Infiltrator, then Vanguard... and I finally settled in with Sentinel for my cannon playthrough. I played a little Soldier in ME1 just to unlock the assault rifle for my other playthroughs, though.
What was your class on your very first playthrough of ME1?

My first class was a Vanguard. I've fallen in love and it's my favorite class.

I started the very first game as Soldier (and on Casual difficulty) but did not finish the game. At level 24 or so (upon reaching Assault Rifle achievement) I made a new Sentinel Shepard and finished the game with him (on Normal then). :-)
I found the Sentinel worked rather well (joined by Ashley and Wrex). Now I'm a Soldier again (on Hardcore) and always tag along Liara and Tali because I want to earn their achievements. This game is *definitely* harder than before...

Played Infiltrator in ME1... then Vanguard... Imported to ME2, I changed to Soldier though, and sticked with it ( even though I had the occasional playthrough with a Sentinel or another class)...

vanguard ( i like how this word sounded like - not a bad class tho ) but then my mains are soldier/infiltrator..i like the weapon/tech specialist classes more than the magic ones..and because these 2 guys excel in a world of biotics without being one ..that makes them even greater

Engineer. My "canon" Shepard switched to Sentinel in ME2.

Soldier. It's not like that classes in ME are really that different. You have the shooty dude and the dude who shoots a little bit less.
Infiltrator class is pointless because you don't infiltrate anything. You're not a class needed for say hacking or lockpicking because everyone can do it.

I started with soldier because I thought I wanted to see all the weapons first. But now I feel the opposite, I would of liked to see all the others first and then play with all them last. IMO the only advantage of soldier is the ability to use assault rifles(which won't apply in ME3), and the extra health and stuff.
But i've been trying to speed through playthroughs for the sake of having multiple characters in ME3. I feel it's faster to play as a soldier for this, as you have all weapons at your disposal.

I have yet to play a sentinel or an engineer but I probably will.

How about a poll for this? Would be interesting to see the results with the very first playthrough, with little prior knowledge of the game.

Adept, which remains my canon Shep's class. which is in part, surprising because I never am the "mage" class in any game. I'm always a thief/rogue/ninja type, I love to steal

Sentinel, for both magic and tech. I always like the jack-of-all-trades types.
It's a shame sentinels get that ugly looking armour as their class power in ME2. I never used it on principle (aesthetics>gameplay).
