Now I can't wait for Skyrim either. Will WItcher 2 or Skyrim get RPG of the year? Until I play Skyrim, I won't make a guess. But I am crossing off the days on my calendar.

:happy::happy: The RPG genre is pretty much dead. Your list only proves my point. You've got Pokemon on there as an RPG. It's a card/collection game. You've got Darkspore on there as an RPG. HMM is an RTS/RPG at best. Your list proves my point.
The days of DAO/NWN/BG games are over. The Excel/Novel setup, where it still exists at all, is being drowned in a sea of options. The post I replied to suggested as much, and I agree. RPGs have to change. DA2 is a good move forward. Is it perfect, heck no. My favorite flaws to harp on are the recycled areas and the lack of a central companion management screen.
The fact is, RPGs aren't like DAO/BG/NWN anymore. The genre is just about dead and needs to change. Out of everything released under the RPG label this year, DA2 is right up at the top if not the top.

^ This. If you want an indication of what games that are the precurssors of what will eventually replace the 'traditional' RPG, look at games like Mass Effect and Read Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto and Assassins Creed and the granddaddy of them all, Zelda: Ocarina of Time. They don't seem to have a lot in common, but play them and the common threads become very clear. These are RPG's woven into adventure games. Eventually, RPG's will be replaced by absolutely MASSIVE adventure games. Massive not only in scale, but narrative complexity and gameplay mechanics. Hardware is what's been holding this inevitable transition back.

DA2? It's the first BioWare game that I've ever regretted buying and I've played almost everything (skipped Sonic) since Baldur's Gate 1 (heck, make that MDK) and enjoyed it all (especially KoTOR and ME1). I'm just glad I got in on the early pricing and didn't pay the full $60 for it as it definitely wasn't worth that much. I got far more value out of the Awakening expansion and that cost half that. Hopefully Bioware takes heed and doesn't proceed with blinders on. They will lose a big fan if that is the case.

So far for me The Witcher 2 is leaps and bounds ahead of DA2 in terms of quality. So that currently has got to be RPG of the year. However! Unless Bethesda screws the pooch royally with Skyrim, i just can't see that not getting RPG of the year.

True. How long has it been since GTA IV was released? How long was ME1 in development? I the dev time will definitly get a lot longer. Instead of 3 titles per console cycle, there will likely be two or maybe even just the one. Rockstar seems to have embraced and even improved on this lengthy dev cycle by making a single release then offering expansions for that release (The Lost and the Damned and Ballad for Gay Tony for GTA IV, Undead Nightmare for Red Dead Redemption). A big and complex enough game of considerable quality can last a long time. JUST SAYIN.

I seriously question that.
Bethseda got *really* lucky with Oblivion. When they released, there were no other RPGs on the 360 or the PS3, and only one (That was a port of an old game) on the PC in a year. It released into a content starved genre. It's not hard to sell alot of copies when there's no competition.
Since then, Bethseda alienated Morrowind fans and publicly mocked them, alienated Star Trek fans, alienated and abused Fallout fans, they've burned alot of bridges. Now they're removing more RPG features because Todd still doesn't understand what an RPG is.
I expect it'll be quite similiar to DA2's release, launching into a market with alot of competition and a ton of ill will, I expect it to be an amazing disaster.
Mainly because Bethseda still sucks at stories, sucks at content, and keeps removing things without adding anything. I mean seriously, the creedo of a Bethseda fan is "Wait till the modders get it!", which is very telling of the average quality of a Bethseda game.
Bethseda's sin is Pride, and I strongly suspect it's about to bite them.
Personally, I suspect RPG of the year will go to Double Bear's "Dead State". Black Isle veteran's making a Zombie Apocalypse RPG is a pretty strong contender.
Have you read anything about Skyrim? Have you not listened to Todd Howard...what the features are going to be...what the game looks like? People who criticize this game tend to blindly criticize Bethesda. They also pretend as if Morrowind, which was excellent, is the end all/be all of the Elder Scrolls.

Sure, right off the top people are going to criticize a classless system. I like it. I don't want to be restricted to a class, especially in an Elder Scrolls game. If I want to be a Mage, an Assassin, a Hunter or a Warrior I fan be those things by specifically choosing level perks for those classes. One of the 280 available perks. Then, if I wanted to be a mage, I can wield one of my 85 spells not including dragon shouts or duel wield them if i want....and see the amazing spell effects on the environment. I'm excited by the freedom I'm going to have.
IMPROVEMENTS....dynamic weather system independent of environment (snow falls on objects as it would in reality, based upon physics), 85 different NPC voice actors, third-person camera view as good or better as any third person perspective in existence, diverse dungeons...around 120 of them littered throughout Skyrim, 50% of them lasting 20-25 minutes and 50% lasting from 1-2 hours (9 dungeon designers this time instead of one...we are promised those 8 additional designers will make all of them unique and fresh), user interface overhaul with complex skill trees in stellar constellations, 3D, zoomable and rotatable pieces of loot...every single piece...some have writings on them hinting at side quests and hidden ancient artifacts of power, all-the-way draw distances (see it, go there...no loading textures...look down at a beautiful flower, look up at a distant mountain...walk to the top of that mountain), complex AI behavior...you won't necessarily be attacked on sight. Duel wielding weapons or spells or mix, give and take fighting, can't run backwards fast, finishing moves specific to weapon or customized weapon enchantment (specific to the specific augmentation...naming weapon or apparel customized enchanted item returns, 10 races remain the same except each is much more distinctive and detailed and unique.(I love the Khajiit's new fur and look!)

Story is still up in the air, I agree. Main quest a big mystery, and Bethesda isn't known for their stories. Let's see what they do.

Mechanics and gameplay are important, don't get me wrong, but in order for a game to really crush it's opposition it has to "feel" unique and exciting. DA2 winning RPG of the year is certainly possible, but I don't see it beating Deus Ex or Skyrim just because of the time both Eidos and Bethesda are spending crafting the thematic elements and setting. DA2 just didn't do that, relying too much on DAO to establish that stuff.
With that said, I think the idea of the RPG Genre being dead is a matter of interpretation. It was pretty clear to me, at least, that the point Rinpoche was making had to do with most of the games on that list not being traditional RPG's (and I think that statement is accurate, again using Pokemon as an example). As such, the Genre has expanded to include a wide variety of games with varying degrees of role-playing elements.
That is not to say that because you can prestige in COD that it's an RPG... but it's also not to say that ME2=COD because they both feature shooter gameplay. One is clearly an RPG... and the other clearly isn't.
I fail to see why it is so difficult for people on a game forum to even try to see anyone else's point of view. Disagreement is fine, but for god's sake being right is a pointless venture which is completely subjective anyway.
TL:DR = Deux Ex and Skyrim look like they will have that certain je ne sais quoi, whereas DA:2... while still a great, solid game, just kind of felt phoned-in.
Besides, even the best RPG of 2011 will pale in comparison to the epicness of all epic-ocity that will be Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

Dragons. Yes, oh yes....dragons. They are fierce, they are independent AI and they are free roaming. And they are very hard. If one spots you, it'll nose dive at you. And you can either fight, taking it's soul and learning a new power after locating a corresponding hidden rune in the created for the game Draconic language, or if you are ill equipped inventory wise, say, you left some good weapons at one of your houses, you better run. Not safe in towns...if one spots you in town it'll come after you. Talking to a character about a side mission....boom....dragon sees you, fight. In cities. Just don't let it ruin the wood mill, that effects the economy, making wood arrows scarce or even depleted in that region for a time. Even more dire if its the steel mill. Everyone has jobs....if you want to work, go work at a steel mill, wood mill, go cook or farm a field....wonder what sort of things one can get. Or grab a soul gem and head to the millwright and forge an enchanted steel shortsword or elven mace or dwarven longsword. Or whatever kind you want.
Story is still up in the air, I agree. Main quest a big mystery, and Bethesda isn't known for their stories. Let's see what they do.

Clearly you are a fan... and that's great. I also appreciate how Bethesda approaches the RPG genre, but just as devil's advocate here, a lot of people don't like TES simply because of the scope of the game. Some people don't like games as big as actual countries because they don't literally want their brain eaten trying to "complete" something like Daggerfall.
That's why I think the argument of "IT'S AN RPG!!!! IT'S NOT AN RPG!!!" is pointless. Skyrim and DA2 is really apples and oranges, yet both are RPG's clearly. ME2/Deus Ex, same thing. Heck I think Quest for Glory is the best RPG series ever made, seconded by Suikoden series... and some people don't even consider either of them to be RPG's because of some specific qualifiers.
The reason Skyrim should be strongly considered isn't just for the features you mention, it's for the refinement and improvement over Oblivion, and for the quality of the product (yes I am aware that it isn't out yet, and they might tank Q&A and it will be buggy as hell). However, if it's done well, I don't think you could not strongly consider it as not just the RPG... but game of the year simply due to scope and attention to detail. No one does stuff like Bethesda (for good or bad).

I know you guys are going to have trouble with this, since it's a Bioware forum, but when RPG of the year comes, it's going to be TW2 vs TESV. DA2 is going to be miles behind both of them.
Another sad part is that Witcher w will probably beat DA2 in voice acting (well...Batman: Arkham City will probably win if it's as good as the first one), which is usually Bioware's best category.
