Is it worth trying NWN?

I bought and played NWN2 when it first came out and didn't enjoy it. I think it was because it was quite different to NWN in how the party worked, but also because it was so buggy and my PC couldn't run it at any decent graphical level.
Now we've moved on and I hear that the bugs are all ironed out in patches. Added to that, I have a brand new spiffy laptop with plenty of hard drive to try and fill up. I also have no RPGs left to play, having finished most of the good NWN modules and abandoning Dragon Age half-way through.

My question is, do you think it would be worth me installing NWN2 and MotB or should I look for another RPG to get my teeth into?

I've played BG1/2, IWD1/2, Planescape, NWN and stacks of the user-made NWN modules and really enjoyed all of them. Whilst I know that NWN2 is different, I wondered whether I should stick at it long enough for me to get over some of the perceived issues (one of the biggies was the fact that you had no choice but to take NPCs along with you - stupid, but it stuck in my craw that I couldn't turn them down.)

Cheers.

Yep the game is fixed. But you still get the companions in the OC.

And while you're at it, check out the other things that NWN2 can do:

This is a NWN2 forum, so most people here will talk good about that game. If you don't enjoy the official campaigns, you can try some of the community modules.

You have the game anyway, so all you have to lose by installing and trying it out is a bit of time and effort.

Having to take certain NPCs with you is annoying, but a lot of games are like that. It's just one of their downsides.

The game still has bugs I think, but I for one have never run into anything game-breaking, and it's far, far better than it was unpatched.

As mentioned, there are a lot of community-made things for NWN2 just as there were for NWN1. These include solo ones and so forth, so you needn't have a party if you don't want to.

Cool. Thanks.

I'll give it a blast and see how I get on.
My friend said I should really start to notice how good it gets when I'm in the city, but I never got that far when I played it previously.

Gonna go down the route of Aasimar paladin for ease of play and straight-forward moral guidelines to follow.

After that I might try some of the player-created mods. Some of them look awesome!

For me nothing beats the robust feel of the NWN1 game. Thats why I never really liked NWN2.

However, I heard that the original single player campaign in NWN2 is better than the NWN1 one, so it might be a contender there....while NWN1 certainly has more player created SP modules...

I've mostly been known spending my time plowing through NWN1 peristent world servers (multiplayer).

In any case. Welcome back to NWN! It warms my heart whenever another new or old player tries theese games again...as I still didn't find anything better...(amongst the newer and shinier games).

Welcome back!

As others have said, there are always community made modules to play, and persistant worlds, if the official content doesn't strike your fancy (the OC os the weakest of the official content IMO).

yup NWN2 is worth a shot, now it's a party based game with 4 character (just like DAO).

MOTB is really really good. It gives you an idea of what the OC could have been if they had correct time and funding to finish it, the OC is only "good".

I suggest you also give SoZ a try. The OC and MotB are one storyline, but SoZ is a different storyline all together and does not force companions into your party. It has more of the IWD feel to it.

I've played the OC a few times.  It doesn't really grab me until the city.

Whether or not you play the OC, do yourself a favor, don't miss MOTB.  It's killer.

As you're playing MOTB, keep your eye on Steam.  A couple of times recently they had "NWN2 Platinum" for $10!  That's the OC and both expansions.  Cheap way to get SOZ.  SOZ has good features that help with current mods and pws.

Before you start, utilize nwn2db.com  for great/easy character creation.  As you know, planning your character ahead of time allows the game to move quicker.  There are differences between NWN (3.0e) and NWN2 (3.5e), and a few misc  things.

I like using the "-home" switch (for a NWN2 shortcut).  It allows me to create a completely separate directory to install a module into.  After I'm done, I just delete the shorcut and the directory and "poof", the mod is gone.

Good to see someone return!

* Edit regarding "-home" *

If you want NWN2 to use mods kept in a specific directory, on a different hard drive:

1)  Create a copy the NWN2 shortcut and change the target to:

"E:\\Games\\Neverwinter Nights 2\\nwn2main.exe" -home "G:\\NWN2Mods\\DragonSlayer"

(I keep my mods on my G: drive, in a directory called NWN2Mods, with the files for the mod "Dragon Slayer" installed into the "DragonSlayer" subdirectory.  You can use any names for the directories you want)

2)  Start NWN2 with this new shortcut.  NWN2 will create the new directory "G:\\NWN2Mods\\DragonSlayer" and put the files it needs into it.

3)  Shut down the game.

4)  Install the mod (Dragon Slayer in this case) into "G:\\NWN2Mods\\DragonSlayer", and you're done.

-If you have your options/settings figured out, copy the nwn2player.ini file from whatever install you like and move it to the new directory.
-This works well for deleting mods quickly and cleanly
-Stuff can be in the override folder of a mod and it won't mess with other mods installed in their own directories, having their own override folders.
-Can be used for PWs
-If you use Kaldor Silverwand's  "NWN2 OC Makeover SoZ Edition" (which I think is awesome), know it makes changes to your campaign folder at a higher level than the module folders.  Heed Kaldor's written word: "Because of the complexity of the installation it is required that you backup your OC campaign folder before installation. This will allow you to uninstall the Makeover by restoring from the backup. If you do not have a backup then you will have to reinstall the OC, MotB, and SoZ."  Scary sounding, but well worth the simple task of copying the one folder to put back later.
-Works with "NWLauncher.exe" as well as with "nwn2main.exe"

Another example is a shortcut I used for a MOTB run through where I used Kaedrin's PRC , I used the following shortcut target:

"E:\\Games\\Neverwinter Nights 2\\nwn2main.exe" -home "G:\\NWN2Mods\\MOTBKaedrin"

Then, I installed Kaedrin's PRC into:

G:\\NWN2Mods\\MOTBKaedrin

Thanks for the shortcut info, Axe. One minor correction, the OC Makeover is by Kaldor Silverwand not Skywing. Also I'll add that for those who enjoyed the OC Makeover I recommend giving the MotB Makeover a try.

Ooops, sorry Kaldor. I knew it was yours, but I had Skywing on the brain.  You did great work.  Thanks.  I will try the MOTB makeover in a few months.  I just finished MOTB recently.  I think I started it before you had a locked down version of your makeover.

Yeah, that shortcut option is a great way to keep stuff in the override folders from conflicting.  I have about 6 different shortcuts to NWN2 on my desktop.  I just use which ever game/mod/PW I want to play.

Another benefit is NWN2 is installed on my SSD drive.  NWN2 is smoking fast now, but I can't spare the room to fit gigs of mod stuff on the SSD.

Thanks for the link.
I'm currently having a blast playing a pally at the start of the OC.
Once I've played the OC and MotB I want to try some user-created modules, then I fancy playing on a PW.
I used to play on Avlis for NWN, and heard that they were converting to NWN2 but have never heard anything about it since I stopped playing years ago.
Cheers for all the advice folks.
