I was more confused by the way he looked than by the fact that he had a cameo.
Honesty, why did Alistair and Tegan look so old and haggard while Leliana look younger?
Politics; that and the DLC already indicted that Leliana defied aging. She went from high lvl to about 7th when you find her in Lothering.

Oh, and to make cryptic, unexplained remarks about mages and such, so there can be speculation about these meaningless things in the hopes people won't realize how awesomely weak the story was in DA2.

Strange. In my playthroughs he was more interested in the Hanged Man. /me runs.
In mine, too. The only cameo that makes any sense, actually.

Admittedly it does make one think why he's carousing around Kirkwall with his chubbier ol' self. I was a bit puzzled myself.

A TON of fereldans went to kirkwall and he is checking up on his people hoping they will return. There are many reasons he could be there. Use your friggin imaginations, this is an rpg, it's all about you deciding why things happen.

Or it could have been that he was hoping to find an ally in Kirkwall, like he said.

Exept, if he's not King, we don't see Anora showing up for the same reason, do we? We don't get that information about Ferelden hiding mages, or tension with Orlais, do we? Doesn't she want allies? DOes she have the same problems with Orlais? Is she hiding mages from the Chantry?

maybe Anora sought allies elsewhere? There are more places than just Kirkwall to gain support from in the Free Marches.

Among the Templars, the Mages or a (hypothetical) Viscount with nobility which, by all accounts, is relatively powerless and militarily speaking, is possessed (apparently) only of a city guard?David Gaider wrote...

Sounds like one pretty desperate Fereldan now that I think of it.

Anora's not Alistair. Two different people, two different thought processes. She could have sought allies elsewhere. Maybe Anora thinks all Marchers are crazy. Maybe she'd rather go to Tevinter or Rivain or the Anderfels or...

ha ha ha =) I loved "the old ball and chain". That was great! Hmmm.... I know that he sent the ship so that the refugees could come back to Ferelden. Don't really know what goes on in the rest of Thedas but somethings up. Got the feeling that he wanted to check out Kirkwall, see if it would stay stable or if it would start falling apart.
I was happy to see him =)
Yes, you hear refugees in darktown I think talking about this, King Alistair sends a ship and those wishing to go home can go with him. Assuming he went home since the journal updates "Alistair is gone..." and this is all that it says.

I thought it was pretty clear he was seeking the Champion specifically. Slayer of Qunari, getter of things done, etc . Not the templars (he wanted to avoid Meredith and failed) and not the mages (he doesn't really acknowledge them). It's Hawke he sent the letter to, and it's Hawke he tries to entice home.

A better question would be... What the designer of Alistair's face was thinking / drinking? How much time did he spend doing it? Seriously.
Possibly she was trying too hard to get the face morph to look as close as it possibly could, even though the system wasn't designed to make faces much like Origins', and should have known that even the slightest difference would be picked apart and declared hideous. So she probably needn't have tried as hard as she did.
I thought it looked fine.
Aside from looks, it was just another badly constructed and cheap cameo, which I can't understand what Alistair or Hawke gained from their 1 minute long meeting... It was one of the many WTF moments I had with DA 2, for sure.
I enjoyed writing it. It was a fun moment, and felt like returning home to a character I knew well, at least for a bit. If you didn't enjoy it, oh well.

As far as I can tell, no one is happy with Alistair's new face. I'm fairly certain everyone on the forums considers it to be an atrocious mess of what Alistair looked like. And Teagan. People hate their new looks, myself among them.
As for the meeting itself, I liked it. It gives the Champion a way to actually find out what's happening in Ferelden that isn't second hand and possibly just an exaggerated rumor.

No kidding. Kudos on putting up with our crap. I don't get this one at all. DA2 certainly had its fair share of issues, but this isn't one of them.
C'mon people, this isn't a Scooby Doo mystery here. Ferelden might soon be invaded and he wants an ally in Kirkwall for the same reason anyone in power has wanted to control Kirkwall for a millennium. Its sea lane. Those big chains aren't just to make the slaves cut themselves in the old days, the city has a stranglehold on a crucial ship transit route. This is War Strategy 101: cut off your enemy's supply lines.

Meh. I don't *like* it, but I don't feel it's worth complaining about either. And that's saying something, because I whine like a two week old puppy. The only one that really bothered me was Zevran's. He looks like someone set his face on fire and tried to put it out with an axe. I actually wonder if he's got the same bug Garrus had in ME1 for a while, the game using a low poly model intended for long distance at close range instead.

I'd have liked it fine, too, if that information had been given to us in every playthrough - including the ones where Ali was a Warden or a drunk.
Sure, it was nice to have some cameos. But if the information was important - or if the visit was even important - it should have happened in every game. Since it didn't, I can't view it as anything but a gratuitous cameo, just like drunk Alistair and Warden Alistair.
