I'm not talking about all per se. However, there is only one first person shooter that I've enjoyed and that is Unreal Tournament 2004 (that game is awesome). Nonetheless, there are just too many of them out there and I basically don't find them all that different from one another.

Really it depends on the kind of shooter. If its down to as simple as picking up a firearm and shooting, then it can get boring really fast. I'm not big into shooters myself, but games like Crysis (the original) have often held my interest because of story, adventure, and interesting abilities.

I find FPS boring except for a few.

Any Halo well I mean I only play this with my friends. If im home a lone this isn't getting touched.

Crysis 1 and Warhead. Love them. I can't believe how different Crysis 2 was. This and DA2 are huge dissapointments of the year.

*warning cursing in the video*
Arma 2 one of the best shooters ever though it's mostly for a niche market because unfortunately people don't like to think when playing fps's.

Battlefield can be fun sometimes I love 2142 I'll probably get Battlefield 3 but it's not a priority I'm more into RPG's or action/adventure games the occasional RTS, Starcraft 2 anyone, single player fps's though can be fun.

Bioshock, system shock, etc. Can't rule out the whole genre. Btw Arma III has been announced!!!

I've actually never played one.
I don't find them too appealing and from the bits I've seen my friend's kids playing on the Consoles they look kind of repetative.
I guess you could say I find the idea of them boring.
I can certainly see how Gamers with tastes different than mine can enjoy them, though.

They aren't boring, as long as they are well made.

Bioshock has a great story and allows different character loadouts in terms of powers, guns and weapon upgrades. It's a good start if you aren't into traditional FPS's.

I'm right with you on Bohemia's games.  I was blown away when i first played the original Operation Flashpoint.      I started off on the hardest difficulty (which removes the hud and markers)   So i could get the true "feel" of it.

It was so refreshing after trying one after the other mindless COD type games that would bore the crap out of me.   It took me back to the PS1/2 days when i used to love playing the first Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six, which were great tactical shooters, before UBI butchered the series and casualized it.

I doubt i'll be able to play Arma3, as my pc can't even run Arma2:(

I agree about Bioshock being good, but as far as military FPS go...

I didn't even realize some people consider Bioshock 1 & 2 to be FPS. I thought they were considered Action RPGs.

In any case apart from the Bioshock series, the only FPS game I have tried was COD World at War, which I found interesting in terms of the detail of the art direction in the levels set in Russia, but the game was essentially too short and it became repetitive after a while. I think I finished the game in about 10 hours or so.

I'm used to expansive RPGs where a single playthrough lasts hundreds of hours. Huge fan of bioshock 1 and 2, which were relatively short games with a very cool setting that you can complete over the course of a weekend or two, but the concept was unique enough that it was interesting to play through twice. I didn't have any interest in re-playing COD World at War.

Oh, FPS games. There are so many options!

I strongly recommend trying STALKER. Well, I strongly recommend everyone tries STALKER, but that's because I think it does things with atmosphere that have yet to be replicated or even approached. That's an FPS, certainly, but put it next to a more mainstream FPS and the differences are superficial at best.

Crysis did an excellent job of allowing for emergent gameplay. You could run through the forests like the Predator, taking out enemy positions, stealthing and then running to a completely different position to do it all over again. You could move at super speed and take out groups of enemies before they could even react, or you could hit them with turtles thrown at near-relativistic speeds :P

And, as has been mentioned, the Arma games are closer to simulation than anything else. They favour slow, tactical play over 'run around, bunnyhop and try to shoot everyone'. It's entirely possible you just don't like FPS games, and that's fine! If everyone were alike it'd be a rather boring world. But there are enough options out there (each with vastly different approaches) where the only similarity is 'they're in the first person and you shoot things' that I don't think you can paint the genre with a single brush.

Oh, and then there was also Mirror's Edge, another favourite. Though I never actually fired a gun in that game. Getting the achievement for that made it far, far more frustrating than it should have been, but hey! At least I was able to parkour my way through everything :P

Oh man Mirror's Edge. Truly a unique game and sad that EA/Dice aren't making another. At the time it was the only bright game when everything was dark. It was a breath of fresh air really.

I see what your getting at a lot of people think of FPS as only first person shooters.

Definitely agree with Stalker everything about that game is so hardcore, the atmosphere, sound design and the AI.

Well, if you are so am I ;)  My very first *favorite* game was a FPS.    I still love them.  I loved them long before RPG that is for sure.  Then it was EQ and EQ2, then it branched off from there into almost every sort of game.  I have done long stints on racing games even. lol  If  I like it, I like it.   =)

There are some great FPS out there too - many more of which I now want to play after spending time on this forum and learning about more of them. *shakes fist jokingly*

I guess the big difference for me is that I like to REPLAY my RPG.  I usually "play and beat" a FPS and "play to experience" a RPG.

I enjoy a good FPS one that has at least a 20+ single player campaign, but most FPS today have a 4 to 5 hour single player campaign just to introduce the player to the UI. Most of FPS's focus on the multi-player experience. Having done the whole Quake thing I am pretty much had my fill of FPS multi-player.

I do like the open world FPS experience like stalker, but I usually get halfway in the game and I crave having a good storyline to get lost in.

Borderlands with 4 player coop can be really fun. It's pure mayhem when fighting each other.

Oh, and I have a standing lunchtime Bad Company 2 game with one of the guys in my office. It's a lot more enjoyable to play with someone else, particularly if they're in the same room - your curses at the ineptitude of your hill-hugging teammates don't just vanish into the ether at that point ;)

Here are some of my favorites...

The STALKER series for its atmosphere and open world.

I played the Battlefield series to death. I have all of them, except 2143. I love everything about its MP: The classes, the choppers (after a lot of practice I can fly through the tube under the Kubra Dam in BF2 - Ghehe), the planes, the tanks, the vehicles, and cursing at the n00b tubers while bunny hopping. :P

I actually consider ArmA to be a full blown milsim instead of a plain TP/FP shooter. :P

Aww I don't find them boring. I think I may even *gasp* like RPGs and shooters... and racing, and shoot 'em ups, and survival horror, and puzzles, and platform games. All at the same time... (omg, I'm an aberration! D:)

I play shooters since the first DOOM. Actually I started playing shooters (DOOM), RPGs (Rage of Mages on PC, although my first RPG ever was Phantasy Star on Master System) and racers (Top Gear, on my SNES and Monster Truck Madness on the PC) almost at the same time.

One shooter I recently finished was Bulletstorm. DAMN! I don't remember laughing so much while playing an FPS game since my Duke Nukem and Redneck Rampage days XD

And BTW: Grayson Hunt, Bulletstorm's main guy, is voiced by Steve Blum. That's right: Imagine a drunken Oghren kicking people in the face while wielding a 4-barrel shotgun :D

Mirror's Edge is one of the finest gaming experiences I've ever had the pleasure to have, and I've been gaming since I was five. I still play it on and off to this day.

I don't really like modern day shooters as they focus too much on just funneling you through corridors, obvious or hidden. I just finished the original Crysis and I enjoyed that immensely because of its openness and the way it makes you first scout out the area, plot the position of enemies and then make your strategy to deal with them. I miss those kinds of shooters.
