These don't seem like exceptionally apt descriptions.

However, Drell are basically frogs/toads. They make you high when you lick them, touching them gives you a rash, their throats can inflate, they have webbed hands and frog-like eyes, even Thane's voice sounds a bit like a toad croaking.

Do you mean what the designers based them upon? My guess is they drew up humans and added a blue skin tone  and tentacle heads to make them "aliens". Kinda like anime. Just add a few props here and there and BAM! You have something "new"!

I always thought Krogans looked more like turtles than lizards. I just keep expecting one to draw his head in that hump.

The asari are clam people. I saw a thread earlier yesterday about this clam that doesn't need a partner to reproduce but uses other species of clams to mix up its DNA

Krogans were based on Bats, the Salarians were based on the 'grey figured aliens' which are referred to by people who "have been abducted" and such.. You lose.
