Obviously. That happens every year. There's usually one title that tends to win more than all the others, though. Not that it means that's actually a deserving winner...hell, look at ME2. <_<Imryll wrote...
My prediction: with so many outlets naming their game of the year, every significant contender will be able to point to one that liked them best--and declare that that's the one that counts. ;-)
Sadly, DA2 will get RPG of the year...

Yup. Unfortunately the name seems to carry more weight then the actual game. Not knocking Skyrim but Oblivion was bad compared to Vanilla Morrowind.

The Witcher would have had a chance if they released it on consoles, but they didn't so it won't get anything but at best, PC rpg of the year.

They are planning on a console release, so it may yet work out well.

CDPR have always wanted to release on the consoles. They tried with Witcher 1, but didn't have enough money to fund it.

Eh? They're not rebuilding the game from scratch, they're porting a game which was deisgned and planned to be ported all along. It'll be out before the year is over, holiday's sometime most likely.

2) TW2
3) Dungeon Siege 3
4) Diablo 3
Obviously, Dungeon Siege and Diablo being in the exact same RPG category means those two games are going to compete against each-other for "dungeon crawler hack n' slash of the year" but NOTE they are being marketed for what they are... hack n' slashes. Dragon Age was marketed as a "Holy Grail of Gaming" and it ended up really being a "Steaming Pile of Excrement". But getting back to the topic at hand... even with Diablo and Dungeon Siege coming out in the same year I would vote either one of those over DA2, although I believe that Diablo3 will be better than DS3 BUT I have faith both games will be great.
So, what is my opinion? Skyrim and TW2 will battle for the "best" while Diablo and DS3 battle for third best.

How do you know that the name carries more weight than the game? Are you privvy to knowledge and game time that the rest of us are not? Obviously, you make it out to seem like you know what you are talking about from first hand experience but then *gasp* the fact that no one has even played the beta besides the Beth QA testers would prove that you are just gassed up and full of "it".
Anyway, the correlation you seem to try to make between your "review" of a game that isn't even released-to-press is of past games.... Oblivion sucked (in your opinion) compared to Morrowind SO Skyrim sucks compared to... RPGs this year.
Wow, that logic....

I think Diablo 3 will come in 2012. Only
the demo is scheduled for 2011. Which is a Godsend for Obsidian, quite
frankly. Far enough from Diablo 3's launch to prevent being butchered,
but close enough that Diablo 3 fans will want their fix of hack n slash
Action RPG.
Plus console launch too.
Awesome insight Mr. Crusty!
Thanks! You always deliver. And I agree, I think DS3 will be bolstered by anticipation of Diablo 3... I know I'm psyched BUT I also know what to expect.

Sorry Talon.
For me personally Morrowind vanilla >>> Oblivion vanilla. With Shivering Isles and mods, I happily dumped 200+ hours into it, but on release, I couldn't help but be disappointed with it.
I also believe that Skyrim will win a number of RPG of the Year accolades unless it is a complete flop. The Elder Scrolls name does have a lot of weight in the gaming community and I think, like Oblivion, even if it doesn't live up to it's promises, it will still be big enough, deep enough and unique enough to take home the gold for many sites and people.
Oblivion (imo) was a bad game by Bethesda or pure RPG standards, but was still quite enjoyable and was utterly breathtaking for the gaming community at large.
At worst, Skyrim will be the same, meaning it will win RPG of the year awards regardless. At best, welll... at best, Skyrim could be the RPG of the year every year until the next Elder Scrolls or Fallout game comes out.

I think the situation is that I take issue with claiming that the name holds more weight than the game AT THIS POINT. Once the game is at the "released-to-press" stage and we get more insight THEN I think we can start making wild assumptions on the quality of THE GAME. I mean... come on, we still know to little about the game besides hype and mid-development stage gameplay elements.

I don't think Ringo is saying anything about Skyrim or the game itself. Just that Oblivion won plenty of awards when perhaps it was not so good on it's own, because of the brand.
Now, when we know more about the game, we can make judgements about the game itself, but based on past experiences, the Elder Scrolls brand probably could win Skyrim a lot of success whether Skyrim is a pile of crap, or Game of the Decade.

Yeah, that's the point. And it works both ways.
Apart from promises, we all know what they are worth, we know next to nothing. It can be the greatest piece of work ever or it can be the greatest turd ever. What I have an issue with, are the wild assumptions of it being mind blowing without having any inside information whatsoever.
We will see and hopefully it will be great. I also was dissapointed by Oblivion. It was the last game I preordered, since I loved Morrowind and expected Oblivion to be even better.

@XxTaLoNxX No need to get so defensive man. I did say I wasn't knocking Skyrim and that I'm looking forward to it. But the name does matter how else can you expect games like Call of Duty to constantly win awards? It's nothing groundbreaking or new or innovative it's the same game with a different coat of paint.
And however you look at it Oblivion won a lot of awards it did not deserve. Vanilla Oblivion and Vanilla Morrowind are two completely different games not only in terms of player mechanics but also in content.

Either way, Skyrim will most likely get RPG of the year I suppose, given it's Bethesda and all. TW2 is too eccentric and doesn't really have the mainstream appeal Skyrim will.

Ok just please don't start this "What is an RPG" debate.

Considering the unconquerable limitations of CRPG's, I'm always amused by hairsplitting definitions of "real" RPG's. Either none of the them is a true RPG (a defensible position, if you consider flexibility in storytelling and decision-making as an essential element), or damned near every one of them is.
Generally, however, the working definition of "true RPG" is pretty close to "what I'm used to" or "what I like".
