What I want to know is whether the choices I make in conversations affect companions who are not currently in my party.
This may be a stupid question, I dunno but the reason why I'm asking this is because I've been keeping Aveline, Merrill and Varric in my party all the time (Nearly at the end of Act 1) and I always make the choices that'll promote friendship of those three. The last time I used Bethany was quite some time ago and back then her Friendship meter was a quarter away from full friendship. Now I'm near the end of Act 1 and I decided to check up on Bethany and when i got her back into my party, her friendship meter was full.
So maybe I'm seeing things or really didn't pay attention to Bethany's friendship but I'm sure this really happened.
So can someone confirm for me whether I can affect the friendship/rivalry of companions who are not in my current party?
Your answers will help a lot.
Thanks.
Can my decisions affect Non Party Member's Friendship/Rivalry?

If a party member is not with you when you make decisions, their friendship/rivalry meter does not change.

If you took Bethany to get your family's will, her Friendship will automatically go up at certain points in the quest, and if you give her the gift you find. It's something like +15 at least twice and it's easy to miss the notification.

that's why you need to rotate your party members once in a while on specific quests where you get big friendship/rivalry for them, depending on which one you're working.
I try to have most (if not all) party meters maxed out so I don't have to worry about this after I'm done with Act 1
plus you don't miss some game content - like Isabela bringing back the relic, which I totally missed on my first playthrough because I didn't have enough friendship/rivalry with her >(
