Skyrim will have to try real hard on story since Oblivion sucked at it HARD. Good thing modders were able to salvage the rest of the game though. Still, Nords and Skyrim thats something I always wanted to see in the TES game and I cant wait to play it ;)

Wait, main story of Oblivion is pretty good.

I disagree, personally. I think it has the worst main story in terms of narrative quality and quest design of any Elder Scrolls game.

Morrowind taking the title for narrative quality and Daggerfall taking the title for quest design (mofos got like 7 endings).

OK, completely off topic, but thankyou to everyone who mentioned Dead State - I love anything to do with a Zombie apocalypse and I hadn't heard of this game before. A Zombie Apocalypse RPG, I love it, this game is now definately on my watch list!

:)

Another to join the zombie horde.

Actually I never thought Bethesda stories are too terrible. They could be better in some ways in a few of their games, but I think people confuse plot with game style. The sandbox style of course dosen't hold the players' hands the whole way through and shower them with cutscenes. I could care less about such things since I'm less interested in a video game being a digital movie than something I can play and have some creative input in.

Well personally, I didn't like Oblivion's story. It was illogical, paced badly, missed out on some major opportunities - Mankar Camoran Ayleid connection, Martin's Daedric connection, Ocato powerplay, etc - did I mention illogical? If Dagon could've zerged the Imperial City, why didn't he do that from the beginning and not "last ditch"?

I was just left scratching my head after playing it. It was like they left the composition of the main story just before release. While they were still linear, the Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood and Shivering Isles questlines makes the Oblivion one look like a joke.

So you don't even need to compare it outside of it's own game to find it poor in quality imo.

If DA 2 gets RPG of the year, something is seriously up with the gaming industry. Several of the games mentioned in this thread so far would be better choices.

It's possible but there would be quite a backlash if that were the case. An inquistion into the state of gaming would not be a bad thing though.

Sadly? DA:2 is an awesome game, as was Origins before it.

Skyrim needs to be a big improvement on Oblivion to be a good game.

I always got the impression that the main plot in oblivion was just there so you could technicaly complete it. The real substance and the stuff worth playing for was the side quests and guild progression as you imply.

Personally,  I suspect RPG of the year will go to Double Bear's "Dead State".  Black Isle veteran's making a Zombie Apocalypse RPG is a pretty strong contender.

As much as I wish this too, Dead State has no release date, only a "certainly not this year". Unlike Bioware who can count on reputation to scrape through with a half-baked product, Dead State can't come out unfinished because then the studio dies. Some people forget the "When it's good and ready" maxim.

I don't get people hating on Skyrim, when it's obviously shaping to be a much better game than Oblivion ever was in pretty much every area, anyway, DA2 might have had a chance if it was a competition just against The Witcher 2 since the latter is a PC exclusive, but competing against TW2 and Skyrim? I doubt it.

Lol, I'm pretty sure if nothing else, Brian Mitsoda would be welcomed back at Obsidian. So if he wants to take the selfish route he can release it unfinished.

:D

But Dead State is rather like Age of Decadence in that I wanna finally crack open a new traditional turn based cRPG, but I know it's gonna be years till we see them.

I laughed so hard that Hurt Locker beat Avatar. Avatar was not special just pretty.

Sure...Skyrim looks amazing but will it be RPG of the year? that's remain to be seen, and hopefully more info, gameplay video, screenshot etc will came out soon.

I don't think it's good for jumping into conclusions already as the Witcher 2 is PC exclusive(for the moment), and we didn't see more of Skyrim yet...one thing that's certain DA2 won't get RPG of the year If they get...the gaming industry definitely ****ed up.

@OP

Not sure which game you've played, but I'm currently on chapter 2 of Witcher 2 and so far it has been outstanding.

My prediction for RPG of the year is Skyrim. DA2 has received alot of rage, so nobody will vote for that. Witcher 2 might actually turn out to be the best RPG of the year, but I still think the Witcher is a more low profile name, plus its PC only, and both factors will limit votes. Deus Ex Human Revolution will get more rage than DA2, even if its fairly good, the slightest flaw will get magnified by everyone's nostalgia about the BEST GAME OF ALL TIME. Mass Effect 3 has been postponed to 2012.

So that leaves Skyrim. The Elder Scrolls series is high profile, it is multiformat, and the last game - Oblivion - whilst popular, doesn't cast as large a shadow as DA:O or Deus Ex 1. Another factor is that with Skyrim releasing in November, out of all the contenders, it will be the freshest in the minds of people when the voting actually takes place.

Skyrim will dominate most RPG of the years awards.
Dark Soul will win some.
The Witcher 2 will win a few.
and DA:II will win none.

mark my words.

DA2 sure as hell better not win any game of the year awards.

Not that its a bad game, cause its not. But it sure as hell isn't GoTY worthy by any stretch of the imagination.

I raged about The Hurt Locker. Good movie sure, but best? I'd rather Avatar as best of worst. Politricks.

And Dead State release speculation is unfortunately just that, the devs don't know when it'll be ready and since they're not even hinting at anything it may be hard to see it coming out by the end of 2011. As their forums go, so long as they release it before 21 Dec 2012 everything is gravy. =]

My prediction: TW2 will sell twice as many copies as DA2 has before this year has ended.  At a bare minimum.

You think it will outsell DA:O? It's a great game, but it doesn't have the polish DA:O had, and I think that will hurt it. It's also released on a single platform. It's a mixed bag how Witcher 2 would do on consoles - it's not the most polished game, like I said, and it doesn't play like a hack & slash game at all. Then again, DA:O played like garbage (IMO) on the consoles compared to the PC, so who knows.

I think it has way more Polish than DA2.

heheh yes it's more Polish and more polished than DA2 :D

While I neither like The Witcher games or TES games, one of either will make RPG of the Year this time.
DA2 won't make it, and I don't want it to, to be honest.

If DA2 wins RPG of the Year or Game of the Year from anyone, I will never look at that publication/award show/whatever it is seriously ever again.

Again, its not a bad game. But seriously? No. Just NO.
