If they had to make a Mass effect film. Staying away from the games has to be the best possible way.

It's going to suck either way, CGI characters in live action films ruin everything.

This happens roughly 50 years before the events with Commander Shepard.

Mass Effect 1 - 2183 CE
First Contact War - 2157 CE
Discovery of the Mars Ruins - 2148 CE

2183 - 2157 = 26
2183 - 2148 = 35
26 =/= Roughly 50
35 =/= Roughly 50

I hereby declare this source of information absolutely valid.

I'm not going to say it will be good or trash, until I see the first screen shots and trailer... Then I will decide if I want to see it in theaters or not. If it doesn't please me enough to watch it on the big screen, I'll wait a long time til it comes to HBO/Starz/Showtime, since the rental store market crashed and burned.

They should forget live action and just sign on Blur to make an animated movie instead.

This would be a far better idea,  but,  I'm sure there is some marketing reason why they're not.

I support the animated movie, but I'd like to see an animated movie for the Mass Effect main story about Saren and Sovereign.
If it's oughta be a live action one, I think that being about the First Contact War think it's really good news!
It'd be like a nice combo, watch the movie, then play ME1, then 2 and finish with an esplendid 3!

Sorry but that is FANTASTIC news if that is true. This is what I want to see. A movie featuring Saren, Reapers and inevitably Shepard would shatter my inner "Commander Shepard" and it wouldn't be such a personal story anymore.

Plus I've always been curious about the contact war and the discovery of the Prothean ruins on Mars. Hopefully it's a great movie and engenders more down the road.

"I know the hearts of some people just sank reading this title"
No, exactly the opposite. Now they can't ruin the games' storyline for me.

The only thing I'm worried about is that the turians are protrayed wrongly as some bloodlusty aliens who just wan't to destroy everything.

I got a feeling that will really happen.

Cool, I always thought discovering the charon relay and the first contact war would be the best thing to make the movie about.
I guess Grissom will be the protagonist.

I would hate it if the film had Shepard in it because they'd make her a dude (which would make sense since most people play as a bloke but I wouldn't like it) and probably a paragon.

I see the Mass Effect universe having more potential for a series than a film, though I am just looking for a new Star Trek to watch.

Having the movie set in the First Contact war would be a very good thing as they can do what they need to to make the film compelling while not butchering the story of the game or invalidating your Shepard as the cannon.

That said they will most likely butcher the Turians and make them into the typical hostile alien race.

If the story taking place at the time of First Contact War does that mean no characters from the games will be included in the stories? Since Asari live a long time we could see some characters from the game. What about a young private Anderson or Hackett?

I don't know maybe this is from another set of characters in the same timeline. Do you think it is a good move to not include any characters from the game? Maybe we will get some cameos. Wow, I just have so many questions. This is exciting.

I think it is possible that we will get younger versions of some characters, though as far as I know Humans don't meet Asari until the end of the First Contact War. I know that TIM was involved in the First Contact war before the foundation of Cerberus.

Doctor Chakwas and David Anderson both served in the first contact war. We'll also get to see Ashley's grandfather more than likely.

Oh, come off it, this is an obvious fake. Not only is there a typo in the description, the idea that Avi Arad would invest a hundred million bucks in making a movie about a codex entry is patently ridiculous.

If the First Contact War would make such an awesome movie, why wasn't it the subject of Mass Effect 1?

I am not upset with the news that it won't be about Shep. ME is not like other games, where the story is so thin that you can just write up anything to fit it. ME is an extensive IP that a lot of effort went into.

First Contact war is a great idea as a first movie. It introduces the viewer to the ME universe and opens the door for other ME movies. Of course the rest of the news concerned me, as I feel when a movie is made to "maximize appeal" it ends up pleasing no one.

Not enough substance. Videogames are very different than movies. I would compare a game to a full season of a T V show, not a 2 hour movie.

Anyways, I've been hoping since day 1 that the movie wouldn't be about Shepard, otherwise it wouldn't actually be canon in my own character's universe.

You know what was a really great introduction to the Mass Effect universe? Mass Effect.

You guys are kidding yourselves if you think any movie studio would ever make a movie about the time some humans had a skirmish with some aliens that quickly was resolved diplomatically. Seriously, if you think they will pick that over "one man saves the galaxy from terrifying space Cthulhus with the help of a blue alien space babe" you are insane.

This makes prospects for this movie... better. I'll not say good.

Making it about Shepard would, in many people's minds, be establishing a canon. Hell, even a Shepard cameo would be bad, because you'd have to come down on the side of male or female. That's a lot of PO'd fans.

I'm already prepared for an whole lotta retcons. The First Contact War seems to be a prime target for retcons lately, what with ME: Evolution and all.

Best advice is, expect the worst and be pleasantly surprised.

Exactly, but it is starting to look that way. That's why I say that, if it is a move about the First Contact War, it's gonna be one giant retcon.

"A skirmish that was diplomatically resolved after 3 months, you say? Noooo! We're putting tons of space battles with MASSIVE explosions, aliens eating human brains, and the protagonist is a cross between the Terminator and a brick."

It's not starting to look that way. Beyond the breathtaking idiocy of the whole premise, there is a glaring typo in the "official summary". You guys are being punk'd.
