What then is the prevailing opinion regardng this sink hole ?
Is it a neat little piece of entertainment on behalf of the writers in which your character can end up wasting much time, effort and ultimately coin (Pickaxes, ahem) for absolutely no return. Ie just like in life, sometimes people make bad investments. The writer deliberately setting up Hawke to come out as a loser in that venture
Or, was the Bone Pit meant to be something greater, playing a larger role, or a more unique 'profitable' role in the game. However due to time constraints, that aspect of the game was dropped, left out, in favour of getting the game out early.

Aspects of DA2 left on the editing room floor because of time constraints?
Surely, sir, you jest?!
In all seriousness, I feel like both the Bone Pit as well as The Enigma of Kirkwall documents felt like they were much larger gameplay mechanics when they were originally conceived, but were sacrificed to the gods of corporate politics. I would be UBER happy to see both or either concepts further explored or fleshed out in future DLC, though.

Well, Hawke would never have gotten the full Champion armor without the Bone Pit.

The Bone Pit (aside from being vital in armor acquisition, as Xilizhra has pointed out) is just lovely gaming atmosphere. Another setting for side quests, sure, but a location to further flesh out the segment of Thedas exposed in DA2. Like every dank cave you run across, or side alley you stumble into, it's part of the immersion factor.
Of course, it may very well be that the Bone Pit holds deeper secrets- something drew a High Dragon there after all, and there were some ruins in the pit center. But I think for DA2's purposes - atmosphere. And a great bit of banter from Isabela.

The Bone Pit was one of the best parts of the game. It was relevant because -it's within the Dragon Age time frame. Not much else but to open a place for the little buggers and a Mother High Dragon. But it was a nice place to check out, a whole new set of scenery, which was nice to absorb. I mentioned in a previous post...why didn't Mother Dragon visit Kirkwall and have some Qunari meat? (Or in the outlying areas.) The Dragons weren't even a threat but to mines? That was stupid.
Still, one of the nice places in the game.

Is there any investment or simulatoring at all to do with this dump?
