I've just got ME1 (I know I know, a little slow on the draw) through Steam. I played the game for about two hours and quit. When I opened up the game again, it didn't show any option to load a saved game.  I've also found that any settings I've changed are reset.

I tried opening the game through the launcher, bypassing the Steam interface, and it gives me this message every time:

"This is the first time running Mass Effect. Mass Effect Configuration Utility will scan your hardware and try and select appropriate game settings based on that information.... " yada yada yada

Is there a reason the game seems to be resetting itself every time?  I'm running Windows 7 Professional, in 64bit. I realize this is probably an age-old problem considering the game is several years old. Still, I couldn't easily find an answer by searching, because the keywords are all kind of broad not very helpful.

I have heard/read that sometimes Steam when running will inhibit the game from creating a ME profile thus you don't have saves and lose settings. I can't remember right off the fix but I think it was on this board, maybe even in ME1 TSupport, so looking around some may be all you need to do.
