrill is too naive/young for me.  :)  Sebastian, bah he's not worth it.
