from a rp point of view.

Depends on the Hawke, but usually i prefer to let Carver go with me and Anders so he can become a warden, when I'm not a mage i leave Bethany at home and take Merrill and Aveline instead.

I play as a rogue, so Varric (obv) and then Fenris and Anders - that way Beth gets to go to the circle and realise how much better she had it on the run with her family. I tried it with Beth instead of Fenris, so she got recruited by the GW but she was still awful and whiney. And for my current run through I killed her off. The hardest part was leaving Anders behind... I had to actually use health potions! >.< But at least Anders doesn't have to go to the deep roads more than necessary - I can't inflict that on my poor scruffy apostate.

Bethany/Carver and Anders. Need to turn them into Wardens. If I'm not gonna spare Beth I just take her and Fenris.

I always take Anders with me. Having a grey Warden with you can only be beneficial. When i'm not a Warrior, i take Fenris with me. I usually aquire him very late in Act 1, so he needs some use. And he owes me. I leave Aveline behind, long departures from the guard, especially with her promotion, just seem strange to me. With a mage once i took Carver, as he was hell bent on coming. But Bethany always stays on the surface, i never wanted to risk her (Leandra's pleas don't go unheard). Once i took Merrill, as she really hasn't anything better to do and is incredibly useful (and she makes an adorable face when told to destroy the talking rock wraith.) Never took Isabela down there, just isn't her element.

Ugh, that's metagaming not rp.
Your character doesn't know your siblings can become wardens.
I was trying to think of a good rp reason for a pro-mage hawke to leave behind Anders.
Best I can come up with is he really doesn't want to go lol.

My first playthrough, I obeyed my mother and left bethany behind. So then I took anders, varric and merrill since I was a 2H warrior.
Subsequent playthroughs I have brought carver with anders to make him a warden. Once brought bethany, but felt bad since she seems happier in the circle.

First couple of times I just took whoever I wanted at the time, finally I had a run though with Bethany and she croaked (which I didn't like very much).
The last two play throughs I meta gamed and took Anders because I wanted to get Bethany and Carver back. I really hate Anders so this is a tough thing for me to do. I am totally pro mage this game and thus am going with a 3 mages and one rogue party.

Mage playthrough I go with Carver and Anders. Carver because my Hawke does it as a sort of peace offering and because he's really quite a good little fighter. Anders, because she wants someone who knows the deep roads (and to make sure Carver ends up in the Wardens).
Rouge/Warrior playthroughs I tend to go either Fenris/Isabela and again Anders. Bethany stays at home. My Hawkes tend to very protective when it comes to her.

In addition to Varric, I always take Anders (because, being a former Warden, he has experience with the Deep Roads and with darkspawn, so it's a logical decision irrespective of whether he wants to go or not.
Warrior Hawke #1 took Bethany because she wanted to go (she became a warden).
Mage Hawke #1 took Carver for the same reason.
Rogue Hawke left Bethany behind to appease Leandra (Bethany joined the Circle) and took Fenris because he needed a heavy hitter.
Warrior Hawke #2 (my one and only templar run - this guy was a bit of a cloaca) also left Bethany behind to look after Leandra and took Merrill instead.
Mage Hawke #2 left Carver behind (again, to appease Leandra) and took Aveline.
So a lot of it depends on the character and depends on *my* character class.

Varric - He's mandatory, though I would have selected him anyway had that not been the case. He's a partner in the expedition, and therefore has a vested interest in being present.
Carver - He's Hawke's younger brother, and has been at her side ever since the family fled Lothering. He was also eager to accompany her on the expedition, and Hawke respects that he wishes to be involved in anything that could help the family.
Anders - In addition to the fact that he is an accomplished healer, Anders is in possession of the skills and techniques of a Grey Warden, something that is invaluable in the Deep Roads. The taint allows Anders to detect the presence of any darkspawn, giving the party time to prepare for battle.

Bethany/Carver (only took Bethany on my 2nd playthrough, didn't know that they die there because of the taint cuz CBA to read the wiki, Carver's just an **** who deserves to die, even though I almost cried when the "you have to kill me part came") and Merrill + Varric ofc.

Depends on my class, honestly.
My mage Hawke is a bit sweet, almost sugary so, and tries to please mom-Leandra by leaving her little boy behind. Plus, I tend to think it would be her way to benefit Carver, in that he could prove to Leandra he can be more of a head-of-the-household figure, less under Hawke's own shadow. Bums her out when he runs off to be a Templar but she still respects his choice to do so. That means mage Hawke ends up going into the Deep Roads with Fenris, as a warrior-type capable of taking hard hits, and Anders, the Grey Warden healer-type.
My rogue Hawke is snarky, which is just her way of hiding deep emotions behind a facade. In reality, she's convinced she failed her family completely when Carver was killed during the run from Lothering and she's terrified of losing Bethany, too. If she leaves Bethany with Leandra while she goes off to the Deep Roads, something, anything might happen, so she takes her with her, in a desperate bid to keep her close enough she can keep her safe, from Templars or slavers or raiders, etc. Then she takes Fenris along, because she needs a warrior down there and Aveline can't go, the whole guard thing monopolizing her time. When Bethany dies down there, it cements rogue Hawke's feeling she's failed and provides a heightened realism, imo, to her mother's death later on.
Finally, there's my warrior Hawke. She's aggressive, blunt, dominant. She brings Bethany for similar reasons but also because she respects Bethany's desire to go. Anders goes, too, because the group needs heals and it's good to have a grey warden with experience in the Deep Roads down there. There's very little debate when warrior Hawke determines Bethany should go to the wardens. She's blunt that way, few people really argue with her for long, and she will NOT let Bethany die if she can help it. Her blunt nature also provides some reason for Bethany's later snide response to her warden experience, in that Hawke really never allows her a "no" option.
That's me, though.

My unspoiled run, my Mage Hawke took Anders because he was a grey warden, and Mum gave me the excuse I needed to take Aveline rather than annoying brat of a brother.
After that I metagamed.

For strictly roleplaying reasons here are my thoughts.
Reasons not to take:
Bethany - only remaining younger sibling.
Carver - only remaining younger sibling and just to irritate him (rivalry).
Aveline - she's the Guard Capt. of Kirkwall and would be gone for too long.
Fenris - doesn't like mages
Isabela - she's a pirate, not a splunker and she's trying to find her lost relic.
Merrill - she's a wood elf, not a splunker and is obsessed with working on her mirror.
Anders - he specifically states he doesn't want to visit the Deep Roads ever again.
Varric - he has to go
Reasons to take:
Bethany - partner in the expedition.
Carver - partner in the expedition.
Aveline - has spare time before she officially becomes Guard Capt. and she owes the Hawkes.
Fenris - avoid Slave Hunters and he owes Hawke
Isabela - she's a pirate, but she's also an explorer/adventurer and treasure hunter.
Merril - she's a wood elf, but she owes Hawke and might know something about ancient cultures.
Anders - he's a Grey Warden, can detect Darkspawn and has experience fighting them in the Deep Roads.
Varric - he's a partner in the venture and a dwarven treasure hunter (he has to go).
So, from a RP perspective Anders and Hawke's sibling would make sense. If you wanted to irritate Carver or protect your sibling you'd leave them behind. Fenris would be a suitable substitute for your sibling since he specifically agrees to help you with the Deep Roads expedition and he's kind of mercenary-like. Taking Merril or Isabela doesn't make much sense but there could be a reason for it depending on how your Hawke feels about them. Including Aveline in your Deep Roads party makes the least sense because she's so invovled the City Guard and has a lot of work to do becoming the Guard Capt.
But in the end, when it comes to roleplaying, anything is possible/explainable.

I actually think she prefers to go to the Circle. I mean, she's no longer a bother to your family (since you have to run and live in fear because of her and Papa Hawke), she's in a stable, secure place with others like her, and she's no longer defying the common Andrastian idea for mages.
The Wardens are the opposite of that, so it's easy to understand why she'd hate being one of them.

She's pretty awesome at the end as a GW. She has a strength to her and a hardened view of the world that I liked. It is a pretty YMMV situation though.

Depends. If I'm playing a rogue/warrior, it's usually Anders and Fenris. If I'm a mage, it's Anders and Carver because I prefer GW Carver to Templar Carver.
But from a role-playing perspective...
Anders comes simply because he's a Grey Warden and Hawke wanted someone with experience at her back. They are his maps, after all.
Fenris comes because... well, what else would he be doing? I think his Act 2 Codex entry says that he takes on mercenary jobs when he isn't brooding or with Hawke, so the job would be right up his alley. Hawke kept that in mind when she was looking for companions for this trip.
Aveline stays behind because she has a legit job, and it didn't seem realistic for her to take a month off work to go spelunking. If it was a short trip, okay, but I couldn't picture Aveline being willing to shirk her duties for that long, nor would Hawke ask her to. I imagine she was nervous and unhappy about not being able to accompany them, but Hawke probably placated her by asking her to watch out for Leandra. (I'm sure Leandra was absolutely smothered while Hawke was gone.)
Bethany usually stays because she never really wanted to go in the first place. Bethany never seemed gung-ho about adventuring and fighting. Hawke also knew it would be dangerous, and she was fiercely protective of her family. She didn't want to risk her mother losing ALL her children. Now I do have one file where Bethany went because Hawke was paranoid about the templars being on her trail and thought Bethany would be safer if she got out of the city for a while. Bethany can go either way, but my Hawkes generally prefer leaving her behind.
Carver goes because he wants to go, and he's pretty vocal about not being left behind. Plus he's capable and Hawke is used to having him fight at her back. On my one Templar! Carver file, that Hawke tends to be overly protective and kept him home.
I don't really have any RP reasons for leaving Merrill and Isabela behind most of the time. Hmm.

RP reason for taking Avelline? My PC trusts her, of all the people Hawke knows, the one 'solid' person he has is her. And having 1 person who absolutely won't stab Hawke in the back in the DR is a good thing.
First game I left Bethany home because that's what Mom wanted. Second game I heard the "It's the Templars or Darkspawn" line from her and brought her with...sadness. Third game I left Carver behind because I just can't rely on him. Sure, he's kin, but he's not solid. Bethany I know always has my back and will stand firm in anything.

I've played through around 15-16 times. I've had to move saves to make more room on my hard drive lol. Usually regarding who I take is obviously Varric, but I usually bring my sib and Fenris.
The reason behind this is becuase I mostly figure with killing off my sib then having mom go by act 3 she's alone. That impacts how she'll react when the final battle comes round.
Plus when you kill your sib and then have Varric kill Bartrand you have a better reason to tell Fenris not to kill his sib. Or you can be just angry and tell her that she deserves what she gets. But Varric will use Fenris' name when convincing him not to kill Varania. I don't like to send Bethany to the circle becuase of the abuses. And Carver going to the templars is to me at least the biggest betrayal, and he's a bigger jerk when he's a warden. Can you just imagine he's still not known as Carver Hawke Grey Warden, he's always the Champains brother ha! So I kill them off. Mostly becuase when Fenris's alone quest pops up and he says he's alone and I tell him that he has me I get a better feeling that he believes that I understand him more.
I don't like Ander's reaction to Sandal in the deep roads either. I've never brought any of the other party members to the deep roads. Just Ander's, Varric, Sibling, and Fenris.
Oh! And when you don't have a living sibling someone from your party will be kidnapped instead I like to have the surprise. Fenris is usually in my party at all times so I wonder who will be kidnapped this time.

Depends on which class I'm playing.
For mage:
Carver - he needs to die so I can rescue Isabela/Merrill in Act 3
Varric - obvious reasons
Merrill/Isabela - either one works
For rogue/warrior
Varric
Merrill/Anders
Aveline/Fenris - if rogue
Isabela - if warrior
