Just beat my first playthrough (on normal) and I never used my armies.  I saw the wheel of armies up when i started final Denerim but was saving them for when it got really tough.  I never did use them or think of them again.  Were they available for the final fight with the dragon?  I found that fight easy enough but longish without them.   Anyone else forget to use them or just decide not to?  Are there cool cutscenes or anything like that when you do call them in?

Side note, the wheel had 5 slots for armies and I only had 4, what could go in the last slot?  I played a goody goody and had elves, dwarves, Redcliffe knights and mages.  Next playthrough i want Golems and werewolves and any other evilish ones I can get.  How do i get the Templars instead of the mages and is there an evil equivalent of the Redcliffe knights?

Kill all the magi for the Templar, and they'll join you.

There shouldn't be any alternate for the Arl's forces, though. AFAIK, anyhow.

They're not particularly useful unless you can't be bothered having to waste time killing all those low level darkspawn that die in one hit. I was playing without an offensive mage in the team, so I had to send off henchmen to kill them. That was boring so I decided to use the redcliff guys, they lasted until the Archdemon, when trash darkspawn were spawned there as well, I summoned some dwarves to deal with those. I was trying to keep the mages for last, because I thought the Archdemon would have some special attacks/transformation or would summon more powerful darkspawn, but that never happened. This was on hard, going to replay the ending with a different decision path later on Nightmare, but I doubt the situation is very different.

I used the dwarves to secure the gates and the elven archers to nerf the area with 2 spellcasters/dragon thralls and the mages to wail on the archdemon (prob should have picked someone else). I think I could have managed without them, but it certainly made things more chaotic and seemingly action-packed.

You can get the Templars in three ways. Purge the circle (i.e. kill everyone), fail in saving the circle (don't use the scroll) or save the circle but tell Gregoir that he needs to be really careful not to let blood mages slip past him.

As for the armies - no, I didn't use any of them. I was hoping to be able to deploy them all during the final battle, but it turns out you can only deploy one at a time, even in the final battle. I ended up deploying the elves "just because". I lost 1 elf out of 50. No extra cutscenes or anything.

Bah, I say. Bah.

Does anyone know what the 5th army you could get is?

The 5th army is golems. Because elves are a replacement for werewolves and templars are a replacement for mages, while golems are extra besides the dwarves.

I see.  You can get Golems and Dwarves both?

Yup. To get the dwarves you need political stability (so pick a side). To get the golems you need to decide to keep or destroy the golem producing thingy. (Hint: Shale will hate you for keeping it to the point of attacking, Oghram will be mildly unhappy if you do.)

I used the armies the first time around. The mages pretty much only fireballed themselves to death until only three or so were left, the others didn't really make a big difference either... I wonder why I keep running through all of Ferelden to gather these armies, they're not helping. ;-)

Just a note.. the forces allocated to you are not the entire armies. It even says so. There are just the units provided specifically to you to accomplish your mission.

Having said that.. I agree. They were not very useful. They added to the chaos of battle though!

I found the elves to be the most useful army thoughout. A lot more of them spawn at the same time than other armies, they dont rush in and get killed, they tend to focus fire, but each one does little damage so they dont pull agro, and in the fight with the dragon they keep shooting the dragon even when its inaccessible to melee.

Not really. You can have BOTH: Elves AND Werewolfes, when you are really silvertongued  ;)

But IF you want to use any Armys(lets say you play on Nightmare+/Hardcore) the best are the Iron-Golems.
Almost unkillable this 3 guys...:wizard:

How can you get elves and werewolves? From everything I've read you can only have one or the other.

Damn youre right! You can make a peaceful solution for both sides, but the Werewolves will become normal humans and arent worth anymore to fight by your side ^^
I just mixed that, sry =]

Well then the only possiblities for 5 armies are:
Knights, Templars/Mages, Dwarfs, Elves/Werewolves, Irongolems

I like using them because it makes the battles seem more dynamic. I've replayed the fights more than once and have done it without them but it's more fun with all the action on the battlefield so to speak.

You don't really ever 'need' them, but some of the melee adds make the bigger fights go a bit smoother by tieing up some adds.

I did one run through with 3 warriors + Morrigan, and I was kicking myself for not having sided with the elves when I got to the archdemon. Took damn near forever to get him off his pedestal with only Morrigan's attacks.

I would have suggested using the ballistas against the arch demon, but with no rogue they can be rendered useless pretty early on. With a rogue in the party though ballistas do a great job of bringing the arch demon down size in no time.

'to get the dwarves'? you HAVE to get the dwarves don't you?
Just to clarify, you have to KEEP anvil to get the golems... I got 4 golems in the final battles and they were really good.
Shale didn't attack me when I did that, but I didn't have Shale WITH me of course. Back at camp Shale was a bit annoyed but nothing major.
For me Oghren was ok with me keeping the anvil and more annoyed at me destroying it (presumably cos we had to kill Branka)

is it even possible to go to the landsmeet without using all the treaties? Arl Eamon says he needs time to prepare for the landsmeet and that you should gather allies. When you used all the treaties he is conveniently enough ready.

Aren't the Legion of the dead also a reinforcement option?

They are but all they do is supplement the dwarf army, they aren't their own army tab.

Not really. You can convince them to help out once you've gotten the Dwarven Army. If you do, then whenever you use the Dwarf army, you have a chance to get a Legion of the Dead warrior, which is basically just a stronger version of a standard Dwarf - in other words, excellent Melee, but zero Range.
