I believe it's safe to say that metacritic scores are a reflection of how excellent a game is.

The average score can be misleading. If a group of 10 individuals give a score of 0 and another group of 10 give the game a 10. Then the average is a 5. How useful is that.
If you went just by the number. It would fall in the not so good realm.
You would have to read the reviews. Say group 1 gave the game a 0 because they could not load it and group 2 gave it a 10 because they were able to play the game and liked it.
An extreme example I know, but possible.
By reading the reviews the reader is able to decide why the score is a 5. Th reader can also see the problems that group one had. The reader can read the reviews of group 2 and get the quality of the game.
The reader can then check to see if a patch has rectified group 1 problems and purchase based on group 2's information.

We can dismiss Metacritic as much as we want but even if they are lying, i doubt they could be lying that much openly. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle and the thing is that even if we start from there, DA2 still seem not to be a success on the economic point of view.
Its not that they are lying, i just think their system is flawed and its probably not good to take their word as the end all be all voice on what games to play and not to play. Which i guess some people probably do. I've played some good games that got bad scores before. And I don't think the economic point of view should have anything to do with it personally. Its pretty meaningless to me.

But taking into account that Metacritic is a rather good guide to a game's quality, the obvious conclusion (IMO yes, but again, rather obvious) is that BW simply released a sub-par product.
And that, as a sequel to their best-selling game yet.
Seriously, one wouldn't even need to elaborate on this. Someone that doesn't consider the general consensus on DA2 is that of a mediocre game is completely deluded.

The economic point of view has no bearing on how good or bad any entertainment happens to be. A lot of good entertainment has tanked economically. Chicago Code was a good show according to the critics, but an economic flop. Which got canned by FOX.
It's a wonderful Life is now considered a classic (and nominated for 5 Academy Awards), but in 1946 was a box office disappointment not reaching its breakeven point of $6.3 million (cost 3.15 million to produce).

Critics don't use scientific methods to critique any game, they only appear to be scientific because most people use the same measurements (the 0-10 thing). So i disagree with thee OP. Sorry buddy. Reviews are of a bunch of other peoples opinions/ reactions/ writings about the experiences they had within a game. They are not reflections of excellence, merely indicators of it, if that's what you've decided i guess. Some reviewers don't use scoring systems at all, they just write their reviews and that's all they are. I personally think this is the best approach, simply because it treats each game individually, without comparing them based on, what i think, are arbitrary numbers.
I think meta critic is pretty useless in that way. Its just the average of a bunch of arbitrary numbers assigned to a certain game. The critique is not in the numbers to me, its in the words.
According to that one pre-posted link, the Pro scores may not even be an average; just a final total of numbers crunched arbitrarily.

Haha, this is still going on. Look, any way you look Witcher 2 is masterpiece. And since its done by what is almost indie outfit, who is still at that stage that they are passionate I'm willing to disregard flaws. DA2 is simply mediocre , ok game. But dont worry haters. CDPR will eventually take the same road as EAioware. It's just the way of life in this age. Soon they will be older, will get used to good stuff in life , will discover other interests in life, bean counters will beset them.....People will whine how they sold out, another hungry developer will pop up and life will move on.

Who cares. It's a great game reguardless. Destrucitoid's review gave Modern Warfare a 9.5 so I don't care for they're opinion. In the end Witcher 2 was a sequel that surpassed my expectations and Dragon Age 2 was a sequel that didn't.

Or maybe one man's jewel is another man's trash?
Look, nothing is universally loved. It's the way of the world.
Some people have written whole books on how Shakespeare was nothing more than a fraud who plagiarized other authors. (His Romeo and Juliet wasn't the original....) Differences of opinion, how DARE they exist?

I wouldn't look at metacritic scores too much. Recently user scores evolved into a binary system where 99% of votes are either 10 or 0. As much as it pains me that the scores don't reflect MY opinion, I still won't change it. And I'm avoiding going into arguments as I've learned they serve no purpouse. Doesn't really matter if I convince someone to change their opinion or not, people will continue to believe what they want to believe.
One look at Witcher 2's user rating on metacritic will tell you the 10/0 conspiracy theory isn't accurate. A bunch of 10s and 0s over 1182 ratings will not average 9.
Face it, the game is killer and gamers are responding. Likewise, DA2 is widely regarded a dud.

To para-phrase Alistair, "Yes; I was out to bash the game by delivering a message".
No bashing or praising; just posting a link to something besides Metacritic.

It's really a shame at how the entire industry, from company CEOs to end gamers put such stock into a numerical value that doesn't really articulate a person's thoughts on a game, yet completely ignore the points they raise in favor or against it.
