A bit off-topic - I don't usually watch gameplay videos for a few different reasons, but I have to say that was really entertaining. I guess he doesn't believe in drinking potions or using bombs, and inexplicably gave up on quen. And yet people complain about how the intro to DA2 is too easy...it was made for him!

Not a fan of the witcher.

Not a fan of DA2.

Skyrim? I can never get into(story related) let alone finish Bethesda games.

ME3? Probably more of the same.(ME2/blah)

Conclusion: I'm screwed.

Yeah it's nice playing a game where the enemies don't mindlessly jump onto your sword for you and you have to actually use your brain when you go up against multiple enemies. Need more game like that and perhaps we can avoid having folks such as that wonderful fella in the Youtube video.

BioWare is EA though.

That being said, prognosticating the failure or success of an MMO before launch seems... stupid.  Considering how important a strong launch is to the future of the game.

It's not stupid at all. Look at every single MMO that has launched in the west since WoW back in 2005. All are on life support now, struggling to retain 100k subscriptions past the first 6 months. Many have gone free-to-play, and supported by microtransactions. Bioware's model with TOR is extremely questionable--a "massively multiplayer" game with a single-player story mode supported by NPC companions? MMOs are as much a social network as they are a game; undermining the social mechanics is adding more risk to an already inherently risky (and expensive) project.

So unless your contention is that every post-WoW MMO will fail, you're basing your prediction solely on your not seeing the appeal of TOR's design decisions, then?

With TOR for me it depends on how good pvp / battlegrounds / arenas are going to be. That's my thing.

Not just me. MMOs fail when they lack social cohesion, be that as a result of show-stopping bugs or nothing to do as a group. Solo quest-grinding (sorry--Bioware's "Story" pillar--whatever) is not going to retain subscriptions. Even if they toss in a whole party of NPCs. The solo/leveling experience is almost universally seen in western MMOs as a means to an end, not an end unto itself. I don't know who they're making this game for, but I'll assume it's following similar strategies laid out by DA2 and ME2. In the grand tradition of trying to make RPGs for people who hate RPGs, they're going to make an MMORPG for people who hate MMORPGs. And unsurprisingly, it will fail.

Whoa, you're right. That guy flat out sucks at the game and he's blaming it for his own lack of skill.

Thank God he's got a ton of dislikes. I just wish we could leave comments on the videos, hahaha.

I'd rip him apart for his shifting the blame on the game.

I suppose we'll see, most MMOs I played had a majority of quests you could effectively solo, with group quests scattered throughout - plus the occasional dungeon - if TOR simply adds a story basis to that framework I don't see how it's radically different than anything else along those lines I've played.

Given some leaked footage, it seems like typical MMO fare really - almost to the point that it's disappointing. Just the quest NPCs talk. And your pet gets a proper name.

Who hasn't wanted to be able to play a game like KOTOR or Mass Effect with friends, like TOR is offering? I mean, other than people without friends or people who hate Bioware games. I know most of you are too young to remember, but a lot of people thought WoW wasn't a true MMO when it first came out because it was so solo friendly compared to everything else at the time. It brought in people who didn't usually play MMOs though, which expanded the genre. I expect TOR to have a similar effect.

The game even has multiplayer dialog, as well standard post-WoW MMO fare such as battlegrounds, dungeons, etc. It's not like having WoW quests with VA and a dialog wheel makes it a substantially more solo experience than WoW, and considering the NPCs take up a party slot, and are half the strength of a player, it's not like they discourage partying. They're simply what allows you to solo, unlike WoW where everything outside of a dungeon/raid is basically designed for solo only.

I haven't played MMOs, as you know, but my concern for TOR is that it essentially offers content that takes away from grinding, which is what I thought players wanted. But now I recall that you mentioned that players skipped the 'talking' parts because they really sucked in previous MMOs. So it might be that TOR would be brilliant.

That's possible I suppose, but I don't really have an opinion on that.


It's a worry. Bioware makes games I like. If Bioware stops making games I like, that would make me a sad panda.

I don't know if players only skip the talking parts because they suck... talking with NPCs feels kind of awkward in general if you have multiple humans in the game. At least, that's how it seems for me.

Yeah, I don't recall running into anyone who actually enjoyed the grinding.  Though I'm certain there are those that do, probably more in Eastern MMOs.  In my experience it's just something you have to get through to increase in level to reach whatever interests you:  Raids, or endgame PVP, or both.  And endgames are typically weak with new MMOs anyway, but they need to grow them and fast before their players who have reached the endgame lose interest and move on.

It probably depends on a few things.  Especially for example if you're playing on an open-PVP server and can be attacked during a conversation.

Also me. I've never wanted to play games with people. When I wanted to hang with my friends, I wanted to do actual social stuff (e.g. go out to parties, etc.).

RIFT has nearly 2 million active subscriptions and is growing(3 months old). Although it is just copy and paste of WoW with a new name. It has a some-what single player feel. With almost all the "epic story quests" being solo-able or done on your own. It has taken WoW's model with individual rewards=>social rewards. WoW hardly rewards being social as much as the "failed" competitors do.

Although I don't think TOR will be a huge success.

As for DA:2 getting RPG of the year.. I doubt it.. IMO it is worse than the TW2, and Skyrim will need to be an even more epic failure than DA:2 to place lower.

The funy part when I watch that youtube is, I beat that part of the game on first try and didn't feel any difficult at all.
The Witcher 2 is easy if you know how to play and will impossible to win if you are cluess.
THAT is how ANY games should be.
