But, default femshep looks ugly!
So, what's the difference to MaleShep then?

oh god not femshep on marketing materials again... iconic shep was created to sell the game - that's why he's in all the trailers, magazines, cover etc. advertising is designed to appeal to the majority, not the minority. anyone who says that females are put off by the default is being obtuse - anyone slightly interested in the game will read some kind of preview, and they all (at least for ME1) mentioned playing as both sexes and customisation within that framework. why pander to c.20% of your market when you could do something universal that fits 100%? not to mention that that way is a slippery slope to disappointment: first it's femshep, then everyone gets upset that it's still not enough, then it's because it's not their femshep, then it has to be equal consideration in trailer production/advertising and then you lose or confuse more of your audience because they don't know what they're looking at.
if the marketing director wants to do some actual marketing: how about some promotions for those outside the US, i'm sure that more than triples the total number of femshep players all by itself? how about stuff for the website: concept art, renders, screenshots?
FemShep is a playable protagonist in this series and thus as integral to these games as MaleShep is. One trailer with FemShep as well as some more screenshots with her won't harm anyone. Quite the opposite, it might attract even more players, which is the ultimate goal of any game development company.
And i doubt anyone would complain about not seeing his character in a trailer. By the way, why would this only apply to FemShep players? In fact, some of them are so dedicated that they already made their own trailers with FemShep, because BioWare doesn't do that.
Regarding the confusion: ME players know anyway that you can play both genders. And those who didn't play a Mass Effect before just get to know that you can do so. I don't see the problem here. As you say: "anyone slightly interested in the game will read some kind of preview".
