o Siding with the templars
o Supporting the Circle opposed to the freedom of mages
o Supporting blood magic
o Being a general male chicken without the roost?
Also, how do I get rival Sebastian without being an uncaring monster?

Is there any way to do it without also doing the following;

For how to rival Sebastian, take him along when you're being nice to mages, do NOT take him with you on the Finding Nathaniel Quest (if you get it), take him with you to the Night Terrors quest in Act 2 (although he will refuse to join you in the Fade), and be mean and rude to Elthina at every possible opportunity. Bad mouth the chantry whenever you get a chance. Also, encourage him to retake Starkhaven. Try these tips.
As for how to rival Anders, I think you either need to support the templars or support the Circle at least a few times in his presence. This should help you out. Also, avoid doing anything on the Friendship list.

It gives a list for each quest, in each act, of what Friendship or rivalry points will be gained from each of the dialogue choices
Looking each quest up on dragonage wiki is also very helpful.
Its relatively easy to get each party member to the friend/rivalry lvl you want, I have most of my party members to either full rival or friend by the end of act one, its just a matter of looking to see which chars will gain what points and how you want to play it, so if you want to rival anders but want to be nice to say Feynrael (sp?) then dont bring anders with you when you do the wayward son quest. See what Im getting at. You can play it the way you want to, but just look up to see who gets what points for the decisions your going to make and plan accordingly.
