Just wondering, i usually go opposite to my main...if she is ranged i pick melee, if she is melee i pick a ranged companion...does this make a real difference?
I only difference i can see between, say Varric and Isabela, is that Varric has better AOE and Izzy is better single target dps...so would i be gimping myself taking Izzy with a DW rogue Hawke?
Rogue companions...best at range or melee?

The point of bringing a second rogue would to supply that which you lack. As pc DW, that would be utility, Sabatoge, Scoundrel, pinning shot, and kickback working to keep enemies off you.

I found in my playthrough that my choice of Izabella vs. Varric was dependent on the situation I was going in on. If I was heading on a mage adversary heavy issue I chose Izabella since she could protect my mage well enough, dispatch enemy mages quickly, and occasionally do her area of effect backstab move. Variric came in when I wanted a little more resilient protection for my mages (various knockbacks in his tallents) and could slow the approach of enemy heavies using his rain of arrows and pinning shot. Also that archers lance thingy, which stopped working very well in later levels, was effective against large groups trying to swarm through doorways and such.

I had a lot of fun with Isabela, DW Hawke and Aveline with fully upgraded battle synegy. Though I left Izzy behind for the High Dragon.
Remember that Hawke can always equip a bow if the situation calls for an archer.

well i really just want to know if having 2 rogues both doing melee dps is a bad thing...i tend to pick companions based on their banter rather than their abilities...so i just wanted to check i wasnt making things harder for myself
This situation only comes up if im using a melee hawke and want izzy in the team...i could make her an archer (which i did for my warrior run), but it didnt quite feel right...i just dont want limit my AOE capability for the sake of a group 'feeling right'

I don't find archer's AoE abilities particularly significant anyway. .

If you give Anders or Merril elemental then Varric or Seb can take advantage of the brittles quite nicely with Archer's Lance or Bursting Arrow to dish out a lot of damage. Just watch the ff, especially with Archer's Lance.

i found that if i wasnt constantly micro managing isabella she would die pretty quick or wouldnt attack anyone at all....
even though i spent like 2 hours playing around with tactics on 3 seperate occasions.
although being a melee rogue is ten times funner
having a ranged rogue on your team is more practical

and i understand that pausing for the talent/spell wheel is a big part of the game and that it is meant to micro manage.
but they made the combat to be hack and slash
u can't have both bioware!

Actually it does work both ways, there are plenty of videos of no pause playstyle and pausing micromanaging playstyle throughout these forums.

If its a dialogue thing, regarding the chit chat, why handcuff yourself with one or the other. There is plenty of time in the game to take both companions and get the most out of the dialogue for both of them. Why limit yourself?
