Can anyone shed some light as to why Loghain abandoned the battle at Ostagar. I don't really see what he had to gain by quitting the field. I just finished "The Stolen Throne" (which is quite good BTW) and I was impressed by how much I enjoyed learning his own back story. Though ruthless, he was loyal to both his few friends and his country men and had no problem placing his life on the line for them time after time. Or am I just thinking to much about this and he did it just to get more power or was just annoyed with Calin and his enfatuation with the Wardens as well as requesting aid from the Orlesians?

If you want to invest some time, this old thread is quite thorough and David Gaider weighed in on this topic.

Interesting info on Loghain. Too bad you don't get all of the info on Loghain's motivations without recruiting him or reading the books. Otherwise it's all to easy to see Loghain as being some power hungry madman with a paranoia of all things having to do with Orlais.
It also doesn't help that when you finally get to recruit Loghain, the game is almost over with, so you don't have much time to get to know him and get all of the party banter.

I wrote a blog to attempt to explain the battle, and I based a lot on the info found in the thread Addai posted.
