Been playing the game a bit but haven't really analyzed what goes on in the game amongst the chaos and button smashing as a newb.
When you have control of a character, does he (she) stops what he's doing and so does not follow the set-up tactics anymore? If you then switch characters, the previous character would go on auto and follow the tactics you have set-up? I'm trying to get the dynamics of this game, especially with mutiple characters being controlled.
Thanks.

taking control of a character puts them entirely under your control. If you do nothing, that character will do nothing. A character not directly controlled will follow the set behavior if no tactics are set or if all abilities set in tactics are on cooldown.

The character you have controlled does nothing except what you expressly command him to do.
The non-selected characters will move/attack according to their Behavior and use abilities/etc according to their tactics.
If they are on hold position command (H to toggle on pc) they will not move, but still use their tactics (though they can get confused if they are out of range for some tactic etc., they'll just stand there doing nothing).
If you have more characters selected, the main one (the highlighted box arround the portrait is a bit thicker) will act as controlled and the rest as not controlled, but they will all follow a command you give to move or to attack.
Basically tactics are a kind of a rudimentary custom AI for your companions. It's sort of a mix between required full control of whole party and AI controlled companions. Tactics can make a huge difference in difficulty and enjoyment of the game, so it's good to get to know them a bit. Check out SuicideBaby's "lessons".

If you are button smashing I'd go to options and set up Auto-Attack. It frees you up to pay a lot more attention to what is going on.
Tactics work very well for most of your mob level encounters so you can focus on your character. In boss type fights you'll likely need a more fine grained control.
