Ive just finished the Rock wraith...and i had to do the old 'kite for 20 mins' thing coz both Varric and Anders wouldnt stay away from him...

they are both set to ranged and i kept sending them away....but they just kept running back into melee range

Is there a different tactic or setting i should use for fights like this?

I'm sure there are some tactics masters out there who could provide you with some solid guidance. For that particular fight, I just used Hold and moved everyone around individually. This allowed me to keep the ranged guys, well...ranged, and also to nicely tuck everyone behind the pillars when the all that nasty glowing started.

If you apply the range attack in the tactic setting, they should always apply range attack. But beware, since they are incredibly fool, they can run TOWARD the center of the battle in some case and suffer the gruesome damage. So the best is to keep an eye for your range attacker like them, or simply apply the "hold" button to prevent them from performing silly movements

Yup, that's a fight where micromanagement is necessary on hard or above.

Yeah, use hold position for that fight. It's possible they're running towards it in an effort to get line-of-sight, those pillars work both ways. Or you have some tactic that's doing it then.

set behavior to aggressive. ranged behavior causes strokes.

for ARW use hold

the only issue i have with using the hold is with a companinon tank...they just dont seem to hold aggro and the mob goes after me or my fellow ranged guys

how can i keep the tank on them when in hold? Does setting to aggresive counter the standing around thing?

If you pull them away and they have LOS ( Line of sight) they'll move closer to the boss.

The boss is range/mele so is difficult to move him away from the stupid pillars. Put Rangers away but Infront of the boss.

hold is only for certain encounters like ARW, not general killing. Its targeting is random during shield/ball phase.

Aggressive will force the ranged to stay together for the most part, this will cause them to naturally defend each other as long as you dont have any stupid tactics that force attack targeting. Aggressive will also not lock up the ranged character under hold when an enemy is in short range. Aggressive will also prevent them from moving, except to get line of sight, which will increase dps.

note: the high dragon encounter is unique and has its own issues, to generalize it toward solutions such as this would be a mistake.

Seriously, the implementation of companions running towards your character once a certain distance threshold is reached even though I set everyone on hold, is one big step backwards from DAO. Like they say, if its not broken. This mechanic makes the ARW fight an even bigger PITA. And something needs to be done with the "Ranged" AI behavior, Anders will not even try to move his butt even tho some guy is whacking him in his face.
