"DA2 is horrible! I'll make up stuff to hate about it so I can hate it some more!!"
I just know someone at some point is going to say they hated Varric and their reasons for it will make me want to bash my head in my wall.
"He has no beard!!"

2: Alistair looks older because not only has it been several years, he is the king, that tends to help along the aging process quickly.
3: Alistair came himself instead of sending a diplomat because he is the King, a Grey Warden, and a companion of the Hero of Ferelden, if you have a problem with him leaving the country you can tell it to his sword. (It would have been easier to say that he does what he damn well pleases I suppose)

Rifneno it really just appears to be people finding things to hate about DA2 because it didn't fit their idea of what it should be.

Varric's beard is on his chest.
But yeah, it's pretty silly how much people nitpick. The game had quite a few really glaring flaws, do we really have to go on a tangent about how the face of a character some people see, for a total of 2 minutes per playthrough, isn't a perfect replica of the DAO version?

As far as I can tell, no one is happy with Alistair's new face. I'm fairly certain everyone on the forums considers it to be an atrocious mess of what Alistair looked like. And Teagan. People hate their new looks, myself among them.
As for the meeting itself, I liked it. It gives the Champion a way to actually find out what's happening in Ferelden that isn't second hand and possibly just an exaggerated rumor.
I did not notice any change in Alistair or Teagan; just that Isolde was not screeching in the background. I thought they both looked fine.
Now Zevran is showing signs of poor lifestyle choices; just saying....

Actually Varric is the single best looking dwarf ever created.
I want a DLC where he kicks Oghren's ass.

This is true.
And aside from Zevran, the cameos were recognisable, which was probably the intent. Alistair was a cute, harmless drunk anyway. Leave the boy to his ale.

DA2 Alistair looks like he was smacked in the face with a cast iron frying pan, then savaged by a rabid mabari and tried to have his now nightmarish visage remediated by a back alley plastic surgeon who pulled a Michael Jackson on his face.
As for why Alistair is in Kirkwall, apparently its to mess with any Wardens that went through the Eluvian by claiming they're magically back in Denerim all of a sudden:?

This is the most hyperbolic description of another person's appearance ever presented in any forum by carbon based life in the history of time.

It came across (at least to me) like those movies where the big budget star comes back to the (not so big budget) sequel, smiles uncomfortably for the camera, says one or two hackneyed lines from the first movie ('swooping is bad' was clever and cute the first thirty times I heard it) and then beats a hasty retreat off camera to collect his cheque.
There is also the fact that as a Hero of the Blight, a Warden and the current King of Ferelden, he does not have to take as much of Meredith's crap as he did. The Viscount is dead and both the Champion, the Captain of the Guard and a huge portion of the population are Fereldan. Meredith should be worried when the King of Fereldan arrives unannounced, but instead of being worried she treats him like a child. I can think of a good dozen things Alistair could do in the situation and Meredith wouldn't have liked any of them. Even if Alistair can't think of them himself (and he isn't stupid) Teagan could, or Anora if she is in the picture.
The fight should have been about Meredith setting the precedent of declaring martial law in Kirkwall (and if one KC can do it so can others). Alistair could have been on his way to Orlais and Meredith should have been very very nervous. (The Divine would have to see Alistair and could order Meredith to install a neutral secular intermediary leader at the very least. That would probably have ended up being Hawke, Bran or even Aveline.)
All in all, while I appreciate the sentiment and the effort, I would rather not have had Alistair's cameo at all over what we got. I am sorry if that seems ungrateful.

I do try.
But, I really do not care for the DA2 face morph system. At best its only a marginal improvement over Origins IMO, and at worst you end up with Meth Head Zevran who apparently had sarcoptic mange eat away his eyebrows and Plastic Surgery Disaster Alistair. I just hate how every face has the same generally shaped, bloated features and the same overly smooth, Botoxed look.
I just wish if they were going to overhaul the whole thing, they'd drastically improve the technical fidelity of the faces AND have it so you could reproduce the faces of past characters with a little accuracy and not end up with them looking like a grab bag of chewed up Mr. Potato Head bits.

Perhaps it is just me, but Varric resembles Mickey Rourke, esp with hair tied back and wearing an open necked shirt. Really.

Ferelden I must say, seems to be one hell of a strong nation even if it looks so small. Sure, Denerim almost fell but they did in the end whoop the Blight and they probably could have won in the long run at Ostagar aswell. Loghain was a **** who didn't want to much bloodshed and got even more. Still, the Darkspawn is dumb and would be defeated.
EDIT: Also, he maybe look for the Hero of Ferelden? He do proclaim he returned back to Denerim I believe after some errands but what says he is not really looking for him and heard of this Champion of Kirkwall, much alike the Hero of Ferelden?
Would been awesome if Alistair had been around when the ending of the game started!

A TON of fereldans went to kirkwall and he is checking up on his people hoping they will return. There are many reasons he could be there. Use your friggin imaginations, this is an rpg, it's all about you deciding why things happen.
Or it could have been that he was hoping to find an ally in Kirkwall, like he said.
Exept, if he's not King, we don't see Anora showing up for the same reason, do we? We don't get that information about Ferelden hiding mages, or tension with Orlais, do we? Doesn't she want allies? DOes she have the same problems with Orlais? Is she hiding mages from the Chantry?
Anora is a different kind of ruler than Alistair. Where he makes alliances out of friendship, she manipulates and quite effectively.
Anora knows how to keep the Banns under her thumb and she probably applies the same principle to all public relations. She can probably apply the same principle to all public relations.
