Right so I have these files for the custom model I made in- game
dagger_variation_kunai.gda
w_dgr_kunai01.dds
w_dgr_kunai01.mao
w_dgr_kunai01.met
w_dgr_kunai01.mmh
w_dgr_kunai01.msh
w_dgr_kunai01.phy
Don't know how to attach the files to this post. =/
When I create a new weapon(in this case a dagger), the variation shows up in Item Variation but the model doesn't show up? It only shows a black screen.

I tried opening up the models by File -> New -> Material and I can insert all my custom models in it, so I'm suspecting it has something to do with the .GDA file?

Perhaps it's because your model name doesn't quite follow the convention used in dagger_variation.gda.
The standard names have three parts. For example, Dagger 01 is shown in the GDA as (dgr, dg01, a) which corresponds to the model name dgr_dg01a_01.
Try changing your model name to XXX_YYYYZ_01, where (XXX, YYYY, Z) are the values in your GDA.

The standard naming would be actually more like dgr_dg01a_0 etc. The _0 at the end indicates it's the highest level of detail version of the mesh, and it's something separate from the name of the object itself as defined in the .gda
That said, i believe the three components in the .gda file can be defined quite freely. The important bit is, this name will be then expanded automatically by the game with w_ prefix and _0 postfix, so the name of .mmh file at least has to match that in order for the game to load the proper model.

Ok, thanks guys! Will take another look and modify the GDA file again, and at the .mmh file tonight.

LOL seems like both tmp7704 and I are having bad hair days - the format is actually w_dgr_dg01a_0 etc (i.e. w_XXX_YYYYZ_0) which is implicit in tmp7704's post. Apologies for the confusion.
