Keyboard not working

The keys do not seem to work properly when I'm running Mass Effect.  They keyboard works just fine outside the game (I'm typing this message just fine, for example).  I load a saved game and hit the W key to move forward and nothing happens.  None of the other letter keys seem to work either - I can't move in any direction, open the codex or the map, etc.  The escape key and space bar are the only keys I've been able to see work so far.

I went into the settings from inside the game and tried to map the W key again to "move forward", and it looked like I was trying to map the 0 key.  I did it again, still trying to map W, and it looked like I was mapping the 1 key.  I could continue to map W and it would cycle through the numbers from 0-9 each time I mapped it.  And sure enough, if I left it mapped to one of those numbers and I hit W a few times it would ignore the key most times, then one time I'd jerk forward, and nine presses of the same key after that it would jerk forward again.  The same thing happened for any other letter keys I'd try - they all seemed to be acting like the 0-9 keys in sequence.

This machine was just upgraded this weekend from Windows Vista x64 to Windows 7 x32 (using the "Custom" option, meaning it's a fresh OS, not a true upgrade).  This problem didn't happen when I had Vista, but it happens every time I run the game now that I have Win7.

Originally after installing Win7 I was using the version of DirectX that came with the DVD, but after I saw this problem I upgraded it to the latest DirectX, but it didn't seem to work.  I also tried upgrading my keyboard drivers, making sure i had the latest Windows updates and reinstalling Mass Effect and the 1.02 patch.

Details:
PC version, physical DVD
Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ (2 CPUs), ~3.0GHz
Memory: 4GB
DirectX Version: 11
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 8800 GT, driver version 8.17.12.7061
Keyboard: Microsoft Natural Multimedia Keyboard 1.0A, PS/2, driver version 6.1.7601.17514

Very few of nVIDIA's recent drivers work properly for such old model Geforces in these games (particularly ME / ME2, but also generally true for DAO). You'll need the oldest Win7 driver you can find, for starters, and if the Dx11 install messed up Dx9, you may run into trouble and need to reinstall it (Dx9).

I hope you haven't read this prior to my addition of this modification / edit to what I answered.  I've not seen any keyboard symptoms such as those you described, although I would imagine if they ever showed up before, a search using Google would turn it up (ignore the forum's own broken search function).  I don't know at all whether a better driver or any problem with Direct3D is involved.

If you do search, add the site:  redirector to your criteria:

I did try to search the site already (and the internet at large) and haven't found anything that's helped yet.

I went back to the earliest Windows 7 driver for my video card that I could find, no luck. I also reinstalled DirectX v9 and it didn't help. (Apparently Dx11 comes with Windows 7 - I can't uninstall it.)

The two Direct3D varieties are mutually complementary. It's usually best to have Dx11 first, and Dx9 second, rather than the other way, however. I've not seen your symptom mentioned before that I can recall. Is it a wireless unit? If so, can you borrow a wired one from someone to test with?

It's not wireless. It's a PS/2 connection. I think I have a USB keyboard sitting around here I could test with later today.

I believe that technically I had Dx 11 first because it's built into Windows 7. I don't think you can have Windows 7 without having Dx 11.

Nope, I plugged in the USB keyboard, launched the game, and it does the same exact thing.

Edit: Interesting side effect, though... after I plugged in the USB keyboard and started Mass Effect I could no longer hit Escape to quit throught the startup videos.  I had to hit Enter instead.  In the game itself everything worked the same as it's been doing, though (all letter and number keys act like 0-9 keys in sequence).

@Merkuri: Sounds like something has gone wrong with your windows build. Note that no matter what option you selected, unless you formatted yuor hard drive and rebuilt Windows from scratch, you are still running an upgrade, and not a clean windows install. Windows upgrades are reknowned for being unstable and unreliable.

@furry ferret: May I suggest you go and post in the DA2 forums, and recount the exact nature of your fault, rather than just saying "same thing".

I found a solution, I uninstalled comcast constant guard. It has a keylogger program that interupts games. I don't know if you have it on your computer but it sounds like the same problem

Boy, I wish I had read this forum four days ago (I keep expecting it to email me when there are new replies to my threads, and it keeps not doing so) because I just came to the same conclusion as Ferret. Except my conclusion came after I had done a complete reformat and reinstall of Windows, installing programs one by one and testing between each windows update or program install to figure out what broke it. :P

Moral of the story: Damn Comcast again. :P

Its not so much as Comcast, but thirdparty drivers/applications in general. There is a problem with the weapons locker crashing when yuo try to access it, and thats caused by ASUS SmartDoctor and/or ASUS GamerOSD.
Unfortunately theres not much we can do on these forums in regarsd to these programs, unless we have had direct experience with them ourselves. All we can do, is try and remember for the next person who has a similar problem.
