Is it still possible to romance Liara T'Soni, Kaidan Alenko, or Ashley Williams if I choose the renegade path, and kept choosing renegade responces, especially when talking to them on the ship?

No. There are times when the bottom right option will kill any possible romance. However, I do believe it is possible to do romance while using neutral options.

Using the top option (paragon) in the "romance" conversations doesn't always get you paragon points. I've been trying to play full paragon this playthrough and noticed being nice to Kaidan wasn't getting me any paragon points, eventually I had to choose some bottom options (because he thought Shep fancied him) and I didn't get any renegade points for using them.
I think you just have to look what is written, sometimes the bottom option is saying "****** off I hate you" and should be avoided other times it is still pursuing the romance but in a more renegade way.

Is that why my Renegade character ended up alone when trying to romance Ashley? What if I was sweet as pie to her and treated everybody else like crap? Would that preclude a romance with her?

The upper or lower dialogue options to do not always correspond to Paragon or Renegade. Sometimes they are just "yes or now" or just Shepard's attitude toward a given situation. Paragons can get angry, Paragons can decline romances. Renegades can be friendly and Renegades can pursue romances.

The Wiki has a morality guide that shows you which conversation decisions, as well as in-game actions, give you morality points.
You don't have to always pick lower right, or be a total jerk, to be a Renegade Shep.
