Arma 2 one of the best shooters ever though it's mostly for a niche market because unfortunately people don't like to think when playing fps's.

I played Arma 1 and that game had really sh*tty ally A.I. and ridiculously complicated controls.
Not sure about Arma 2 but I heard it is largely the same and it's very buggy.

Most are pretty much the same and even play the same way sadly. And while these games in particular are from the same franchise, just look at Call of Duty from Modern Warfare and onwards, there's no substantial change between Mordern Warfare, World at War, Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops. The same can be said for the TimeSplitters franchise as well.
Thankfully, there's some exceptions, like Metro 2033 and the aforementioned STALKER.

One of the games I loved way back when was Operation Flashpoint. It was one of the first that made me fall in love with ....well, I guess tactical shooters is the best way to describe that one. The graphics were nothing to look at (/understatement), but it WAS a very immersive game. When I was on a mission to plant a bomb, or get into position to snipe, I could feel my heart pounding as I snuck along the way trying to remain unseen. I also remember screaming at my computer screen when my AI squad mates were less than adept with their listening skills. " I said, go to tree @ 2 oclock! Not stand out in the middle of the field! TWO O'CLOCK you $%%#! " *laughs* Plus, once you did have your squadmates, it could get pretty strategic too. Lots of ways to accomplish your mission, and no right way. I liked that. You know, when they listened to you. =)

With my experiences playing OFP and Arma2 (never played Arma1),  i wouldn't call the AI bad at all, i would say eratic.

Of course with a huge unscripted game like your gonna have some bugs and odd things happen sometimes.

For instance, it might get a little wacky controlling your squadmates sometimes, say.

But when your getting flanked by the enemy or popped by some little pixle far off in the distance you never even saw, you'll say, " Holy ****, that's some amazing AI right there !!

I love battlefield. Love it, love it, love it, love it. But you can't really have long winded discussions (text based ones) about it like you can with ME.

No I was more yelling "HOW THE F*CK THAT AHOLE SHOT ME WITH AK47 FROM HUGE DISTANCE?!".

No seriously, many enemies had 100% accuracy.

ArmA 2 is much more improved. AI dodges, leans around the corner, uses handsignals and is easily customizable with the settings.

However, I suggest ya using some of these simple tweak/improving mods that GREATLY enhance the feeling overall

Linky

And just for **** and giggles, here's another that allows blindfire, leaning from the prone position, covering behind the wall etc. :P

Linky again

There are actually a few good first-person action games. Half-life 2 is nearly flawless. The only way it lets itself down, is that it automatically reloads your weapons if you switch and use another weapon. The Episodes aren't as good, but they're still better than basically everything else out there. There's exactly no filler in Half-life games, and it shows in the lengths. Half-life 2 is between 10 to 15 hours depending on how you play, Episode 1 is around 3 to 4, and Episode 2 is around 4 to 6.

Bioshock and System Shock 2 are worth some attention. Technically they are action RPGs, although I don't think they make really good ones unlike Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas. They're overrated by people unfamiliar with the RPG genre. I have to admit that Bioshock's twist is brilliant though, and the setting is absolutely superb.

How about Co-op play ? Has anyone played System Shock 2 or Half Life 2 (Synergy mod) Co-op ? (online)

And how was that experience, if so ?

I've been looking for some good co-op games to play with my buddy. OFP:CWC gives me framerate problems on my pc, even though it's old and shouldn't.

Someone mentioned Swat 4 to me on another forum.

Yep. The vast majority of FPSs bore me to tears. Perfect Dark is awesome, and the best of a bad bunch. That being said, if one were to classify Metroid Prime as a FPS, which I myself do not, then I think that it would easily be the best that the genre has to offer.

There are good ones out there, I mainly though like and enjoy Third-Person Games. I enjoy The Crysis, Battle and Medal series some others too. :) I wish that FPS type of games previded more and had Offline, Instant Action mode like some Third Person shooters have.

I loved the original Call of Duty. The American levels felt like Band of Brothers, the game. That was awesome. And Perfect Dark was amazing. And I admit, I love all the Halo games.

The only FPS games I tend to like are FPS (with RPG elements) such as Fallout and Deus Ex, System Shock, Skyrim (kind of since more FPP than FPS) etc. I might occassionally play say Kingpin or Halflife, AvP, Resistance, Killzone but those types tend to bore the hell out of me. I went through the phase of online FPS matches and clans, ranks and competitions but even they got boring. Tbh now unless it's a combination of FPS/RPG I'm really not interested.

Resistance titles was ok, I managed to clear single player mode without getting bored first time around however online was pretty bad to say the least. Killzone was incredibly dull (imho) Never got far into single playthrough. CoD was ok in the old days along with Quake and MoH even AvP for online matches but every single Modern Warfare titles, Black Ops, Battlefield titles and others are beyond tedious. MAG I have never tried yet.

I swear there is subliminal messages built into the loading screens on those games which makes people want to keep playing them akin to WoW addicted players. One thing I noticed in all my friends who still play bland FPS online all the time is they have serious anger issues developed, attention spans have dropped and they spend half the day moaning about how bored they are. I swear they is a correlation between IQ and constant FPS usage relating to how much addiction they have towards playing FPS online each night ~and not in a positive manner/way either.

I'd call it more of a first-person puzzle game since you don't actually shoot anything dead with bullets.

I view it as more a Puzzle / Platformer even if it is in the first person camera perspective.

You just have to look hard and you can find a good thing out of any genre, hell most people here have said some good FPSs go play them.

I pretty much gave up on FPS games, though at one time I was an avid player of the genre. On PC, I played the Dooms, Quakes and most importantly, Counterstrike. On console I spent countless hours on Goldeneye, Halo and MP on Halo2 as well. Then when MW came along I thought, WOW!, the MP was just off the charts, perks, ranking system everything. Then after that, everything turned into MW and nothing has changed and I walked away from them. The last FPS game I bought that I really enjoyed was Battlefield Bad Company (I really dislike 2 because it mimicked MW). RPGs are my first love and I always walked away from the FPS games when the great RPG came along.

If there is one FPS series I still may play it is Rainbow Six, though RSV2 really took it down a lot and I was disappointed. I also really enjoyed the Ghost Recon series (I prefer tactical shooters anyway), but that series went downhill with GRAW2.

I enjoy a good FPS one that has at least a 20+ single player campaign, but most FPS today have a 4 to 5 hour single player campaign just to introduce the player to the UI. Most of FPS's focus on the multi-player experience. Having done the whole Quake thing I am pretty much had my fill of FPS multi-player.

I do like the open world FPS experience like stalker, but I usually get halfway in the game and I crave having a good storyline to get lost in.

Concur.

It's first-person and you shoot portals but that's about the extent of it being a 'first-person shooter'. It's really a puzzler.

FPS aren't really my thing, although I try them out now and then. What I really don't like is the FP viewpoint. I just can't get used to it in games no matter how many I try, so I tend to only play them sporadically. Portal was the last one I played, which I really enjoyed a lot, but that viewpoint... man, it just doesn't do it for me.

Yeah, I hate FP viewpoint too, for some reason I just like to see my character.  Games like ME and GOW where you can switch to aim are fine, but full time is not my thing just seeing a gun all the time.

I enjoy Bad Company 2's multiplayer, I didn't really like the campaign.

Vietnam is a good add on but it does seem to be lacking in... Well... everything (not many maps, guns or vehicles), it doesn't feel finished. I can only hope they bring out some new maps for it :/

The only problem with first-person for me is the sense of depth. I end up thinking my weapon is closer or farther away from the enemy than it really is.
