Couple questions. I'm intending to reinstall DA and give it another try. Should I install these gameplay/dialogue fixes first, or are they for people who run into the specific problems? Also, what exactly is a conflict? Should I not install fixes that conflict for fear of breaking something, or will it probably be OK?

the problems are there for everyone if the fixes aren't installed.

most conflicts involve more than one mod altering the same game file (like the dialogue or appearance of a specific NPC).  individual mod readmes usually indicate where these issues arise and suggest a particular install order or have alternative/extra versions that are compatible with the potentially-conflicting mods.

Also another piece of advice you might want, take it or leave it from my own experience; never use more than one mod that changes the game on Awkening and/or the NPCs in Awakening. You will have problems. I did big time and had to redownload several times until I hand figured it out.
The same goes for DAO and DAII. Never double the same mod, even if it looks like it might be different than the one before. It will hit hard and cause problems.
I'm just letting you and all the other readers know who read this from my own experience. Clothing, it's a different situation. Bodies and types of bodies can be tricky. Game changing as far as the weather, camps, houses, towns, cities being changed, if they don't conform to the so-called loric demand or whatever its called, you might run into more than what you bargained for.  I did.
Anyway, that's my little bit of advice for you. Use it as you like and good luck and have fun playing!!:D

This is a copy of my comment post on the mod for the Ancient Elven Boots. I'm reposting it here because this is a sticky thread and I want to make sure it's seen. When talking about mods, their installation and use, people sometimes forget that not everyone is an experienced user, and just expect everyone to know about things like DAZIPs and how to Force Load.

Since it doesn't seems that BW will ever fix this properly, we are going to have to rely on a mod forever. And since there seems to have been some confusion about this, I've decided to post detailed instructions.

You will only want to use the Chantry Boots mod if you have not spoken to Ser Bryant in the Lothering Chantry. If you are past that point, use the other mod.

1 download Chantry_Boots.dazip
2 go to your DAO installation C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship and open daupdater.exe
3 from here you can either "select DAZIPs" or just drag the downloaded file right to here, click on it and hit "Install Selected," and you're done

Some people have reported issues like double attribute points when you level and toss around phrases like "force load" without explaining what they mean.

To avoid any problems when you start a NEW game, make sure that the addon is not enabled. On the start screen go to Downloadable Content, Installed Content TAB, and UNCHECK the box for Chantry Boots.

Play through the game until you get to Lothering and do a SAVE before you go into the Chantry. Go back to Downloadable Content and CHECK the box for Chantry Boots. Resume the game, talk to Ser Bryant as normal, get the key, your boots will now be inside the cabinet. Make sure to SAVE after getting the boots.

Now you want to disable the addon. Go back to the menu, into Downloadable Content and UNCHECK the box for Chantry Boots. This time, when you go to resume the game, it will detect that you have a save that is supposed to have a certain addon enabled, which is not enabled. It will ask if you want to Force Load, meaning force the game to load without your addon. There are a couple of confirmations, agree to those. Once you're in the game, check bags for boots, SAVE again, and you're done.

If you want to uninstall the addon, delete the fj_chantry_bootsp folder from C:\\Users\\NAME\\Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\AddIns. But using this method of checking and unckecking the box you shouldn't have any issues leaving it installed for successive DAO plays.

Enjoy your complete set of Ancient Elven Armor. I know I will, for the first time ever.

Just an FYI, I updated ZDF Dialog Fix a few days ago.  I do not know if there will be further updates at this time or if this is the final version.  But I also am still supporting ZDF in case anyone has any concerns about that.

For those intending to install or re-install DAO/DAA whether it be for reasons of fixing, or your first time,
1) Install the Game first. (No fixes, nothing)
2) Then after you install your game, update your game by patching it with Dragon Age:Origins 1.05 patch.

http://social.biowar...page/da-patches

Then, if you have any DLC's like Witch Hunt or others they should be on your entitlement page:

https://social.biowa...ntitlements.php

Before adding anything to your game like mods, download the DAO ModManager. You'll be working with a lot of dazip files and the mod manager accepts those zip files. Really simple too.

If you work with mods that are similar to each other be VERY careful and read closely. Sometimes the instructions doesn't state they conflict with other mods, sometimes they do. You have to be the judge.

On installing a dazip mod, once your file is downloaded and it opens up, your going to probably see two files, a folder and an xml file. Click the up arrow above the file and it'll close it into the dazip file you need.
Assuming your mod manager is already open, left click and hold the file and drag it over to the mod area of the manager, then let go. Usually takes a few seconds to a couple of minutes to download, depending on the size of your mod. (Mod manager area means Far Left)
This is what I do, maybe others do it different. It's worked for me so maybe it might be different for you. Just thought I'd give a little FYI from my experience to any and all who may have had problems in the past.

One other thing, if by chance you may be seeing a weird background with no objects except your hud or bar at the bottom, it's not you or your disc. Go out of your game, go to the DAO icon you use to open with and right click, hit properties, and look for what system it is set for. I'm running win7 and mine was set for windows xp. That's some problems some people don't look for. Check it out. Makes playing so much easier also.

Well, that's my end of my story, and so I hope you all enjoy playing Dragon Age Origins and Awakenings and Dragon Age II. Hope you enjoy your playing!!

I'm thinking about starting my first playthrough and came across this thread. First of all, thanks for all of your helpful advice! Second, is there any work in progress to integrate all of these fixes into one pack, similar to Mission Mojave or the BG2 Fixpack? I'd much rather wait for this than install the 100+ mods to make the game bug-free :)

That would be a great idea. Something like the gothic 3 community patches.

If I was:
     1. Smarter
     2. Had no kids (more time)
     3. Had more knowledge on how mods work besides installing them.

I would take on this project in a second.  Your gonna have to do some reading if you want to get your select mods all working in harmony.  On the plus side, I dont find it was involved as Elder Scrolls Modding.  Open up a notepad, make a mod folder, download the mod manager all the mods you want (some will work better when NOT a Dazip), then read the readmes and make compatibility notes in your notepad and go from there.  I spent a weekend off and on to make a perfect bug free game (im a little OCD like that) worth it though.

I wouldnt count on a single patch being created for this game.  Its kind of passed its prime (still a A+ game IMO) and alot of people have moved on BUT, there are alot of modders who have already done work on this game and it is nothing short of stellar.

I, for one, would really like a large community patch pack, or at least a list of all the mods you need that don't conflict with each other.
