What do you do and why? Did the Soul Survivor background impact your choice?

Is that with Toombs? If so,my canon Shepard (Sole Survivor) shot that scientist and let Toombs go.

My Sole Survivor paragon Shepard told Toombs to kill the scientist even though he had plenty of Charm to talk him down, letting his psychological damage overcome his generally sympathetic attitude.

My other Shepard, a renegade with the Ruthless background, shot the scientist after Toombs revealed that the scientist was working with Cerberus. She thought that if she let the scientist live, then he would get away without punishment because of how secretive and elusive Cerberus is, so she took it upon herself to rid the galaxy of him.

I tried a neutral run-through recently with no persuasion options available. I tried to talk Toombs down but he shot the scientist and then shot himself in the head

 My current character is a female Adept named Sonoura, with an Earthborn/Ruthless background. She is based on an Evil Sorceress character I have in Dragon Knight Saga. So she shot the scientists, and would have shot Toombs too, if provided the op. That's just the kind of girl shee is...

Was Toombs kind of practice for the Lazarus project? If so Shep should be thanking Cerberus not shooting the scientist, of course she wouldn't know that at the time.

The were experimenting on the effects of Thrs Maw Acid on humans. The Laz Proj wasn't associated with this.(AFAIK) She would have killed him/them anyway.
BTW She decided to kill the followers after the Renegade Surrender Opt. Bad Bad Girl indeed
