It's easy to access and upgrade and it's unique to her as a Cerberus project.

Then again, I dunno why Miranda and Kaidan didn't have visible bio-amps...

The ear suits Jack though doesnt it. Plus I guess they wanted to mix it up a bit since every biotic so far has it "covered" by their hair. Since Jack doesn't have any they could get imaginative

but I would have thought by then they would have had a more nicer design or even learnt to repair hearing (considering they can bring people back from the dead now)
possibly she became deaf in one ear after exploding something like the space station she blew up or something

Amps can be in the ear or the base of the skull. At base the skull it easy as it never has to be shown.

I haven't read anything that says it could be in the ear, at all. Plus, one hard hit and her amp is messed up. No more biotic abilities until it's repaired. Sound completely inconvienent.

From the Wiki:
Modern portable computers allow anyone with a few hundred credits of
equipment to enjoy seamless real-time translation of alien languages,
courtesy of handheld PDAs, computers in clothing or jewelry, or
sub-dermal implants.

Ok this is bugging me becuase I swear im not imagining reading that it can be attached to the ear. Even though the wiki doesnt mention it.
Anyway had a search and found out where I read it. Its in the Mass Effect game manual on page 18. (ME1 not ME2)
"Biotics can strengthen their power in specific disciplines by using amps (amplifiers). These specially designed devices often come in the form of small electronic attachments that are worn on a Biotic's ear or the back of their head."
So im not insane it does say it somewhere.
But it that is sort of contradictory to what we know about amps where its stated that its installed as part of surgery in the brain?

Implants are installed via surgery but amps are worn and can be changed out. In ME1 Kaidan has L3 implants and throughout the game you can give him various different amps like the Solaris Amp or Savant.Captain Crash wrote...

True! Just checked, the manual does really say that!
Anyway, amps being implanted in the brain could just be a retcon, or maybe technology evolved while Shepard was KO (just think about the evolution from ME1 ammo system to the ME2 one).

It's probably a hearing aid, Jack has a pretty bad case of CBS (crazy **** syndrome) and probably stood to close to a explosive she detonated herself
Or, she's partially lost hearing in that ear, due to a beating given to her in prison, or at Teltin.

Jack's ear piece doesn't have jewels it has lights that turn on and off.
I'd buy that it's an earing aid though with the wonder glue that is medigel I don't they would need something like that in this future.

The L implants and the amplifiers are NOT the same thing.

"L implants"? Implants are embedded in the CNS, and are not removable, except for extremely risky brain surgery. Amplifiers go in a slot at the base of the neck. Implants and amplifiers are different, yes.
