which will undoubtedly bolster Bioware's confidence that they can get away with games like that and still be winners.

I have just played one of the big contenders for RPG of the year, The Witcher 2 and I have to say it's complete garbage. The developers didn't even bother to improve the game, it seems. Combat is as bad as ever. The dialogues are ridiculous as is the whole gameplay. It's another fiasco of a game disguising itself as an "RPG" while being nothing of the sort.

The saddest thing  about current RPG market is as bad as DA2 was, it still remains one of the better RPG games on the market today. I feel Bioware is unfairly exploiting the lack of RPG competition these days and riding their name to big profits.

Who is left to challenge them except ME3, which is their own game?

ME3 probably isn't even going to come out in the same year, anyway.

Because there are only two companies making RPGs and everything that hasn't been released yet can't possibly win. I'm loving your logic.

Anyway Skyrim will probably do what Elder Scrolls games do best, sell a **** load of copies and get hundreds of awards. Science has proven this fact. Birds fly, fish swim, the scout hurts people, and Elder Scrolls games win awards.

Your negative opinion of The Witcher 2 is hardly universal, so while I am not interested in arguing what is and what is not a quality RPG I will say that The Witcher 2 seems like a strong competitor. Now if your opinion is that it would still only be the best of the worst, well...

Bioware is responsible for their own games, no more, no less. There may be a lack of quality RPGs (and that's arguable), but I don't consider Bioware's actions (delivering an RPG that is not up to their standards) exploitation. Lamentable, maybe, but not exploitation. That suggests an intent that I just don't think was there...

No it wont. Skyrim will, regardless of how good that game actually is because
A) It's common knowledge now that DA2 had very mixed reviews and
B) All those stupid award shows probably wont play The Witcher 2.
At most it will be nominated, and even that would be a stretch if Deus Ex and Dungeon Siege do well, but it doesn't have a chance in hell of actually winning anything.

1. Bioware devs aren't stupid, they know what the problems are with DA2, even if it wins an award.
2. I wouldn't write off the Witcher just because you don't like it.
3. Did you forget Elder Scrolls: Skyrim?

Er, hate to burst your bubble there but The Witcher 2 has had universal acclaim up to this point so unless you're personally responsible for deciding the hundreds of Game of the Year awards handed out I don't see how your opinion that game is garbage accurately reflects the notion that it has zero shot at winning.

As for DA2 winning, very unlikely. The Witcher 2 already has seen more critical acclaim and we've got to see what Skyrim does as well on release. So you can rest at ease there, instead perhaps focus on worrying about The Witcher 2 winning and setting the example for excellence if you feel that game is truly garbage.

If there isn't much available, even a less-than-ideal game has a chance of winning.
(case in point: "Gabriel Knight 3" was nominated for "Adventure Game of the Year" in 2000, due to the utter paucity in adventure games released that year)

I liked DA2 but it won't get RPG of the year. No RPG will be able to complete with Skyrim, not the Witcher 2, or Dark Souls or DA2. Skyrim will be an open world masterpiece that sets the bar for RPG's for years.

I wouldn't say that, sure it knocks all competition out of the water now that ME3 has been delayed but it won't be a masterpiece that rocks the foundation of gaming. It'll definitely be good but it won't be Jesus in disc form, it'll be as popular as Jesus in disc form though. Witcher 2 could be the aformentioned Jesus in disc form but it's a PC exclusive title that a majority of gamers don't care about, Bethesda is practically a household name.

Despite some high praise in early reviews, a lot of reading from those sites post review seem to have changed their mind about DA2, or at least, have greater acknowledgement of its flaws. Thats usually a fair sign that it won't get GOTY.

Besides, this year has some huge names about to break out in the RPG genre, so time will tell I guess.

As an aside, I don't think its BioWare slacking off - so to speak - as much as it is them misinterpreting what direction the consumer wanted RPGs to go. I blame that little box "collect game data" in DAO.

You honestly think TW2 is worse than DA2, and that TW2 won't be nominated while DA2 will??

TW2 is absolute garbage. The combat system, the magic and alchemy haven't been improved at all. In fact, it's more frustrating, annoying and anti intuitive. Dragon Age 2 has somehow managed to be better despite having a billion flaws.

I really do think DAII is fantastic. But I don't think it's GOTY quality. I agree that even if it were the sole contender, it wouldn't deserve it.

The Witcher won't win GOTY either.

Skyrim will. And I'll effing vote for it if I can.

Yes, in your holy opinion.  Which is fine.  You are absolutely entitled to believe that TW2 is garbage if you like.

I personally, if I had to rate the two games at the moment, would probably give DA2 a 5/10 and TW2 a 9.5/10.

But, neither of our personal opinions are of any consequence whatsoever when it comes to RPG of the year.

TW2 has been universally received as a dramatically superior game to DA2 - many reviewers directly point out how terrible DA2 is by comparison.

That anybody could actually believe that DA2 would win RPG of the year over TW2, from a critical reviewer point of view (assuming that one of them would win in the first place...) is incredibly laughable - thus the making of my day Posted Image

This. Skyrim has potential to be one of the greatest games ever created. It will at the very least set the bar for years to come.

I was under the impression there were enough Bioware nut-huggers on this forum. You've found a home.

Q: Is that actually based on anything?  Or is it just sort of assuming that it will be Morrowind 2 rather than Oblivion 0.5?

Actually, I've been one of the most negative and most pessimistic posters towards DA2 on this board. By no means am I a " Bioware nut hugger". I am just seeing things for what they are: a depleted RPG market with clueless developers with Bioware still managing to stay ahead despite producing crap (by their standards).

I base my opinion of Skyrim on three things: BGS's history, what I've seen of the game so far, and the fact that they've promised a launch day SDK. That's really all I need to know.

I seriously doubt DA2 can possibly win with even the Witcher 2 out. It's much more widely regarded as a great game, whereas DA2 is decidedly not. That's ignoring the other stuff that will come out this year.

Well, that's assuming the award shows aren't a farce...I really don't pay attention to them.

Sorry but Witcher 2 is far more likley to be RPG of the year then DA2 regardless of you own dislike for it. As it stands now my guess is RPG of the year with either be Witcher 2 or Skyrim when released.

I seriously question that.

Bethseda got *really* lucky with Oblivion.  When they released,  there were no other RPGs on the 360 or the PS3,  and only one (That was a port of an old game) on the PC in a year.  It released into a content starved genre.  It's not hard to sell alot of copies when there's no competition.

Since then,  Bethseda alienated Morrowind fans and publicly mocked them,  alienated Star Trek fans,  alienated and abused Fallout fans,  they've burned alot of bridges.  Now they're removing more RPG features because Todd still doesn't understand what an RPG is.

I expect it'll be quite similiar to DA2's release,  launching into a market with alot of competition and a ton of ill will,  I expect it to be an amazing disaster.

Mainly because Bethseda still sucks at stories,  sucks at content,  and keeps removing things without adding anything.  I mean seriously,  the creedo of a Bethseda fan is "Wait till the modders get it!",  which is very telling of the average quality of a Bethseda game.

Bethseda's sin is Pride,  and I strongly suspect it's about to bite them.

Personally,  I suspect RPG of the year will go to Double Bear's "Dead State".  Black Isle veteran's making a Zombie Apocalypse RPG is a pretty strong contender.
