Best class for sniper in ME1?

I have so far managed to reconcile in my head playing a soldier in ME1 with a shotgun and charging enemy lines with immunity spam and carnage, along with a liberal dose of contrivance to justify eezo exposure during ME2's introduction, and biotics training with his LI (Liara), in order to import him as a vanguard in ME2.
But now I want to redo my ME2 infiltrator in an ME1 playthrough. And, well, whilst infiltrator is definitely a powerful and fun option in ME1, the playstyle really doesn't suit sniping, at least not IMO.
Or does it? Maybe I'm missing something. So I'm asking you all your opinions on what makes a good sniper in ME1 so that I can import it to ME2 and enjoy the widow (maker).

Differences:
- Infiltrators get some heat reduction.
- Soldiers get Adrenaline Rush (meaning they can Assassinate more often) and 9% extra weapon damage.
Might seem like soldiers are better. But then Infiltrators get loads of tech powers that are not only useful but also let you bring any two squadmates and still open locks. In my opinion, both classes are just about equally powerful, but Infiltrators are more fun.

I personally find soldier kind of boring in ME1. You pretty much get to where, what you do is pop immunity and shoot. You use your talents to use assassinate or carnage. I prefer infiltrator, since you can vary your game play and squad more.
ME2 on the other hand, I find both to be fun as snipers. I think it's because the combat is more compelling, so there's not so much need to play around with my playstyle.

I have this weird obsession that requires me to play through ME1 to import to ME2, despite having Gibbed and buying Genesis. You have my permission to call me names; I deserve it.

Don't feel bad. You're not alone. I can't play ME2 without an Import, and I just got Genesis as well. I also just started a new (5th) playthrough. I always gst Sniper Training with any build. In ME1 you can still do a lot of damage with it maxed out, and the right upgrades. I also found the Sol class and the Inft class to be boring. My last was Vangard. When imported to ME2, became the most fun thus far. My current is an Adept, strong biotics up close and has proven to be deadly at long range with Sniper. Filling the mid range with pistol.
I guess I'm saying, ANY build can make a good Sniper in ME1. It just comes down to playstyle. The Sniper in ME2 can be a little diff, in that you don't get the Slow-Mo. But I didn't use it that much anyway, playing as an Inf.

if you like the 1 shot "sniper feel" i only suggest to not to play on the hardest difficulties or dmg mitigation will prevent that... at normal and vet you can even turin your rifle in a minicannon with explosive round and highest dmg mods, not very efficent but pretty fun ^^

My Adept can take out smaller enemies with one shot on insanity. And yes it is fun to use explosive RDs. Aim at the feet and they are launched 100yds in the air. You need to make sure to save a couple of VII Rail Ext.

You're missing something for sure. Infiltrators and Soldiers in ME1 can actually be played in pretty much the same way. Both have Immunity, with Soldiers of course having more durability (but probably more than you'd ever need, considering how insanely overpowered Immunity is). Both should go for Commando for sniping, so they'll both have the Assassinate upgrade and the extra weapon damage.
Differences:
- Infiltrators get some heat reduction.
- Soldiers get Adrenaline Rush (meaning they can Assassinate more often) and 9% extra weapon damage.

Great thing about ME1 infiltrators is that you can develop your own electronics and decryption powers, that way you're not bound to squad mates that have those abilities (Kaiden, Garrus, Tali). It means you can roll with a Wrex/Liara or Ashley/Wrex squad if you want, which I frequently do. I'm especially fond of Ashley and Wrex.

Consider AI Hacking a front line trooper and then ordering your two teammates to advance forward along with him, as he turns around guns blazing, while you cover them with your sniper rifle.
Also, those pesky Krogans who want to ruin your sniping fun and just charge after you? Neural Shock collapses them instantly, giving you a couple of good shots on the enemies behind him.
Because Engineers can only have light armor, you want to be able to dash out of battle at a moment's notice, but still take advantage of the tenuously weakened state of the enemies you just abandoned. Before their shields recharge, get a good shot in while they're still out from cover.
My Engineer Sniper has the pistol out most of the time. It's a better weapon in an ambush. However, the pistol is not upgraded at all, preferring instead to upgrade Sabotage, Overload, and AI Hacking, and the periphery skills that upgrade those. First level Assassination is enough for the first half of the game.

It's not weird. Once you get the weapon achievement (enough kills) with any weapon except the pistol, you can use that weapon as a bonus skill for new characters.
Agreed. Its my favourite build in ME:1. I've tried them all over the years but I always come back to the Sniper Adept. I figure that I already have Pistols for mid range so AR's are a lil redundant and Shotty's don't really need the accuracy boost given the short range so all I miss out on is Carnage, but I can replicate that if i want to by using Explosive Rounds. Because of the Power Wheel Bug I never use a bonus ability so why not choose Sniper Rifles for extreme range?
